About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

How an afternoon bike ride with President Bush became a powerful support network of wounded veterans

By Matthew Amidon | www.dallasnews.com

It started with a former president visiting a rehabilitation center for injured service members in San Antonio. President George W. Bush stopped by the Center for the Intrepid at Brooke Army Medical Center in 2009, just a few months after leaving office, and met Sgt. Maj. Chris Self.

Self had been shot in the leg in combat in Baghdad in 2005. He was being fitted for a new cycling prosthesis that day, and when the president learned about Self’s passion for mountain biking, he invited the veteran to his ranch for a ride.

As Bush put it, “He rode me into …

Bank of America manager bikes to work along the bayou

David Ruiz has a new morning routine these days.

He rises a little earlier, usually at 6:30 a.m. and has breakfast. Instead of showering and getting ready at the house, he packs a bag. He’s learned how to neatly fold his suits so they don’t wrinkle on his way to work.

By 7:30 a.m. Ruiz leaves his house in Timbergrove. He’s ditched his car — and instead hops on his gray Cannondale bike.

He rides for about a mile …

The TLDR of the project is:

* complete reconstruction of both Shep/Durham
* reduction from 4 lanes to 3 (11' width lanes)
* 6' sidewalks
* high comfort bikeway (looks like bi-directional on part of Durham and then part of Shepherd)
* New METRO shelters
* improved storm drainage

Searching For The Lost Bike Ride to Farmingham Road

Texbiker.net Posted on November 11, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 11, 2019

After losing my NiteRider Sentinel 250 taillight on yesterday’s bike ride I thought I may be riding the route again today I might find it. Starting at 11:50 AM the weather changed from yesterday: start 72 (84% humidity, 66.5 dew point), overcast, wind S 5 mph. Finish 73 (83% humidity, 67.2 dew point), overcast, wind calm. I changed my attire slightly too exchanging the long sleeve jersey for a thermal long sleeve jersey. I felt more comfortable today. Today’s temperature was about the same but the humidity was higher.

Trying to keep my eyes along the road limits watching other things. The light could have bounced anywhere, someone might have picked it up, or went down a storm drain. I thought of places along the route with bumps and watched there. As I approached the wooden bridge along Kingwood Drive I remembered hearing a noise while riding over it yesterday it is bumpy. I leaned my bike against the railing and walked back across the bridge looking down on the ground and water. Nothing showed up and I think if that was the light falling from the bike it probably went in the water and gone forever.

On the way back home I stopped at Tailwind Bicycles to see if they had a taillight but they are closed on Mondays. When I got home I ordered new NiteRider. While I rode I thought of ways to secure the light to avoid losing another one. Hopefully I think of a good idea.

Later tonight a cold front arrives putting indoors Zwifting on Tuesday and several days after that.

Tall City cyclist bike for those in need

By Alex Valdez | www.cbs7.com

MIDLAND, Tx (KOSA) – As the holidays start approaching, some people living in the Tall City are giving back a little bit more than just sweat, tears and body aches.

LC Public Relations with the help of other local organizations gave Midlanders a chance to ride a bike all for a good cause.

‘Fill the Table’ gave cyclists a chance to get a quick and fun work out on the lawn of the Museum of the Southwest.

According to Leah Williams, one of the …

Cedar Park hires architect to design Brushy Creek North Fork Trail

By Brian Perdue | communityimpact.com

Cedar Park City Council unanimously approved at its Nov. 7 meeting to enter into an agreement with architectural firm MWM DesignGroup Inc. to design the Brushy Creek North Fork Trail—which, when finished, will run 3 miles mostly along the north fork of Brushy Creek.

The agreement states that the design cost must not exceed $519,061.

Once completed, the eight- to 10-foot-wide concrete, shared-use trail will wind southeast from the southeast corner of the intersection of Parmer Lane and Whitestone Boulevard. It will …

Cool Sunny Bike Ride to Huffman But With A Loss

Texbiker.net Posted on November 10, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 10, 2019

After three days of Zwifting it was time to get back on the real road. Getting a later start following church I rode out at 12:32 PM on the “Atascocita – Huffman” route. I skipped biking through Walden for a change. A number of years ago I started going through Walden on this route and never changed because it added a mile to the ride. Today I biked 31.13 miles. The week’s total came in at 186.61 miles including the three days of Zwifting. November stands at 256.5 miles, 204 miles to reach my 460 mile goal.

Weather during the bike ride: start 72 (60% humidity, 57.3 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. Finish 72 (63% humidity, 58.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 13 mph. I opted for a regular long sleeve jersey and a windbreaker jacket. Because I am a temperature wimp a thermal long sleeve jersey would have been better. The wind increase during the ride and the shade chilled me at times. I looked at the weather around Texas in the paper this morning and longed for Brownsville where it was going to be 80+ degrees.

Somewhere along the route my Niterider Sentinel taillight jumped off the bracket. I guess I didn’t push it down securely enough and one of the many bumps threw it off. I may ride the same route tomorrow to look for it but I don’t hold much hope of finding it. Time to buy another one. The brightness and rechargeable battery were good features. I just need to mount it better. I bought a new seat bag to allow room for the bracket and light and I don’t want to ride without it.

I almost forgot the video from the bike ride. Zwifting affects the mind.

Many the coolness upped my effort today causing Strava to report “This was harder than your usual effort.” I didn’t think I was working harder.

Monday weather looks favorable for biking but Tuesday another cold front moves in so back to Zwift probably.
