About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Raising awareness: Aggie and friends biked 1,700 miles to support trafficking victims

By CHELSEA KATZ | www.theeagle.com

Over the course of 45 days, Texas A&M senior Hadley Hanson and nine other cyclists biked from Seattle to San Diego in an effort to raise awareness about sex trafficking and human trafficking.

Hanson said the trip — which began in June and ended this week, traveling primarily on U.S. 101 and U.S. 1 along the West Coast — was amazing, calling it a life-changing experience.

The goal of the 1,700-mile trip — complete with camping and a few donated hotel rooms and host homes along the way — was not just something fun to do over summer break, but …

I was never a fan of #CriticalMass and its tactics back in the day, but in the end, it brought awareness and change to #Austin streets. Is it time to bring this back to #ATX? Is this what we need to do to get #atxcouncil and our citizens to take #VisionZero seriously? https://t.co/U8vCx4lcAP

Fully funding the bicycle and urban trails master plans is the first step to evolving the mobility culture in Austin. Once bike/ped travel is ubiquitous (15–20% of all trips should be the tipping point) motorists will wake up to necessity/value of alt trans. https://t.co/y3UkYfkPha

Week 11 at 200+ Miles, 20+ Bikers Along Route, Near Collision Miss Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 27, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 27, 2019

My plan got disrupted this morning when a delivery man rang our doorbell at 7:10 AM. After that everything went off the plan and I didn’t start today’s bike ride until 8:41 AM. I rode my usual Saturday route along on “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” in order to see other cyclists. No surprise I saw about 20 other cyclists starting in Kingwood and all the way to FM 2100. Ronnie Clark, who I rode with in the past, was one of them. I turned around just in time from taking a photo to hear him say, “I know that guy.” I had a plastic bag in mouth and could only mumble a response. I hope he heard me.

With today’s 31.67 miles the week’s total came in at 214.54 miles. This makes 11 weeks in a row of 200+ miles. I don’t know if I have done that before. July improved to 849.56 miles, 106% of my goal. YTD shows 4,939 miles, 73% of my 6,800 mile goal.

The low humidity weather ended today and the lower temperatures that came with it will leave today too. Weather during the bike ride: start 82 (82% humidity, 75.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind NE 5 mph. Finish 88 (69% humidity, 76.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 6 mph. Back to July summer weather.

Photos with other cyclists. Click on an image to enlarge it.

I missed on photo. When I tried to take it the Android Auto app came up instead. By the time I exited it the cyclists were gone.

On the return leg I rode on the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail. I almost collided with a man coming out of the shadows on my left carrying a trash can. With my dark sunglasses seeing when I move from bright sunlight to shadows takes a few seconds to adjust. Fortunately he saw me and stopped as I rode by.

This ride was a one water bottle refill ride. I stopped at the Shell station on FM 1960 by the Houston Fire Station.

I finished the ride at 11:18 AM. My average speed was low from stopping for photos and slowing down once I got back in Kingwood. Sunday will be a rest day.
