About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike lanes on busy streets considered safer than neighborhood roads, say parents

by: Eric Henrikson | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Parents are more willing to let their kids ride a bike on a busy street with a protected bike lane than to let them ride in their own neighborhood, according to a new survey out of Rutgers University. In the survey, parents looked at several types of roads: neighborhood streets with narrow roads, ones with wide roads, park trails, and busy streets with protected bike lanes. The parents placed park trails at …

Rare Venture Into Liberty County Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 9, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 9, 2019

I started today’s bike ride at 11:20 AM after messing around with the Tablo DVR and other computer stuff. I also delayed waiting for the weather to warm up slightly which it happened quicker than I thought. Earlier I watched the Milano-Torino bike race on Flobikes.com. Michael Woods with EF Education First won the race going up a steep hill at the end.

No steep hills on my route today. The “May Park Community Center – Huffman” route contains no hills which caused a problem for some people during the heavy rain on September 19th flooding FM 1960 east of Huffman.

I rode 41.24 miles improving the week’s total to 111.76 miles and October to 288.71 miles leaving 411.3 miles to reach my goal. With 6,590 miles YTD I only need 210 miles to reach my goal for 2019.

When I stopped at the May Community Center I ate a snack before going inside for ice and water. The center helps people who suffered flooding and several were there talking to helpers.

Relive shows the route with highs marked.

Relive ‘Rare Venture Into Liberty County’

Seeing two other bikers at FM 2100 came unexpectedly but I caught them on the ride video along with some other highlights.

Weather while I rode into Liberty County: start 85 (68% humidity, 73.1 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 6 mph. Finish 87 (65% humidity, 73.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 7 mph. While the summer heat let up some due to a cool 63 degrees around sunrise it perked up by the time I got on the road.

Fall Weather Bike Ride on Kingwood-SH242-Kingwood Route

Texbiker.net Posted on October 8, 2019 by Rick AnkrumOctober 8, 2019

Wow! Fall weather dropped in on us and it got cool overnight; 64 degrees. The start time of 11:10 AM came about as I waited for the temperature to warm up a few degrees. No sense rushing out the door and over dressing.

The route lasted 37.46 miles improving the week’s total to 70.52 miles and the month to 247.47 miles. I need 452.5 miles to reach my goal. Year to date I am at 6,549 miles, only 251 miles away from my goal.

Speaking of miles, after yesterday’s bike ride I waxed the chain because it made some noises. The previous wax job was 1200 miles ago. The turned smoothly and quietly on today’s ride.

Weather during the time on the bike: start 75 (70% humidity, 64.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind NE 10 mph. Finish 80 (64% humidity, 66.4 dew point), a few clouds, wind NW 4 mph. The light breeze kept me cool and helped on the way back to Kingwood.

Relive shows the ride in motion.

Relive ‘Kingwood – SH242 – Kingwood’

Before the ride I aired up the tires to 100 psi and you can tell it during the video whenever I go over a bump or expansion joint in the road. Moving the camera forward about 1/4″ helped with lessen my hands showing but the brake levers still show.
