About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

In Front of The Gate on Zwift The Herd’s Saturday Rehabilitation Group Ride (D)

Texbiker.net Posted on November 9, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 9, 2019

It was a little too chilly (51 degrees) for me to ride outside today so I checked Zwift and found the Zwift The Herd’s Saturday Rehabilitation Group Ride (D) starting at 11:10 AM. That gave me 30 minutes to get ready.

I thought I had everything ready but after the ride started I looked down to get a drink and found the item I forgot, my water bottle. Maybe I could ride the 60 minutes without water but it turned out I found a place to run to the kitchen and get the bottle.

The ride is “gated” meaning that if you go faster than the leader and don’t get back behind the gate within a minute you leave the ride. Somehow I missed the gate and got in front of it (I wasn’t the only one). That is when I stopped and went to the kitchen for water hoping the gate would catch and I would not leave the ride. I saw a message that said 120 riders got in front of the gate and removed from the ride. When I got back with the water it appeared the gate did not pass while I was gone and now I was on my own.

It was a rehab ride and I continued on my own passing some riders while others passed me. Screenshots from the ride.

For the week I biked 155.48 miles and for November 225.36 miles. The month’s breakdown: 152.6 miles on the road and 72.7 miles in Zwift virtual miles.

Sunday the weather should warm up and I plan on biking outdoors.

Texas Biking News November 8th 2019

Texbiker.net Posted on November 9, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 9, 2019

Someone has died on Texas roads every day for 19 years. Here’s a look at some reasons why — and ideas for turning the tide.

BY JUAN PABLO GARNHAM | www.texastribune.org

At 1 a.m. Oct. 11, 52-year-old Sylvia Figeroa lost control of her sedan in Lubbock. At 8 a.m. in Midland County, 44-year-old Gerardo Pérez couldn’t stop in time and collided with a semi towing a tractor. Later, at 11:20 a.m., Nedward Davidson, 62, crashed against a Freightliner truck southeast of Valley Mills. And at 2 p.m., Deputy Matt Jones of the Falls County Sheriff’s Office was struck by a car while helping another vehicle that had slid off the highway.

Figeroa, Pérez, Davidson and Jones all died in their wrecks, according to media reports. They are among the more than 67,000 people that have died on Texas roads since Nov. 7, 2000, the state’s last day with no fatal crashes. Since then, an average of …

… Cyclists and pedestrians

Although walking and biking are less common in Texan cities than in many other American metropolises, the number of pedestrians and cyclists here is growing. The number of people killed while walking or biking has increased 40% in Texas.

“It’s a growing problem. It is very dangerous to be in a car in Texas than in other places, but the …

Zwift Team Italy Social SUB2 Ride (D) NYC Central Park

Texbiker.net Posted on November 8, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 8, 2019

I planned ahead today and found a virtual ride with enough time before it started with the things I wanted. It turned out to be a 3 lap ride around Central Park in New York City. I rode around Central Park on a rental bike several years ago but the Zwift ride was very different. The title of this post says social ride but the hill near the end of each lap hit 11% incline where I bogged down to 5 mph each lap. Part of the slowing was to stay behind the orange barrier which marked the front of the ride. When I rode past the barried a message came up telling me to rejoin the group which meant slowing down. A countdown began but I don’t know what would happen if the countdown reach 0 and I was still in front of the orange curtain. I always slowed down and it caught and passed me but then I needed to pick up my speed right away or the group rode away from me.

At times the speed reached 42.5 mph according to Zwift and Strava. The downhills allowed to reach that speed. I started out trying to catch up with the group but on the first small hill I caught the back of the group and moved up to the middle after that. Some parts of the laps the watts fell to around 100 but going uphill I hit 315 watts as my max. I took these screenshots during the ride.

I wonder if Zwift changes the scenery to reflect the time of year. Looking at the screenshots it looks like the trees changed to fall colors. No falling leaves on the road though. In Houston the weather consisted of light rain and 51 degrees which kept me inside Zwifting. That may happen on Saturday depending on how warm it gets. The forecast calls for mid 60’s but if that happens after noon then Zwifting is where I will be. Sunday looks warmer.
