About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Two City Council Members To Ride Bikes Down Lower Broadway on Sunday

Iris Dimmick | therivardreport.com

This Sunday, a flock of cyclists – including at least two San Antonio City Council members – is set to ride south on Broadway along the 3-mile route of a street improvement project slated to begin next year. Organizers hope the ride will bring more attention to San Antonio’s need for more and better bike lanes.

“This is meant to be a civic engagement ride to continue the conversation [about bike lanes] on Broadway and …

Is Living Car-Free Bad for Your Social Life?

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Back in May, I wrote a post about the downsides of a car-free lifestyle. I only touched on the social aspect, and lately I’ve been thinking about it (especially now that I’m back to longer solo bike rides.) So, it depends who you ask. My roommate is sort of car-free, in that he commutes to work, but he shares a car with his wife. For him, it’s not an impediment. Some people in big cities have never known otherwise, so they have nothing to compare it to. So these things are hard to measure objectively. Subjectively, let’s explore.

I last had my own car in January of 2005, when it was smashed into by a guy …

Re…Lig…Ion… What exactly is it?

By RidingAgain | austinmountainbiking.com

I recently posted a couple of comments in response to someone’s comment about "…church…" and riding trails on a Sunday morning. This was on the Brushy Creek thread in the MTB section of this website.

I did this because I have experienced this dilemma myself… Even as far back as when I was racing cross country mtb in the mid-90s. Back in ’97, I was being sponsored by a bike shop and the first of a really big annual mtb race event was being held at Oleta State Park, which was right up the road from it. So of course they wanted me to compete. Not because I could win, as this event was attracting many way stronger riders, even in my Clydesdale class. The owners of the bike shop just …

Video: Woman saved by fiance now has to bury man she planned to marry

By Stefania Okolie | abc13.com

HIGHLANDS, TEXAS (KTRK) — A 27-year-old man was struck and killed by a car just seconds after he pushed his fiancée to safety.

Deven Custer and his fiancée Stephanie Thompson were on their usual bike ride on Barbers Hill Road, when Custer heard a car approaching from behind.

"He reached behind me and pushed me out of the way. He ended up getting it," said Thompson.

"He was my rock, my rock, and …

Gentry Watson, 62, has been identified as the man killed while attempting to cross Loop 288 by bicycle this weekend. Gentry lived on the east side of Loop 288 and was likely heading home when he was killed. (1/3) https://t.co/zxTpSbpgvf

— Bike Denton (@bikedenton) October 22, 2019

Gentry is the 3rd person since 2016 to be killed while attempting to cross Loop 288 by bicycle or on foot on the east side of town. Other deaths were on Kings Row and McKinney St. There is currently nowhere safe to cross 288 by bicycle or on foot on this side of town. (2/3) pic.twitter.com/xFQcs6V54E

The current draft of the Bike Plan update shows a bike lane on Prominence, exactly where Gentry was killed this weekend. This weekend's preventable tragedy emphasizes the need for safe crossings on Loop 288 and other major roadways for people crossing by bicycle or on foot. (3/3) pic.twitter.com/9weHKlFTFe

Uncharacteristic Humidity After 48 Degree Night Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 22, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 22, 2019

When I woke up this morning and checked the weather on my phone the 48 degrees surprised me. I knew the forecast called for cooler temperatures overnight but not quite that low. By the time I started the ride at 11:49 AM it warmed up to 76 degrees but I still wore a long sleeve jersey under the short sleeve jersey. Only after finishing the bike ride did I realize how low the humidity was, 35% falling to 30% at the end. These numbers just don’t happen very often when you are 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico in Houston.

Weather during the bike ride: start 76 (35% humidity, 46.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 7 mph. Finish 77 (30% humidity, 43.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 8 mph. I waited some to allow the temperature to go up some to avoid over dressing. My cool temperature threshold of 60 degrees can cause me to layer up when waiting solves the problem.

Choosing the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route after Zwifting yesterday I biked 32.94 miles rolling over real asphalt and concrete. October now totals 546.22 miles towards the 700 mile goal; 154 miles to go! Year to date stands at 6,792 miles, 8 miles away from my goal for 2019. When I added Zwift to my activities I adjusted my October goal for road biking miles from 700 to 650 and added a 50 mile goal for “virtual riding”. The 546.22 combines my actual riding for those two goals.

Biking to Huffman in the headwind put my legs to a test. The wind wasn’t that strong as far as mph but it felt much stronger out in the open. The fan blowing on me while Zwift is no comparison.

Relive ‘Atascocita to Huffman Post 48 Degrees’

Wednesday weather repeats most of Tuesday’s weather. Big weather change arrives Friday, maybe.

Sheriff: Cyclist pushes fiancée out of the way of car before he’s hit, killed

By Aaron Barker | www.click2houston.com

HIGHLANDS, Texas – A cyclist saved his fiancee’s life Monday before he was hit and killed by a vehicle near Highlands, according to authorities.

The crash was reported about 7 p.m. on Barbers Hill Road near Madeline Street.

According to a tweet from Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a man and his fiancée were riding their bikes when he heard or saw something that caused him to push his fiancée off her bike. The man was then hit from behind by a vehicle.

The man died at the scene, Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said the driver who hit the cyclist stayed at the scene.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Project to cut vehicle lanes, add space for pedestrians, bikes on Cullen near UH

Those Zwift ads on TV make it look so simple!! Not for me.

Texbiker.net Posted on October 21, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 21, 2019

I am still trying to get a Zwift workout to start up smoothly without any problems. I thought today was going to be the day but not the case.

Opening the Zwift app I selected an event with what I thought was plenty of time before starting. This allowed me to get the Blue Norcross AL setup, water bottle with ice, position the fan, pair the sensors, get dressed, mount my phone on the handlebar, and be ready at the start. I selected a group ride for experience and staying together.

Dressed and ready to go the internet went offline about 5 minutes before the start. This caused all of the sensors to go haywire it seems. It came back after my ride started but not too late so I got on the Blue and pedaled away only to see the cadence sensor wasn’t connected. I knew the battery was around 37% but I thought it was enough for the ride, wrong. I pulled out a new battery, inserted it into the sensor but it wouldn’t connect to Zwift event though the blue LED blinked. I tried several times to get it working and then unplugged the Wahoo Kickr Snap trainer hoping that would work. It fixed it and back on the bike but now I was a lap behind.

Then I remembered I forgot to start the OBS program to record the ride. Off the bike again to start OBS and back on the bike. Those Zwift ads on TV make it look so simple!! Not for me.

The good news, I rode 21.11 miles which put me over my 50 mile goal for the month. 50 miles wasn’t that much but the way the weather has been for road biking I thought it was realistic. Tuesday’s weather forecast looks favorable to return to the outdoors.
