About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Local church looking to help veterans facing hardships

www.kgns.tv

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) – A local place of worship is looking to help our fellow heroes who are facing hardships.

The Laredo First Assembly Church is looking to raise on veterans suicide by hosting a special event to help those in need.

Life after the service can be quite difficult for veterans as they face many challenges trying to adjust to a normal life.

Former Vietnam veteran Dave Roever of the Roever Foundation grew up in south Texas and served in the Vietnam War.

Dave was severely injured while serving in Vietnam and faced many difficulties when he came back.

In an effort to help other veterans who might be struggling, Dave’s brother Matt Roever has been cycling from Canada to Mexico to raise awareness on the issue. …

Group Ride guidelines. Feedback please

###bBy The Tip | austinmountainbiking.com Crank and Drank has gotten to be a pretty well attended ride each week. It’s hard to educate everyone on things that will make the ride go better. I came up with the following list. I am presenting it here to get feedback to anything I missed. Also anything that needs not be said.

I think the optimum number in a group is 10. We don’t always get enough ride leader volunteers (that will be another thread!) so sometimes we have up to 20 in a group. That is all the more reason to …

Thin Wire Tried to Let the Air Out of Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 25, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 25, 2019

In my rush to get started on today’s bike ride I almost skipped going to the garage for my pre-ride tire squeeze routine. But fortunately I went anyway. the front tire squeezed great but when my fingers wrapped around the tire I noticed a softness. I moved the Canyon out into the sun light, rotated the rear tire looking for the culprit. After turning the tire about half way around I saw the problem, a piece of thin wire stuck out of the tire with a 2 or 3 inch tail. So much for a quick departure. I took the rear wheel out of the back of the Canyon, used the tire tools to remove one bead and pulled the tube out. The small made it difficult to find so I pumped up the tube, put my lips near the spot and felt the faint air escaping from the tube. I roughed up the tube, put a sheet rock screw in the hole to mark the spot, applied glue and then a patch. Satisfied the patch covered the hole I pushed the tube back in the tire, remounted the bead and pumped it up. I all the supplies away and squeezed the tire before heading back inside to get ready. The firm tire signaled the patch held and the bike ride was on.

After all of this I started the bike ride at 10:31 AM on the planned route of “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road”. I wanted ride at least 35 miles and ended up biking 36.76 miles. The week now totals 106.97 miles and 536.98 miles for September, 163 miles away from my goal of 700 miles.

The weather felt good but the blue sky held a lot more clouds than yesterday. Weather while I biked: start 87 (68% humidity, 75.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph. Finish 87 (64% humidity, 73.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph.

I believe this is the first I biked this route with the GoPro camera. Clips from various spots along the route. Nothing out of the ordinary along the route other than signs from the rain last week. I finished the ride at 1:24 PM.

Weather for Thursday should repeat today and I will ride.

Sunbeams All The Way to Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 24, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 24, 2019

The clouds left as forecasted and the sun moved in as I began today’s bike ride at 10:55 AM. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route and biked 32.66 miles, just enough to hit 500.23 miles for the month. This leaves 200 miles to reach my goal. It looks like it be close to hit my goal if the weather lets me.

Weather while I biked today: start 91 (63% humidity, 76.5 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 9 mph. Finish 91 (57% humidity, 73.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 12 mph. After the rain last week it is great to see sun and lower humidity. This should continue until Friday, maybe beyond that.

It looked like the roads closed when I biked this direction on Saturday are now open: Old Atascocita Road, FM 1960 east of Huffman, and FM 1485 north of Huffman.

I plan on biking Wednesday.
