About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwifting After The Cold Arrived Bike Rides

Texbiker.net Posted on October 11, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 11, 2019

The promised cold front arrived this morning prompting me to stay indoors and renewing my activity on Zwift. The temperature got down to 60 around the time I usually leave on my ride. Since I am new to Zwift and learning the in’s and out’s I messed around before actually starting. I wanted to stream my ride on YouTube.com which meant starting the Open Broadcasting Software (OBS) program and figuring out how to set it up.

At first I wanted to include a webcam window along with the Zwift window but that got complicated so I left that out for today but maybe the next time now that I have reacquainted myself with all of the parts.

I am using the free trial of Zwift to stretch out my experience before putting money on the table and subscribing at $14.99 per month.

I joined the first ride in progress because setting up OBS and getting everything running. After I started the ride I forgot to get a water bottle so I stopped in the middle to get it. I walked out of range of my phone with the Zwift app connecting my heart rate monitor. I went through the steps to get that connected again and by then the Wahoo Kickr and cadence sensor stopped too. Next time, remember the water bottle.

The video of Zwift ride #1 today. I rode 11.98 miles but I wanted to ride at least 20 so I did ride #2 after ending the first one.

The second ride followed the Richmond 2015 UCI World’s course which I happened to be there and watched. I did slightly better recording this workout. By the second ride sweat dripped from my arms and forehead. The last 1/2 mile was uphill and I worked hard to get to the top before ending the ride which happened to be one lap.

These two workouts on Zwift totaled 22.4 miles and I count them towards my October goal which stands at 347.99 miles. Almost halfway to 700 miles.

Saturday morning looks cold too but Zwifting indoors will be warm.

Woodlands to partner with GHORBA for new off-road bike trail in Creekside Park

By Jeff Forward | www.chron.com

Local and regional off-road and mountain biking enthusiasts will be able to use a new trail in 2020 in The Woodlands as plans for a 3-mile multi-use connector trail are being worked on in a collaborative effort between The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Department and the Greater Houston Off-Road Biking Association, which is also known as GHORBA.

Chris Nunes, the director of the township’s Parks and Recreation Department, said that he and department staff had a $10,000 budget initiative approved by the township’s board in September that will help fund the new 3-mile trail in Rob Fleming Park, which …

El Rancho Cima

By notyal | austinmountainbiking.com

Tonight, I attended a public meeting for El Rancho Cima, the former Boy Scout camp on the Devil’s Backbone between San Marcos, Wimberley, and Canyon Lake. There is a very promising opportunity for Hays County to purchase a 500+ acre tract of the property for a public park with access to the Blanco River. Other than the riverfront, which would be open to public swimming (by reservation only), the other 500+ acres would be set aside for conservancy habit for Golden Cheeked Warblers with limited trail access on the existing Boy Scout trails during non-mating season. Unfortunately, everyone I spoke with at the meeting, including the woman who presented the master plan for the property, were less than open to the idea of allowing single track to be built in the park.

I’m not going to preach to the choir here about …

7 Reasons Why I Didn’t Do a Charity Bike Ride This Year

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

We like to try to keep things positive here at A Dude Abikes. And by we, I mean me. There is plenty of negativity in the news these days, what with that “You Crane” issue. (At least it’s not a Me Crane.) And sure, I gripe about my fitness level or other health issues, loss of my lighter bike Sookie, and so on. Don’t get me wrong: The rides are all great events and causes which I still support. Make no mistake, my credentials are well-established. I’ve done six rides (three breast cancers, two AIDS and one MS) – and raised over $12,000 in the process. So forgive me if in this post if I get into a wee bit of real-ness about …

Apple Fritter Power vs Wind Power Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 10, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 10, 2019

Today’s bike ride took me north to New Caney on the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route. I biked 36.86 miles moving the week’s total to 148.61 miles and October to 325.56 miles leaving 374.4 miles to reach the goal for October. Down the driveway and the ride started at 11:03 AM.

A nice 14 to 18 mph south wind pushed me to New Caney and then Gene Campbell Road. I knew somewhere I would pay the price for the tailwind. It came when I turned onto FM 1314 from Gene Campbell Road. FM 1314 goes southeast and the wind came out of the south. I kept my speed high enough to hold the overall average speed at 14.2 mph until I stopped at Pat’s Donuts for an apple fritter to fuel me back to Kingwood. I lost 1/10 mph while ate the fritter but gained it back by pushing the pedals hard enough into the headwind. Turning right off of FM 1314 put me among some trees and houses cutting the wind off some until I hit the open spaces by the two schools. Like pedaling in sand my speed slowed until I got back to the wind breaks. Overall average speed held at 14.2 mph through Oakhurst but when I got to the US59 frontage road I lost a 1/10 mph from the headwind. The u-turn under US59 and biking north meant a tailwind but I turned right to go to Loop 494 and slowed. By the time I got into Kings Manor my average speed still showed 14.1 mph but winding streets and stop signs drug it down. My legs ran out of apple fritter power and my speed slowed to the finish. With this Strava said today’s ride was harder than my usual effort.

Weather as I biked the route: start 91 (62% humidity, 75.9 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 14 mph. Finish 91 (55% humidity, 72.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 18 mph. Today might be the last 90+ degree day for awhile. A cold front arrives Friday mid-morning dropping temperatures into the 50’s at night for several days. Rain may accompany the change impacting my bike ride but I wait for the actual results.
