About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

We Pause This Activity While Life Goes On Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 22, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 22, 2019

I thought I would ride to Huffman today but checking the weather radar before leaving home I spotted some rain to the east of Huffman so I changed to the “New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst” route going to the north. I biked 32.36 miles. My August miles now total 576.03 miles, 72% of my goal. The ride started at 11:31 AM and finished at 1:57 PM.

This will be my last bike ride for awhile. My wife asked me to stay home as she battles cancer as a hospice patient.

Weather during the bike ride: start 93 (65% humidity, 79.8 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SE 6 mph. Finish 95 (55% humidity, 75.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. I continue to feel a change in the weather intensity even with the temperature in the mid 90’s.

This was a one water bottle refill bike ride today. When i stopped I noticed a car with Ohio license plate and when the man walked to the door at the New Caney Mobil station I asked him where he was from in Ohio. He said from Dayton and I told him I grew up in Zanesville which he said he drove through several times on I-70. He told me he was driving from Rustin, LA, to see his doctor because this doctor looked him in the eyes when they talked. He told me he lived in Houston before Rustin. I agreed about his reason for driving that far to see his doctor; good ones are hard to find.

I didn’t take as much video as previous rides.

Video: Cyclists ready for HHH despite serious injuries

By Brenda Robledo | www.newschannel6now.com

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (TNN) – Two Wichita Falls cyclists who were hit on the road while riding are gearing up for the Hotter’N Hell Hundred.

"It was weird. I mean it was honestly just starting over again," said Gaelen Mills, a Wichita Falls cyclist. "Trying to keep my balance and figure out how to peddle and stuff like that."

Mills described his first ride a very humbling experience. It took him six months to get back on his bike after a traffic accident in October that put him in the hospital.

"I had a …

Dusty Road Over Lake Houston Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 21, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 21, 2019

The last bike ride was on Saturday and it was good to be back on the bike again. Due to time limits I chose a shorter route that I call “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway”. I biked 27..09 miles boosting August’s total to 543.7 miles, 68% of my goal. It look’s like my string 200+ mile weeks will come to an end but that’s okay. I am ahead of my year’s goal and exceeded each month’s goal so far this year. I don’t know if I will hit my goal for August but I will try.

Star time was 11:09 AM and finishing time was 1:09 PM.

Things at home are very difficult with my wife in the final stages of breast cancer and in hospice care. My oldest daughter and son-in-law have been here since July 4th helping. The nurses and staff of the hospice have been wonderful as we live through this. My wife’s friends visiting her hugging and loving her and me has been uplifting. God has been with us as we walk through this trying time. This has impacted biking but she comes first.

Weather during today’s bike ride: start 93 (58% humidity, 76.0 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph. Finish 96 (54% humidity, 76.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph. While it was hot I sense that fall is creeping closer in the way the wind feels.

Video highlights from the bike ride. Watch the video for the title’s origin.

I am not sure I will bike on Thursday but the weather will be favorable.
