About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Shoal Creek Bike Lanes: Wheels Are in Motion

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

The Austin Transportation Department has made good on plans to enhance bike lanes on Shoal Creek Boulevard. This may not be earth-shattering news considering how the US — currently led by a sociopathic, deranged lunatic — may go to war with Iran at any moment over bombing Saudi Arabian oil production facilities. We may not be able to do much about that, but riding one’s bicycle down a safer street with a protected bike lane reduces …

Flooded Roads Disrupts Bike Rides Near Huffman

Texbiker.net Posted on September 21, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 21, 2019

Sun greeted me as I rolled out on the bike ride at 8:21 AM, a little later than usual for a Saturday. I chose the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route as usual wondering if I would see any other cyclists due to the possible flooding in the area around Huffman.

The ride totaled 37.04 miles, boosting the week’s total to 146.33 miles. September stands at 399.91 miles, including the Zwift miles from Wednesday. I am 300 miles away from my goal for the month. If the weather cooperates I may get close.

Weather along the ride: start 76 (99% humidity, 75.3 dew point), a few clouds, wind SE 7 mph. Finish 90 (67% humidity, 77.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph. It felt cool at the start but the high humidity got my sweat rolling not long after the start.

On Saturday I usually see other cyclists as I go across Lake Houston and then to FM 2100. Today there were not very many. I found Old Atascocita Road closed from high water and FM 1960 going to Dayton was closed as well. I don’t ride north from Huffman very often but today FM 1485 was closed at the East Fork of the San Jacinto River a big sign said in Huffman.

Today’s video shows some of the cyclists and some passed before I could turn the GoPro on.

I finished the ride at 11:29 AM and when I went inside I realized how much humidity I collected as I took off my bike shorts. It reminded me of getting out of the swimming pool.

I plan on biking Sunday after church to help get closer to my goal and for sightseeing around the area.

Imelda’s Aftermath Bike Ride to Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on September 20, 2019 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 20, 2019

No Zwift today. Instead I got out on the roads biking to the north. Earlier I thought about biking to Huffman but on Twitter I saw that Houston TranStar reported FM 1960 at FM 2100 had high water. My route would have went through that spot so I changed to what I call the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route.

The ride started at 11:01 AM and finished at 2:02 PM. during that time I rode 36.68 miles. The week totals 109.29 miles including the Zwift miles from Wednesday. September now totals 362.87 miles but only 337.5 miles count towards my 700 mile goal for the month. I separated the indoor Zwift miles. I need 362.5 miles to reach my goal. With the weather setback I may not reach my goal but I will ride whenever I can. Speaking of miles, I only need 6 more miles to reach 13,000 on my Canyon Endurace CF SLX bike.

Yesterday (Thursday) Tropical Storm Imelda dumped a large amount of rain in my area as well as other places in Southeast Texas. Today as I rode I could see evidence of what all of that water did. The weather hasn’t completely recovered as you will see in my ride video. I chose to stop at Woodridge Forest Middle School around the 5 mile point because of light rain coming down. I stayed there about 5 minutes. The roads were already wet and the rain loosened up the dirt on the streets to make for a messy ride.

Weather while I biked: 88 (79% humidity, 80.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. Finish 81 (80% humidity, 74.2 dew point), cloudy, wind S 12 mph. After I finished the ride and checked my phone the radar showed rain to the NW, not far from where I rode. Hopefully the roads dry off and the water goes down for Saturday’s ride.

North of FM 1314 the roads finally dried off some so the mud splatter my Canyon bike decreased some. By then my shoes were dirty, I’m sure the back of my jersey was too.
