About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No experience, no problem for Rice grad student turned top fundraising cyclist

KATHARINE SHILCUTT | news.rice.edu

Sudha Yellapantula didn’t even like riding bikes before she signed up to raise money for pediatric cancer research in the 2019 Great Cycle Challenge. But that didn’t stop the Ph.D. student in Rice’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from becoming the challenge’s No. 1 individual fundraiser in the nation, and in only one month.

“I actually hate biking,” said Yellapantula, who heard about the fundraising effort through friends. “I never enjoyed biking, but I thought: childhood cancer research, I gotta do this.”

A few days after signing up for the challenge on …

Cargo bike startup expands offerings and begins sales through IBDs

www.bicycleretailer.com

DENTON, Texas (BRAIN) — Bunch Bikes has expanded its cargo bike offerings and is now selling through bike shops in addition to its intial consumer-direct sale model.

Aaron Powell launched the company in 2017 as Urban Tribe Cargo Bicycles, a brand inspired by the personal finance blogger Mr. Money Moustache. Powell soon re-branded the company for legal reasons.

Bunch recently launched two new models. The company also is now the exclusive U.S. distributor for Melia cargo bike seats, from the Netherlands. The Melia seats, which fit all front-load cargo bike brands, provide a secure seat for kids too young to sit comfortably in a cargo bike’s box. Powell said the Melia distribution is …

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (TNN) – The City of Wichita Falls is moving forward with a project that will help them become a bicycle-friendly community in the future.

Dail Neely, a cyclist and member of Bike Wichita Falls, said he is excited to see FM 240, between Burkburnett Road and Missle Road, now designated as a bike lane.

“It’s a well-used cycling area already and so now having that sign so motorist know that we are going to be out there is going to be very helpful,” said Neely.

Fastenal Man From Tarkington Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 30, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 30, 2019

Sometimes an unexpected situation turns into a happy one. Normally I stop at the Huffman Chevron to refill my water bottle but today the fountain drink machine was out of order. I filled my bottle with cool water from the restroom to get me to the Exxon station at E. Lake Houston Parkway and FM 1960. Since I rode the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman Extended” route this took me north on FM 2100 and then west on Smith Road to E. Lake Houston Parkway. At the Exxon I went inside and fill my bottle with ice and went outside to the pumps to get a paper towel to wipe the bottle off and my lips too. As I rounded the pumps to the side with the paper towels there was a man filling up his pickup truck. He said my name and told me he recognized me from Strava where he follows me. I forgot to ask his name so he is the Fastenal Man. He had a blue Fastenal polo shirt and the truck had Fastenal signs on it. He lives in Tarkington and rides around there, mostly early in the day before sunrise. We talked about dogs and roads and biking. When he finished filling up the truck we said goodbyes as we went our way.

The rest of the ride was the usual with summer heat and sun. Weather while I biked: start 92 (66% humidity, 79.4 dew point), partly cloudy, wind SW 10 mph. Finish 97 (53% humidity, 77.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 8 mph. The heat index was 110 or so but as long as I was moving I didn’t really notice it. The arm sleeves really help keep me cool with wicking and wind flowing through them. Below is the airport weather at the end of the ride.

7-30-2019 Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

With today’s 34.01 miles I am starting the week in a way to reach 200+ miles which is good. July now totals 923.44 miles, the most in any month in 2019. The last month I rode more was August 2018 with 949.55 miles. I have one more day to bike in July which might put me higher than that. Year to date stands at 5,012 miles. Yesterday my Canyon Endurace CF SLX pass 12,000 miles and now sits at 12,046 miles.

The ride started at 11:17 AM and finished at 2:05 PM.

This wasn’t the fastest bike ride but Strava says it consistent with my usual efforts.

CISCO, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – If you’ve ever been to Cisco, you’ve definitely seen them. A dull street corner given new life, but the question on everyone’s mind is “Who’s behind it all?”

“It’s kinda like someone coming in through the middle of the night and all of a sudden things are appearing in Cisco,” said Cisco Mayor Tammy Douglas.

The woman behind it all? None other than resident Caryon Garrett who first started turning the gears on this unique project four years ago. …

Monday Bike Ride in The Heat and Sun

Texbiker.net Posted on July 29, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 30, 2019

Starting the week off with today’s bike ride I chose the “Oakhurst – Gene Campbell Road – Valley Ranch” route and rode 39.87 miles. The weather was the way I like it, hot and sunny. I started at 10:50 AM with a pang of missing the Tour de France on TV.

Weather while I rode: start 91 (63% humidity, 77.0 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 13 mph. Finish 95 (53% humidity, 75.1 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph. After I finished the ride at 2:14 PM I heard thunder and checking the weather radar saw some rain floating around to the north. Glad I got home before rain arrived.

The wind wasn’t too much of a problem since the route generally goes east and west. I managed to get my average speed up to 14.0 mph.

I stopped at the Circle K on FM 1314 and Sorters Road to refill my water bottle. Later at the Circle K at FM 1314 and I-69/US59 I stopped longer to eat a Clif Bar and drink blue PowerAde. I refilled my water bottle to get me home.

Tuesday I plan on biking to add to July’s mileage which stands at 889.43 miles, almost 90 miles over my goal. My Canyon Endurace CF SLX now has 12012.7 miles in rides since February 2018.

After all of the Zwift ads during the TdF I started checking it out for when the weather and the year becomes unfavorable for outdoor riding. It looks interesting but I have a problem. My main computers are a Google Pixelbook and an Acer Chromebook Spin 13 and Zwift doesn’t support Chrome OS. Also I don’t have a smart trainer. I could use the Zwift Android app but I am not sure how to get the action on a bigger screen.
