About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

VeoRide says it’s working on modifications to keep bike service in Aggieland

By Karla Castillo | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) – VeoRide representatives say they’re working on system modifications to keep the bike share program in Aggieland.

Texas A&M Transportation Services announced the contract with VeoRide was ending on December 31 and would likely not be renewed because of things like unsafe bike antics and bikes blocking sidewalk access.

Monday night a VeoRide representative told KBTX they are …

Want to ride your bicycle? After more than one year of work, the bike master plan for Georgetown is here

By Sally Grace Holtgrieve | communityimpact.com

After trying to bike into downtown Georgetown via Leander Road a couple times, Kim Rouston said she decided it was just too dangerous.

The only place to safely ride a bike on the route from Rouston’s home is the sidewalk, which stops and starts along various sides of the road, she said. One must continuously zig-zag across the street and at one point go through a school campus to stay on the sidewalk.

“There’s no way to safely go down this street and into town,” she said.

The city of Georgetown hopes to change that.

Officials are working to install infrastructure ahead of city and county growth to …

Photographs and Memories: A Weekend in the Biking Life in Austin, Texas

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Like many people in the modern era who are privileged enough to have a smart phone, electricity and mobility, I take a lot of pictures. Some good, some not, a few great. Who’s to say, though? If you like them, great. If not, move along. Trouble is, I don’t use that photo platform named after your grandmother, so when I’m riding my bicycle and take a pic, it goes either here, on my Strava fitness app (follow me there if you’re a bikester) or doesn’t see the light of day. Occasionally I post a blog with a lot of photos and some words to explain them. This is one of …

Rudely Interrupted Zwift The Herd’s Tuesday Social Group Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 10, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 10, 2019

All was going as planned until about 10 minutes into the ride the electricity burped and I lost the computer connection to the internet and Zwift. It took about 10 minutes for the internet to come back, router connect and computer get back online to rejoin the ride. The video starts with me waiting for riders to come by. When they do it is out of nowhere.

Outside the weather was not suitable for bike rides: 50 degrees and raining. Earlier I selected The Herd’s Tuesday Social Group Ride to begin at 11:55 AM. As the start neared I gathered all the stuff I needed during the ride, started the OBS program to record the ride, started the ceiling fan, connected all of the sensors to Zwift and waited for the ride to begin. The riding time was 60 minutes but thanks to the electricity outage I only captured data and video of part 2 of the ride. I looked for another ride to join but they came later than my time allowed.

Wednesday the weather forecast looks below my tolerance threshold so Zwifting will be in the house. Hopefully the electricity stays on.

www.bicycleretailer.com

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — Trek is recalling 2,840 of its 2017-2019 model Super Commuter+ 8S e-bikes because a front fender bolt can unthread causing the fender to fall into the front wheel.

Court date for driver who tried to attack me with a screwdriver

btrettel | bicycleaustin.info

Helmet cam video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trSB3mK78bs

Back in September I was preparing to turn left when a driver almost hit me head on. That driver then made their own left turn nearby. Thinking I could get them to pay closer attention in the future, I followed the driver and spoke with them. (I’ve already heard from many people that this was my mistake. Let me say that I think talking to most drivers is worthwhile but you only need one crazy to make it not worthwhile…) The driver escalated fast, pulling out a screwdriver and thrusting at me at one point. I honestly thought he was going to stab me. Because I was straddling my bike, I couldn’t easily go anywhere aside from towards him. After he …

Pink Flamingos Christmas, 81 December Degrees Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on December 9, 2019 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2019

After taking two days off since my last bike ride on Friday I started today’s ride at 11:40 AM using the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I biked 35.42 miles. December now totals 106.8 miles. Year to date I rode 7408.2 miles on the road and 368.8 miles virtual biking for a total of 7,777 miles. This surpasses my total miles for 2018 and with several days left in the month I plan on building on that.

Who would think December 9th the temperature reaches 81 degrees? When I started the ride 79.7 degrees showed n my home weather station and at the 2:25 PM it moved up to 80.8. Weather while I biked: start 80 (72% humidity, 69.9 dew point), overcast, wind SW 13 mph. Finish 81 (68% humidity, 69.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. I probably overdressed with shorts, long sleeve jersey, and short sleeve jersey but sweating is not a problem. A front passes through tonight so Zwift will be my biking on Tuesday.

The tailwind on the ride north to Tavola helped me set a good pace. I dreaded the impending headwind on the ride south back to Kingwood. The headwind slowed me some but I kept my overall average speed about the same. When I rode behind windbreaks I picked up the pace to compensate for the out in the open slower riding. My rested legs pedaled me through without complaining.

Last week I received my FitBit Versa 2 smartwatch. Today I figured out how to use it to record my bike ride effort. The numbers were higher than what the Wahoo Elemnt and other sensors recorded. The big difference was in th distance: FitBit showed 38.8 miles versus 35.42 miles on the Elemnt. The Versa battery takes a hit when I used it to record the ride.
