About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Blue Sky, Stiff Tailwind, Low Humidity Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 24, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 24, 2019

What a blue sky for today’s bike ride and humidity low enough to celebrate. The ride began at 11:07 AM as I set out on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. I biked 35.82 miles putting the week at 110.68 miles and July at 745.7 miles, 54.3 miles away from my goal of 800 miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 81 (58% humidity, 65.3 dew point), fair, wind NE 16 mph 23 mph gusts. Finish 86 (46% humidity, 63.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind N 16 mph. I was comfortable wearing arm sleeves with the low humidity. The dew point tells how dry it was.

On the way to I-69/US59 for the ride north I stopped in Woodridge Forest and took these photos to show the blue sky.

  • 7-24-2019 Bike Ride Woodridge Forest-1
  • 7-24-2019 Bike Ride Woodridge Forest-2

The flags in the background of the second photo give a hint about the wind I would face riding north to Tavola. I pedaled hard to get there slowly moving my average speed to 13.5 mph.

Riding east on Via Principale Parkway I stopped at Tavola Drive to take this photo because the sky was so blue in rearview mirror. In the distance is a Roman Forest Police cruiser approaching. When the cruiser pulled up beside me the officer asked if I was okay and wished me well as he drove on.

7-24-2019 Bike Ride Tavola By Pool

After leaving there I rode on a new street before returning to Roman Forest Blvd. The ride back to Kingwood was much faster with tailwind helping get up to 19 mph or more. This boosted my average speed to 14.4 mph. I thoroughly enjoyed the blue sky, tailwind and low humidity as I finished the ride at 1:48 PM.

Hopefully this weather last a couple of more days.

Council adopts new bicycle, master plan with prioritized projects for Lubbock

By Matt Dotray | www.lubbockonline.com

The Lubbock City Council adopted an updated Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan on Tuesday.

The approved plan for pedestrian and bicycle transportation is the first of its kind for Lubbock in over 20 years. As this new plan states, the quality of the current pedestrian network is poor, and there’s a strong cultural push toward bicycle facilities and improved pedestrian experiences.

Council members discussed the plan during a work session Tuesday afternoon, and voted unanimously to adopt it at the evening meeting. The city describes the new plan as a guide for future policy and construction. New construction will …

Dribs and Drabs About My Biking and Blogging

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

After the positive reception to my last post, The Bike Rider and the Farmer, it’s a little bit of a let-down to return to form. Little things, like that story inspired them to try a short story. Or by inviting someone to the Bike Curious social ride (in which I participated once again), they had to get their bike rack and bike in shape. Organizing a new bike gang is bringing in new people, too. But, writing about my biking, blogging, and …

Victory Park and the Design District May Soon Have a Trail Connecting Them

BY MATT GOODMAN | www.dmagazine.com

A long-awaited pedestrian and cycling connection from Victory Park to the Design District appears to be moving forward. The plan’s brushstrokes date back at least to 2016, when a nonprofit called the Circuit Trail Conservancy unveiled a 50-mile cycling loop that would extend from just west of White Rock Lake south to the Great Trinity Forest. From there, it would take you to the Design District via the Trinity Strand Trail along the levee and …

Fall Like Weather Arrived, More New Gloves Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 23, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 23, 2019

The cool weather moved into the area during the early morning making today feel like a fall bike ride. The overcast sky accentuated the coolness as I rolled out at 10:19 AM to follow the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I pedaled along for a total of 33.6 miles. July mileage totals 709.88 miles, 90 miles short of my goal for the month. I completed the ride at 1:07 PM.

Weather during the bike ride: start 79 (85% humidity, 74.4 dew point), overcast, wind N 13 mph. Finish 84 (75% humidity, 74.9 dew point), overcast, wind N 14 mph. With the cooler weather I left the arm sleeves at home but I wore wrist bands. I also put new red Pearl Izumi Elite Gel gloves into service.

7-23-2019 New Bike Gloves Pearl Izumi Elite Gel Red

I rode on the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail from Kings Park Way to E. Lake Houston Parkway and took these photos.

I was watching stage 16 of the TdF and one of the commentators mentioned the racers were riding in a 10 mph wind and how hard it was. It made me wonder because during today’s ride the wind was 13 to 14 mph how hard I must pedal. The ride was easier than my usual effort according to Strava’s magical evaluation. Riding east over Lake Houston was hard but the return trip going west was much easier with a tailwind.

The cool weather may hang around a couple more days making July biking feel like fall.

8-year-old reunited with his bike so nice it was stolen twice.

By Kim Brent | www.beaumontenterprise.com

Eight-year-old Vladimir Pitman has plans to soup up the low rider bicycle that he got back earlier this month after it had been stolen and was missing for nearly 2 weeks. It is the second time Vladimir’s bike has been stolen. Photo taken Wednesday, June 26, 2019 Kim Brent/The Enterprise

Vladimir Pitman, 8, has big plans for his 1960s-era Schwinn, a low-rider bicycle with scrolled green pinstriping. He wants to repaint it to match his father’s red and white 1960 Chevy Impala, put on a red velvet seat, attach speakers and maybe even add LED lights. …

Root Drop "Cheater Rock" Missing

By MrTheCatLady | austinmountainbiking.com

Rode Walnut Creek for the first time in about 3 weeks this weekend and noticed a change on the new-and-improved-and-less-likely-to-result-in-a-faceplant Root Drop. On the left-hand line, on about the second step down, there used to be a big rock just sort of sitting there, which made riding that line a little easier. The rock is now gone. Fine by me and all; I just wondered if anyone else had noticed. It made me …
