About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Junk Man’s Story, Not The Only One Out Riding; Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 6, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 6, 2019

A later start today put me in the hot part of the day as I rode the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route for 42.5 miles. The ride started at 11:45 AM and finished at 3:26 PM.

Weather while I rode: start 91 (65% humidity, 77.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph. Finish 91 (65% humidity, 77.9 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 4 mph. I wasn’t the only cyclist out in the heat.

As I neared Ramsey Road on Old Atascocita road I glanced in my mirror and saw another cyclist approaching from the back. I made a circle at the intersection to aim my GoPro camera to catch him on video and waved. He waved back. Later when I was returning to Kingwood on a side street riding to W. Lake Houston parkway 3 HPD bike patrol officers passed in front of me riding south. They looked cool in their bright shirts smoothly pedaling their mountain bikes

Earlier in the ride I stopped at the Chevron station on FM 1960 at Atascocita Shores Drive. As I walked my bike to the store a man approached me from a pickup truck loaded with stuff. We started talking and he told me about some bikes he picked up from the curb at houses in the surrounding neighborhoods. He described a Specialized square tube mountain bike and a Gary Fisher bike that were in good condition but needed cleaning. He told me about some expensive speakers still in the boxes and other stuff. He also told me about a collision he had on Atascocita Road and all of the injuries he received showing me a few scars. It was a great conversation, I just wish I had my GoPro turned on to record it.

The ride lasted 3:40:49 and covered a lot of streets. The video compressed all that time into 2:44 and hit the high points.

Wednesday the humidity should go down and the temperature go up but I plan on biking.

Journey of Hope, a cross-country cycling trip to raise awareness for those with disabilities, stops in Danville

By John R. Crane | www.godanriver.com

Twenty-year-old Taylor Babb did leg presses, rode his bike and built his strength to train for a cross-country bicycle trek with his fraternity brothers to support people with disabilities.

“Definitely pushing through the pain,” Babb said just after chowing down on pizza to replenish his carbs at The Hatcher Center at U.S. 29 just outside Danville on Monday afternoon. …

That stretch of the trip is part of the team’s 4,370-mile event that started in California, moved east through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia before heading north through the Carolinas and Virginia. …

A Few Large Drops, GoPro Video, Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 5, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 5, 2019

Sunday was a rest day but Monday (today) I was back on the Canyon bike riding the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route. The ride started at 11:18 AM with my legs rested and ready to pedal strongly. Today’s ride went 41.63 miles pushing August to 149.81 miles.

Weather while I rode: start 88 (70% humidity, 76.6 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 4 mph. Finish 95 (53% humidity, 75.1 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NW 5 mph. When I was exiting Woodridge Forest a few large rain drops hit me and I wondered if I was wrong when I told my oldest daughter that it wouldn’t rain today. But it didn’t last few hundred yards as I rode west on E. Knox Drive. Near the end of the ride as I was in South Woodland Hills Village in Kingwood large drops fell again but lasted even less than before.

Day 2 using my GoPro Hero7 White. I took clips along the route in the video below. The video sums up the ride.

I finished the ride at 2:56 PM.

Tuesday’s weather is supposed to be warmer and drier. I will go for another 40+ mile ride.

Spring Creek Greenway Law Enforcement?

Nathan G. | www.strava.com

I saw the following post on Facebook this morning. Are they really stopping cyclists using the trail?

”FYI to anyone who uses the Spring Creek Greenway (not to be confused with the Spring Creek Nature Trail in case you’re unaware) for cycling:

Beginning today 8/3/19 and moving forward, the sheriff and constables are policing the Spring Creek Greenway between Dennis Johnston Park, Pundt Park, Carter Park and Jesse Jones Park. They have devices to detect speeds and are issuing tickets for greater than the 10mph or 15mph posted speed limits. They are also monitoring the Dismount Zones at the various stop signs and are issuing tickets if you do not Totally get off your bike and walk it across. This is an ongoing effort to make the trails safe for all.

Spread the word.” …

from a comment: "Randy “Col.” Davis Yes they are! Yesterday (Saturday, August 3 at approximately 9:00am) I personally was stopped by a Deputy Constable at one of the stop signs because I did not come to a complete stop and dismount. The officer was very nice and explained that they had an accident a few days prior where somebody was exceeding the posted speed limit around a curve and ran into another rider breaking the other riders collarbone therefore, the Constable informed them that they are to start writing tickets for not stopping at stop signs or exceeding the speed limit on the path. (Remember my statement that he was very nice? He was! He did not give me a ticket but, clarified that it was a verbal warning.) Safe Riding my fellow peddlers! Make It a GREAT Day! The Col.™"

##The Trailist: Madrone Trail Offers Secluded, Direct Access to Canyon Lake

Roseanna Garza | therivardreport.com

Texas natives aren’t strangers to Canyon Lake, but most have not heard of Madrone Trail, a 7.6-mile point-to-point hike and bike trail that winds its way through a peninsula along the north side of the body of water.

When trying to beat the sweltering triple-digit heat, people aren’t typically looking to add in any cardio other than swimming, but for those in search of a scenic, moderate-to-difficult hike or bike experience where you can …

Texas Bicycling from Twitter

Highland St bike lanes at #UNT are being discussed at Monday's Traffic Safety Commission meeting. Draft designs show a two-way cycletrack with plastic posts every 40 ft, which means most cars and trucks can easily enter and block the bike lanes. pic.twitter.com/3jqozn7MHK

— Bike Denton (@bikedenton) August 5, 2019

The reason for spacing the plastic posts so far apart is that UNT is concerned the road will look cluttered. So effectively, the current plan is to NOT protect the bike lane and to design it so cars may continue to block it and force people to ride into oncoming car traffic. pic.twitter.com/KcTefaq6S7

— Bike Denton (@bikedenton) August 5, 2019

How do you feel about this draft design? Let the Traffic Safety Commission know by speaking at the meeting: Mon. 8/5 @ 5:30 PM in City Hall work session room (215 E McKinney St). Fill out a speaker's card outside the room and ask who to hand it to. You'll have 3 mins to speak. pic.twitter.com/2MclJkST5s
