About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Surveying Hurricane Beryl Destruction On The Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 MTB

Texbiker.net Posted on September 1, 2024 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 1, 2024

Starting September bike rides on a different mount, my Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 MTB. Rolling out at 1:12 PM I headed to the greenbelt trails. What better bike to ride the trails than a MTB. As I rode the trails there was plenty of evidence of the tree damage and destruction from Hurricane Beryl almost 2 months ago. Thankfully the trails were clear except for one spot along Mills Branch Drive where a section of concrete was gone. Not sure what caused that. A number of other people were out on their bikes too. The weather was decent but humid and the 9 mph wind was slowed by the trees when I rode on the trails. It wasn’t a long ride coming in at 12.26 miles but it moved the Trek Marlin to 101 miles since I bought it in May this year. My goal for September is 866 road miles which equals 28.9 miles every day. Today was short of that but better than zero.

Francisco “Panchito” Garcia, age 55, of Muleshoe, Texas, died Thursday, August 29, 2024 in Plainview, Texas. He was born November 17, 1968 in San Juan, Texas to Arturo and Irene (Basquez) Garcia. Panchito rode his bicycle for thousands of miles all over Muleshoe. He never met a stranger and loved to talk, sing and laugh. Cycling Through the Clouds: A Journey to 934.7 August Miles

Texbiker.net Posted on August 31, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 31, 2024

After two rides getting interrupted by moisture I wasn’t optimistic about today’s bike ride. As I walked the Cervelo Caledonia outside water was dripping from the house roof and patio umbrella. The driveway was damp and but walking out there I felt no rain or mist falling. The ride was on. The Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route was the plan. Two goals from the ride: 5 miles to reach my August goal of 904 miles and 35 miles for a 200+ mile week. The first goal looked easy but the second one was iffy as I looked at the overcast sky. Riding through Elm Grove Village, Sherwood Trails Village, and Bear Branch Village I went through some small patches of mist. But the streets became dry and I pedaled on. I wasn’t sure if I would see other cyclists but I saw 2 on FM1960 as I rode east. On Fairlake Lane I saw 2 more and as I made the left turn onto Old Atascocita Road a group of 8 or more approached and passed me. I peeked over the railroad crossing to look for more but that was all for the rest of the ride. The NE wind fought me on the way to the u-turn on Old Atascocita Road at Sheldon Services but when I headed back to FM2100 the tailwind made riding easier. The western horizon clouds were gray but not menacing. In Huffman I turned west on FM1960 enjoying the tailwind all the way to Atascocita Shores Drive. Riding south to make the loop through Walden the clouds didn’t look overly moist. I rode the Atascocita Hike and Bike Trail from Farmingham Road to Kings Park Way and saw the west clouds looking darker. I pedaled faster. I didn’t want to ride in the rain. Back in Kingwood I took a different route to the greenbelt trail under W. Lake Houston Parkway. I finished the ride at 11:16 AM. Both goals accomplished: 934.7 miles for August and 201 miles for the week.

A Strava Local Legend on Kings Crossing North (1:58) during the ride, too.

Growing up in East Texas, my brother and I rode our bikes along endless piney woods roads day after day for years.
