About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Turns Out, Mandatory Helmet Laws Make Cyclists Less Safe

BY THOMAS DEVITO | www.bicycling.com

If you’re just tuning in, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended last week that all 50 states adopt laws mandating bicycle helmet use for adults.

There’s a huge problem with that: It actually makes streets less safe for cyclists. I work for Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets, two organizations dedicated to keeping cyclists safe. And we …

… Lastly we know these “quality of life” laws are disproportionately enforced in communities of color and in lower income communities. In Austin and Dallas, Texas, for example, mandatory helmet laws were either repealed or changed after disturbing racial disparities became evident based on who was ticketed for not wearing a helmet. In Tampa, Florida, nearly 80 percent of bicycling-related …

The Wheels Keep on Turning: Austinites Divided on Progress of 2014 Bicycle Master Plan

Every Thursday underneath I-35 in downtown Austin, about 150 cyclists convene for a 10-mile ride through the city. The rhythm of cars overhead, trundling down the notoriously congested highway, is almost drowned out by chatter from the cyclists and the music blaring from speakers mounted on their bikes. The ride began in 2009 and highlights the perceived rivalry of the roadway: cars vs bikes. Four wheels vs two. And right now, cars reign supreme. …

Lots of German on Zwift Riders Germany Social Ride (D)

Texbiker.net Posted on November 15, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 15, 2019

I picked today’s ride because of the start time and then realized when I got ready to begin it was 90 minutes and German was the language from the leaders most of the time. (I do not speak or read German) My solution: ride near the back most of the ride. On Fuego Flat I was 176 out of 179 and other times 210 out of 213.

Not a problem because outside the temperature settled in the mid 50’s, below my outdoor biking threshold of 60 degrees. Indoors I wore shorts and a T-shirt with the ceiling fan and floor fan on. By the end of the hour and a half ride the shirt was wet from sweat.

This was the longest distance ride on Zwift and the longest time riding on one ride. The long ride made me decide to not record it and take pictures periodically.

I wasn’t sure how my legs and butt would handle the longer ride time since standing up is not as easy as outdoors. I think I did okay with my legs still pedaling strong and my butt not hurting.

In Zwift rides focus on the watts per Kg and I did not notice where that showed up until today when I saw it in my blue block on the ride side of the screen which shows my position and the riders nearby. Now I know where to look when the leaders call out for a particular w/Kg effort like on a hill. Before I calculate this in my head and come up with a rough number. No need to do that now that I know where it is.

Where I stand on my goals for November:

  • road miles: 205.9 miles towards a 360 mile goal
  • virtual miles (Zwift): 152.2 miles exceeding a 100 mile goal
  • virtual miles YTD: 316.2 miles towards a 400 mile goal
  • miles rode in November 358.13 towards a 460 mile goal (road + virtual)
  • I rode each day in November either outdoors or indoors
  • I rode every day since October 19th through November 15th

Saturday the temperature might reach the lower 60’s. Sunday it may reach the mid to upper 60’s. Depending on when that happens will determine if ride outdoors or indoors.

Video: Bike lane project gets $6M, but not on lower Broadway

Garrett Brnger | www.ksat.com

Avenue B, Alamo Street bike lanes to complement Broadway corridor project

Funding for a bike lane project got a unanimous vote from the San Antonio City Council on Thursday, though it had split sentiment.

The $6 million in Midtown Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone money that the City Council voted to authorize will pay for protected bike lanes on portions of Avenue B and Alamo Street. It’s not a standalone project, though.

“Everybody believes we should have protected bike lanes on Avenue B and Alamo. So that’s …

After the Fall: What to Do When You Come Off Your Bicycle

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Crash, wreck, accident – these words all conjure up unpleasant images. That’s because falling off your bike can really, Really, REALLY hurt. A saying in bicycling goes “It’s not a matter of if you’re going to fall, it’s when.” I’ve had one fairly serious incident, and a few minor mishaps. I’m thinking about this topic because I experienced one of the latter the other night. It was a relatively minor scrape (yes, a pun) with a weird, free-standing curb the other night. Here’s what happened and …

Fenced In on Zwift, The Herd’s Thursday Beginner Group Ride (D)

Texbiker.net Posted on November 14, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 14, 2019

Zwifting indoors today because outside drizzle fell and the 43 to 45 degrees dropped below my tolerance threshold of 60 degrees. I prefer riding in short sleeves rather bundling up.

The Zwift ride started at 12:20 PM but today’s ride took an attentive eye to stay behind the fence/gate at the front. I started off about the middle of the 95 rider group but because the leader kept the pace the fence came close several times and I think I passed 4 or 5 times. I got to the 5 to 8 position a few times. This was one of the easier rides I have done on Zwift but the start time fit my open time. I decided to record the ride to show my work.

The thumbnail shows me in position 11 at the .9 mile point. I fell to the 33rd position and I think as far back as 45th for the first 10 to 15 minutes. Only one big climb today, nothing like Box Hill in yesterday’s ride. Today’s I was in the top 5% of my category; better than yesterday’s 9%. Three personal record today according to Strava.

Friday’s weather forecast repeats today’s with less chance of rain. More Zwifting. I think I will get my subscription worth this month.
