About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Private landowners’ concerns slow Austin’s plans for Shoal Creek landslide work

by: Will DuPree | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A bluff along Shoal Creek gave way more than a year ago during a landslide, and the City of Austin is still not able to set a timeline on the work to secure the hillside and reopen the hike and bike trail.

Mike Kelly, the city’s managing engineer, told KXAN that the city is making progress on negotiating with a contractor and working on engineering plans to deal with the landslide area, which extends from Shoal Creek Boulevard to 24th Street. …

The City Cyclist’s Friend: Convenience Store Clerks

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

After another convenience store stop to refill my water bottle with ice and water, have an indoor nature break, and to refuel, I began thinking about the modern day oasis. There’s many a night when I feel the need, the need for speed (or at least my slow version of it) and also get hungry, in other words, have a snack attack. Plus, I simply must get out of the Texas heat and humidity, and these little shops fit the bill. It occurred to me that these places …

BikeHouston Ambassadors Rock!

By Dr. Inge Ford | bikehouston.org

August 2019

Houstonians typically don’t suffer from an aura of largesse when it comes to doing stuff. But, taking action with laser focus, well that may require a conversation over some brisket and brew. No matter because our BikeHouston Ambassadors rock with intention and they take ACTION!

Bicycle Education And Advocacy-How Does This Work?

### By Dr. Inge Ford | bikehouston.org

Many think the importance of bicycle education is to simply teach people how to ride bicycles and provide lessons on safety. While important, this is not the sole purpose of bicycle education. Currently, more people in the United States are exploring and riding bicycles as a viable means of transportation and as a fun healthful mobility option, especially for short trips. People require varied ways to get around and bicycling is just one way. We see many …

Are We Enforcing The Safe Passing Law?

bikehouston.org

As vulnerable road users, we need full use of our senses to see and hear cars and trucks to aid in avoiding a crash. Additionally, we need to take extra measures to ensure our safe ride. Personally, when out riding I slow down as I approach an intersection to make sure it is clear to cross. As the driver of a vehicle (my bicycle), I must stop at stop signs and red lights. Even when I have a green light or no stop sign, someone in a car or truck might not be not looking out …

A Dead Battery, Missing Shade Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 1, 2019 by Rick AnkrumAugust 1, 2019

I walked out to the garage to get my Canyon bike and start the bike ride. I pressed the Powerpod start button, spun the front wheel to wake the speed sensor, and turned the crank several times to wake the cadence sensor. Looking at the Wahoo Elemnt the speed sensor didn’t appear to be working. On previous rides I thought the battery might be getting low so I took the sensor off the front wheel and went inside to install a new CR2032 battery. Taking the old battery out I tested it and it showed as almost dead. I checked the new battery and got a full reading and put it in the sensor. Back on the patio I mounted the speed sensor on the front hub (not an easy task getting around the spokes), spun the wheel and the Elemnt reported all sensors connected. Finally I was ready to ride.

Going down the driveway I pressed “Start” at 11:26 AM to begin biking on the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route to start August. I wanted to ride far enough to get August off to a good start and ride 200+ miles for the week. With today’s 37.46 miles I did both. The week now totals 145.93 miles leaving 55 miles for the next two days which should be possible.

Thanks to the rain happening in the evenings or not at all July was a weather friendly month. I hope August is the same though my yard could use some rain. Weather during today’s bike ride:start 88 (73% humidity, 78.0 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 4 mph. Finish 94 (55% humidity, 75.0 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 6 mph.

I planned to take a break when I got to Ramsey Road and turned left to the bridge. Riding earlier in the day there was shade over the east side of the road but today when I got there the place where I was going to sit was in the sun so I stood on the west shoulder in the shade and ate a package of Ritz cheese crackers and rank ice water. I had stopped at the Chevron station at the traffic light just west of Lake Houston to refill my bottle with ice and water for when I took my break. The water was cold and tasted good as the light breeze blew. Before leaving I took these two photos to show the puffy clouds in the blue sky. A typical Texas summer look. The first photo looks to the north and the second looks south. (Click on the photo to enlarge it)

  • 8-1-2019 Bike Ride Ramsey Road N-1
  • 8-1-2019 Bike Ride Ramsey Road N-2

Leaving the rest stop I rode back to FM 2100 and then north to Huffman. I pulled into the Chevron station to refill my bottle but I saw the out of order sign still attached to the fountain machine so I didn’t stop and rode to the Shell station west along FM 1960. No Fastenal Man at the pump this time. A quick refill and I was back on the bike heading home to Kingwood. I finished the ride at 2:36 PM.

I wasn’t able to get my average speed up to 14 mph today. My legs just wouldn’t power me fast enough and long enough. I would label today as a recovery one.

July Bike Rides End On High Level: Goal Exceeded

Texbiker.net Posted on July 31, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 31, 2019

Great bike ride to wrap up July biking. I chose the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and rode 34.58 miles. This put July’s total at 958.03 miles, 158 miles over my goal. Start time was 11:16 AM in time to catch the warm part of the day and finished at 2:04 PM before it hits peak heat.

A recap of July’s rides. I biked 27 out of 31 days. Average ride distance was 35.48 miles. Longest ride was 48.43 miles on the Spring Creek Greenway July 1st.

Today’s bike ride weather: start 88 (76% humidity, 79.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 5 mph. Finish 94 (59% humidity, 77.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind N 8 mph.

In Tavola I stopped at the community center and pool to take these photos.

  • 7-31-2019 Bike Ride Tavola Pool-1
  • 7-31-2019 Bike Ride Tavola Pool-2

I stopped for ice and water two times: Shell station on Roman Forest Blvd. and Stripes on FM 1314.

Thanks to a modest tailwind the ride back from Tavola to Kingwood hit a higher speed pulling my average up to 13.9 mph before dropping as I entered Kings Manor and into Kingwood.

The weather will continue into August as will my riding. My August goal is 800 miles.
