About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Biking News October 30th 2019

Texbiker.net Posted on October 30, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 30, 2019

Big coal gave a tiny Texas town free land. There’s a major catch.

BY KIAH COLLIER | www.texastribune.org

Sulphur Springs leaders say they want Luminant — Texas’ largest electricity generator — to leave in place a 120-foot-tall mound of excavated dirt at the site of a shuttered coal mine so they can build an amphitheater. But the soil contains potentially dangerous materials, according to state regulators. …

… A 2017 poll conducted by KSST-AM, a local radio station, showed overwhelming support for outfitting the property with hike and bike trails — and a Target or Whole Foods. …

B-geO Magnolia Miles 2020 Ride

I received this email on 10/30/2019

Dear B-geO Magnolia Miles Ridership Alumni, Sponsors, Volunteers, Friends and Supporters,

We would like to thank each and every one of you for 12 years of exciting and stimulating rides in the greater Magnolia and Waller areas. On March 9 of this year, this awesome event celebrated its 12th anniversary. Over those 12 years, the ride has raised over $208,000 for the three charities that the ride supports:

-The Holy Name Passionist Retreat Center to foster their 12 step addiction recovery programs;
-The Greater Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce to support the various businesses and individuals who partner with the ride in the Magnolia area to make it safe and successful; and
-TOMAGWA Healthcare Ministries which provides inexpensive health and dental care for under-resourced and uninsured individuals and families.

These non-profit organizations have expressed their continued appreciation and support for the ride over its history.

Unfortunately, in recent years, the ride has encountered several challenges in its quest for continuing success:

-declining ridership participation;
-multiple other non-profit fund raisers competing for the same limited sponsorship resources;
-increasing safety and security challenges in one of the most rapidly growing regions in the nation.

In addition to these already burdensome challenges, our B-geO Magnolia Miles’ Ride Director recently received a notice from the Manager of Event Production for the National MS Society with the following statements among others:

“Recently, the National MS Society’s Legal and Risk Management Departments have re-evaluated the recommended rides and determined that to reduce the National MS Society’s risk it is best that each of the recommended rides remain entirely the responsibility of the ride directors and ride organizers.

With the new training ride/recommended ride guidelines, the National MS Society is taking all necessary measures to distinguish our organization from the appearance of collaborating/sponsoring a recommended ride including giving guidance or direction or any act that would lead to the recommended rides being perceived as National MS Society hosted events. These measures include the Society no longer holding the recommended ride director’s meeting.”

The notice goes on to list a number of additional caveats and restrictions that ban any references to the MS Society’s annual MS 150 event.

As a result of this confluence of recent unfortunate events, the B-geO Magnolia Miles Steering Committee has reluctantly decided to end this great event. It breaks our hearts to do this, however we have to adjust to the realities of the environments in which we operate.

Once again we would like to thank each of you for your diligent participation and support of the B-geO Magnolia Miles ride over the past 12 years. We wish you continued success in your charitable endeavors. We know that each of you will move on to new areas of opportunity that support those in need.

58 Degrees Puts Me In Zwift Flanders Classics Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 30, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 30, 2019

Not a hard choice on what bike ride for today. The weather changed as the morning progressed from 70 degrees to 58 at 12:30 PM just before I began the Zwift event. Rain fell often enough to ruin any chance of me braving the elements. It looks like the weather eliminated any more outdoor rides in October with Thursday not getting out of the low 50’s, below my 60 degree cutoff.

This time I chose a Zwift ride that did not say women only in the title. Wanting to try a little harder ride with a starting time not too far away I chose the Zwift Flanders Classics Ride (C) which covered 15.8 miles over 3 laps. A total of 242 riders lined up and most of the ride I slotted in at 176 to 167 out of the 242. I rode 16.69 miles which I still need to learn how Zwift calculates. I stopped not far past the finish line but my Wahoo Kickr Snap spin down lasted about a minute after the finish line. For a change the route map doesn’t show me riding in the ocean.

About 1.5 miles from the end of each lap a hill with an 8% maximum incline slowed me down to 6 to 8 mph as I slowly made my way to the top. At the top it switched to about the same percentage decline where I reached 33 mph or more. Generally the route followed flat terrain.

I took these photos during the ride.

  • 10-30-2019 Zwift Flanders Classics Ride-1
  • 10-30-2019 Zwift Flanders Classics Ride-2
  • 10-30-2019 Zwift Flanders Classics Ride-3
  • 10-30-2019 Zwift Flanders Classics Ride-4
  • 10-30-2019 Zwift Flanders Classics Ride-5

As you can see from these photos I rode alone except for the start. Level C is above my ability in Zwift if I want to stay in the peloton.

by Bill Oliver | wtaw.com

An Instagram photo has gone viral, showing what appears to be someone with the VeoRide bicycle that wound up on top of the dome of Texas A&M’s Academic Building. The image of the person’s face covered by a happy face emoji, and their left hand with an Aggie ring giving the “horns down” sign.

That followed a tweet from Texas A&M that also went viral, showing the bicycle on top of the dome.

An A&M spokeswoman says scaffolding at the base of the dome…which could have been the way the …

Rather Than Rain Zwifting the El Giro de Rigo

Texbiker.net Posted on October 29, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 29, 2019

I waited on the temperature to warm up to 70+ degrees which finally happened around 11 AM. The cloudy sky looked damp so before I went to get dressed for the ride i checked the weather radar.

10-29-2019 Bike Ride Weather Radar

The blue dot to the right of the blue/green mass shows Kingwood. So much for my ride to the north. A change of plans and Zwifting became the route for today.

This is the first Zwift workout that kept up with most of the pack and near the end I led as people dropped out after the route completed.

After getting dressed I opened the Zwift app on my phone and searched for a ride. One not too long to wait and with a D class portion came up and I selected it with about 5 minutes to wait. Opening the Zwift program on my computer the sensors all connected using the app. About 1 minute before the ride started I got on the Blue Norcross AL bike and started. At the time the title of the ride looked okay until I finished the event: Women Only – #7 : V02 Bursts – El Giro de Rigo Workout Series. I missed the women only part. I hope they didn’t mind me riding along.

Zwift Bike Ride Description

I decided to not record the ride and instead took photos of my computer screen during the ride.

The workout lasted 52:32 and I biked 16.22 miles. This put my virtual riding miles for October at 108.4 miles and the total for road and virtual at 734.12 miles. I hoped to ride 25+ miles on the road today to boost my road miles to 650.

Maybe Wednesday’s weather will let me ride outside but the forecast looks doubtful.
