About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

NTSB recommends states require helmet use for all cyclists

by Dean Yobbi | www.bicycleretailer.com

Following the release of a sobering bike fatality report, the federal board discussed countermeasures at a hearing Tuesday. WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — The National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday adopted an amendment recommending all 50 states pass laws requiring bicyclists of all ages to wear helmets.

The recommendation was made after an NTSB panel discussed its study on U.S. bicycle safety. Recent traffic fatality statistics show that 857 bicyclists died in crashes with motor vehicles in 2018, a 6.3% increase over 2017, even though total road fatalities decreased by 2.4 percent in 2018.

The fatalities do not …

463 Miles in 3 Weeks Ending with a 53-Mile Ride: I’m Spent, but Happy

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

After saying in my last post I wasn’t always fond of posting statistics, I’m now going to do just that. Because, miles, baby! Turns out that I’m averaging 154 miles per week. Sunday was terrific weather here in Central Texas, so I took advantage of it and went for over half a century. If you’re just joining us late, I ride a bicycle. With my, um, age and weight “situation,” I’m bushed, even with the “extra” hour from the end of Daylight Savings Time. And yet I’m pretty …

Alton PD installs bike lights for residents

by Jose de Leon III | www.progresstimes.net

Residents near Alton arrived to the city police department with their bikes in tow Thursday.

The residents, many of them family members, arrived to have lights installed on their bicycles-free of charge.

“Should they do any nighttime bike riding, we want to make sure it’s in accordance with Texas law and we want to make sure everyone is safe and visible so we can prevent accidents from occurring,” Alton police Chief Jonathon B. Flores said.

According to Texas Transportation Code § 551.104, A person may not operate a bicycle at nighttime unless the bicycle is equipped with 1)  lamp on the front of the bicycle that emits a white light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet in front of the bicycle;  and on …

Big Bend National Park (Southern Tier)

stealthdachshund | forums.adventurecycling.org

We get to the gate of Big Bend, and the grumpiest staff-person I’ve ever met says ‘Park’s Full" and it’s 60 miles back to Alpine TX, and we’re tired. But then he says "If you go to the National Park Service Office, you might get a back-country pass, but they’re not supposed to give them out anymore"

So hearts in hand, and water bottles rattling in the cages, we …

Voted With My Pedals Biking to Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on November 5, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 5, 2019

With the temperature about 10 degrees warmer than yesterday I started today’s bike ride at 11:09 AM, an hour and 29 minutes earlier than yesterday’s bike ride. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and rode 33.21 miles. Those miles boosted November to 137.51 miles. My goal for November is 360 miles on the road and 100 miles virtual riding.

Weather during the bike ride: start 78 (80% humidity, 71.0 dew point), partly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 79 (75% humidity, 70.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 6 mph. I stepped back on what I wore: shorts, long sleeve jersey (not a thermal one), and a short sleeve jersey. Maybe I over dressed a little but I felt comfortable and didn’t sweat too much. The abundant cloud cover made it feel not so hot.

Again Strava told me that this was harder than your usual effort. I believe this is derived from my heart rate. Some physical data:

  • average heart rate: 123 bps (70%)
  • max heart rate: 153 bps (83%)
  • average power: 94 watts
  • max power: 523 watts
  • power output: 1.3w/kg

Wednesday it might warm up a couple of degrees. Slight chance of rain. I plan on biking.

What is Gravel Biking?

By RidingAgain | austinmountainbiking.com

Been looking at this matter for a few weeks now and found it interesting in the various thoughts different riders have about what gravel riding is.

Here’s how one article begins…

"Gravel riding, aka gravel grinding or adventure riding, is an increasingly popular form of cycling that combines elements of road- and mountain-biking, and consisting mostly of distance riding over unpaved roads. Whether dirt roads or gravel roads, trails must consist of non-technical and unsurfaced roads to qualify as gravel riding. Since cities mostly have paved roads for commuters, gravel riding trails are usually located in …

FREERIDE512 @ Christ Church Cedar Park

FREERIDE512 is coming to Cedar Park! Christ Church of Cedar Park has graciously given us permission to build freeride mountain bike trails on their land. We’ve kept the effort quiet while we ramp-up, but word is getting out.

Waivers are required to ride on the land (available at www.FREERIDE512.com at the top right of the nav-bar on the home page) but unlike our other parks, FR512 membership is NOT required because Christ Church wanted this to be free to riders. That being said, we (FR512) appreciate your membership, as that’s how we fund resources to build trails. But again, …

Defining Traffic Road Safety

By Dr. Inge Ford | bikehouston.org

The price of mobility should not cost lives. In a civil society, most would agree that diverse people do, have, and need various ways to move around. We might also believe that policy-makers and leaders responsible for road safety should incorporate methods that address multiple mobility alternatives, health, education, communities, land use, and equitable connectivity.

But a report by …

Clouds and Wind Biking to Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on November 4, 2019 by Rick AnkrumNovember 4, 2019

When the clouds moved in the weather warmed up a few degrees and the wind picked up too. At 12:38 PM I set out on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and biked 34.41 miles.

Weather during the bike ride to Tavola: start 72 (78% humidity, 64.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph. Finish 72 (81% humidity, 65.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph. Before starting the ride I went back and forth on what to wear finally settling on shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey and windbreaker jacket. I think leg warmers could’ve been added because there was no sun to warm them. I thought I was under dressed but when I finished the ride my jersey was soaked. Maybe that is why I felt cool at times.

I added a new CamelBak Podium Chill water bottle. My old one of several years showed its age and the new bottle matched my bike.

One thing I noticed was how stiff the new bottle is. I really had to squeeze it to force the water out compared to the old bottle. The new bottle has an easier to clean nozzle which is where the black stuff builds up. I do not put anything in my bottles but plain water.

According to Strava, “This was harder than your usual effort.” I was somewhat surprised by this but maybe the extra effort came while riding south into the wind. I improved my overall average speed from 13.8 mph to 14.2 mph.

Tuesday’s forecast: Partly to mostly cloudy. Slight chance of an afternoon shower. High 81F. Winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph. I checked the weather in the valley and longed for the mid 80’s there. No thermal jersey need if this happens.
