About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwift 3x13min Climb Workout Keeps Me Out of the Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on November 7, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 7, 2019

Fortunately I moved slowly this morning before biking because rain moved in about the time I usually go on the bike ride. This meant virtual riding today on Zwift.

Before choosing an event in Zwift I spent some time checking out Rouvy.com, an alternative to Zwift. I uploaded the GPS files for two rides from my past and Rouvy made them available as routes for me and others to ride. My free subscription time expired which required me to pay so I decided to use Zwift for now.

By delaying my event choice on Zwift I missed a group ride I preferred and selected the Zwift 3x13min Climb Workout mostly because of the starting time. Friday I will check the event schedule earlier. This workout repeated the same wattage buildup three times and everyone stayed together unless you stopped. I managed to hand with group in 55 out of 95 riders for the workout. I took these screenshots during the workout.

As you can see a group surrounded me most of the time. The big black number in the top middle of the screen denotes the watts I was at. The blue/black/blue/black numbers above the watts show my speed, miles, feet climbed, and elapsed time. To the left of the black watts number is the target watts and the time period of the segment. To the right of the watts are heart rate (top) and cadence (bottom).

My legs knew they put out a lot of energy when the workout finished. The Wahoo Kickr Snap smart trainer increased and decreased the effort based on the instructions from Zwift.

Friday will be another Zwifting day based on the weather forecast.

Columbia Avenue in Old East Dallas will shrink from 6 to 4 lanes. Here’s why

lakewood.advocatemag.com

Columbia Avenue in Old East Dallas is shrinking from six lanes to four as City of Dallas officials hope to slow traffic and create a safer environment for pedestrians.

Design plans should be finalized by the end of the year, and construction should start in July 2020, according to project documents from the City of Dallas. The project is expected take 15 months with a completion date set for summer 2021. …

… Plans include improved sidewalks, dedicated bicycle lanes, on-street parking, bus stop improvements and landscaping. The hope is that improvements will lead to more retail and restaurants along the road.

San Antonio council panel deadlocks over Broadway bike lanes

Bruce Selcraig | www.expressnews.com

The shining jewel of San Antonio’s 2017 bond package — at $850 million its largest ever — was the $42 million transformation of Broadway into a livable “complete street” with broad sidewalks, dedicated bicycle and bus lanes and shade trees that might invite European-style outdoor cafes to blossom.

But there is intense disagreement on City Council over how to accomodate safety, cyclists, buses and Broadway’s biggest users, automobiles. The sparring has split even among like-minded pedestrian-supporting progressives such …

Officials talk about helmets to distract you from their culpability in cyclists' deaths. It is just a way of blaming a person instead of a system of transportation where death is a predictable inevitability.

Blue Sky Bike Ride North to SH 242 (and back)

Texbiker.net Posted on November 6, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 6, 2019

Space City Weather in their email weather forecast today kind of went out on the limb when they said today probably would be the last 80 degree high for a while, maybe for the year. A couple of weeks ago they made a similar statement about 90 degrees and then we got a 90 degree day. I hope the same thing happens for 80 degrees because I am not a fan of cold weather, cold meaning below 60 degrees.

Leaving home at 11:17 AM I rode north on my “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. The blue sky replaced the many clouds on yesterday’s ride. This route produced 36.7 miles, moving the week’s total to 104.32 miles and November to 174.2 miles. My goal for November is 460 miles; 360 on the road and 100 in Zwift virtual land.

With all the blue sky this is what the weather numbers looked like during the bike ride: start 78 (64% humidity, 64.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 14 mph. Finish 79 (58% humidity, 63.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 10 mph. I chose to wear shorts, long sleeve jersey topped with a short sleeve jersey. This combo worked out just right for comfort. With the warm weather I stopped at the Mobil station in New Caney at FM 1485 to refill my bottle.

It has been awhile since I stopped and took photos during a ride so at the Woodridge Forest Pool I took these. The blue box on the pole is a free library.

Biking north the wind helped me. At the turn around I wondered if pay back time biking south back to Kingwood would happen. But I improved my overall average speed from 13.7 mph to 14.4 mph biking south. It stayed there until I turned right from Kellington onto the frontage road north of Kingwood Drive where it fell back to 14.3 mph.

Thursday the weather will change. I think I will have time to ride but maybe not. Rain is possible.
