About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hermann Park Conservancy’s Park to Port Bike Ride

CitizensNet Newsletter: PARKS | the CITY of HOUSTON

It’s November, and that means Hermann Park Conservancy’s Park to Port Bike Ride is almost here! This year, it’s happening on Saturday, November 16, which means we’ll be at the height of that #AutumnVibes season. It starts at 7:30 in the morning. So that cool, crisp fall air-it’ll be there in abundance.

The ride itself is about 20 miles, from Hermann Park to the Port of Houston and back. It’s not a race, which means you can take your time admiring our fair city from the bayou trails. And there’s a turnaround party at the halfway point so you’ll have a chance to relax and regroup for the ride back to the Park.

Sunrise views, cool temps, and a bike ride to remember. Tickets are only $35, and you can buy them at hermannpark.org/ride. Group rates (for ten or more) are also available. For a map of the Park to Port route visit https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31394309.

For more information or to buy tickets for the Hermann Park Conservancy’s park to Port Bike Ride visit www.hermannpark.org …

Garcia: Bike-lanes debate exposes bigger fracture at City Hall

Gilbert Garcia | www.expressnews.com

Shirley Gonzales had reached her breaking point.

At the end of a two-hour Transportation and Mobility Committee meeting on Nov. 4, the West Side councilwoman confronted City Manager Erik Walsh and Assistant City Manager Rod Sanchez.

Gonzales, who chairs the committee, was angry because she felt that she’d been stymied by city staff in her attempt to get a full council discussion on whether a 3-mile, $42 million bond project for the lower …

Warrior 100k bike ride helps wounded warriors in healing process

By David A. Bryant | kdhnews.com

CRAWFORD — Former President George W. Bush hosted 40 wounded warriors and their families at his Crawford Ranch on Friday and Saturday for the Warrior 100k bike ride.

The mountain bike ride, put on every two years through the hilly Central Texas terrain, is designed to help the mental well-being of those wounded in the War on Terror. The ride not only challenges the wounded warriors physically, but also helps bring back a sense of camaraderie many miss from their days on active duty in the military. …

Odessa transportation master plan to bring big changes to city roads

Author: Rachel Ripp | www.newswest9.com

ODESSA, Texas — Trucks, cars, trains, and bikes-that’s what you can bet on seeing if you visit the city of Odessa.

That’s why City of Odessa Traffic coordinator Hal Feldman says it’s so important to have a healthy road network.

"With the energy sector activity that’s happening in this region, there is a lot of additional vehicles, large vehicles, small vehicles, lot of additional vehicles on the roadway network. That impacts us. And what we’re doing is we’re looking for a way to keep that …

42 Outdoors, Zwifting Hot Indoors on The Herd’s Bull Run (D)

Texbiker.net Posted on November 13, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 13, 2019

No consideration whatsoever of biking outdoors today. My 60 degree threshold was nowhere in sight as I prepared to start Zwifting at 12:00 PM. Biking outdoors would require too many layers of clothing while indoors I wore shorts and a short sleeve T-shirt today.

Screenshots from today’s ride. I almost decided to record the ride but changed my mind at the last minute.

At the end I held position 230 out of 336. I worked my way up from about 256 out of 276 at the start. Again I fell within the top 9% of my category at the end. Most of the ride I was by myself but I did pass some other bikers. The Box Hill was hard and long. I bogged down to 7 or 8 mph and near the summit I went lower to 5 mph. I managed to pass another biker before the summit though I am not sure how much slower you can go and not fall over. The route was in London. The gate at the front was not a threat to me but the leader did say a number of people went past it.

I found the Reddit.com for Zwift. Also a good Youtube.com channel with Zwift tips and tricks.

Thursday looks cold again and maybe wet. Zwifting on the calendar.

Top 9% Among The Turtles In Zwift Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 12, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 12, 2019

As predicted the cold front arrive last night with a strong wind pushing it along. This morning when I got up my weather station reported 35 degrees and it should get into the upper 20’s tonight. Time to put the plants in the garage.

With the cold weather Zwifting was where I spent an hour riding today. Planning ahead I found the Herd’s Tuesday Social Group Ride (D) starting at 11:55 AM. I got everything in place and got on the Blue Norcross AL bike about 5 minutes before the start. It didn’t take long for me to settle in around 450 position out of 500 at first but swelled to 569 as the ride progressed. I kept my own pace and moved to smaller rear gears as I warmed up. Average speed of 18.5 mph slowly moved me up the positions. These screenshots show some of the ride.

The last screenshot surprised me when I finished in the top 9% in my category. I had no idea there are so many turtles on Zwift.

Wednesday looks cold as well. More Zwifting.
