About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Community Health Fair Returns to Portland FUMC

By: Mike Gillaspia | www.kristv.com

PORTLAND, TX — First United Methodist Church of Portland is hosting its Fifth Annual Community Health Fair this Saturday.

This event marks the return of yet another ministry for the church, whose building sustained heavy damage by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The congregation was displaced from their campus for eleven months, meaning events like the Community Health Fair had to be put on hold. Now, however, the church is back in their buildings and resuming their outreach efforts.

The Coastal Bend Community Foundation has once again provided funding for costs related to the Health Fair, and bicycle helmets for children will be provided through the Hard Hats for Little Heads program of …

Joy Ride to Lake Conroe

Rick Rostkowski | www.strava.com

Joined Natalia, Christian, John & Nick for a fantastically pleasant ride to the lake. Awesome riding companions, an early start, combined with some unexpected cool breezes and forest shade made for a near perfect ride. Our pace was perfectly matched to our group thanks to Nick who pulled for about 50 miles and it’s fair to say all thrived today. Stops at Starbucks, a gas station and beers at the end gave us plenty of opportunity to visit and relax. Can’t wait for the next time!

Not Far Enough North To Be Cool Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 19, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 19, 2019

A bike ride to the north for a change this week. My available time expanded so I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route adding a few side streets to ride 40.01 miles. The ride started at 10:17 AM and I completed it at 1:45 PM.

Weather during the bike ride: start 90 (71% humidity, 79.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. Finish 95 (55% humidity, 76.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. With the heat and low humidity (for here anyway) this was a 3 water bottle ride. I stopped at the Shell station on Roman Forest Blvd., the Mobil station on FM 1485 in New Caney, and the Circle K store at FM 1314 and I-69/US59 Porter. The first two I was there just long enough to fill my bottle but a the Circle K I took a rest break. During the break I took this photo.

A gentle breeze cooled me down while I ate a blueberry crisp Clif bar and drank some blue PowerAde. to get to the finish.

According to Strava this was harder than your usual effort. Some physical data points:

  • average heart rate: 131 bps (75%)
  • maximum heart rate: 154 bps (88%)
  • average power output: 94 watts
  • maximum power output: 343 watts

I manage to get my average speed up to 14.1 mph but on the ride back to Kingwood it dropped to 13.8 mph because my legs weren’t energized to power into the headwind.

Saturday I need to ride 38+ miles to ride 200+ miles for the week. The weather looks good, I hope my legs are.

Bike Curious? Here’s the Perfect Pedal for a Slow Sunday Cycle in Austin

A Dude Abikes | adudeabikes.com

Years ago, I was pedaling past the World War II era airplane hanger at Austin’s former Robert Mueller airport, which I recall flying into right over where I lived. (Not the recent special investigator.) Now, Mueller is the one-word name (like Bono, Prince, or Sting) for the new urban, high-density (and high-cost) neighborhood that now sits on the former airport. Back then, somehow I’d been able to rent a room in pretty new row house owned by a nice gentleman from Ethiopia. That’s another story. …

Texas 4000 cycles through the Border City

The world’s longest charity bike ride made its way through the Border City this week in a cross-country fight against cancer. The Texas 4000 sees dozens of students from the University of Texas travel one of three routes from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska each year.

The journey, more than 4,000 miles long (about 6596 km), divides 83 cyclists among three different routes. The Ozarks route brings these intrepid individuals through Lloydminster by way of Winnipeg, via Saskatoon and North Battleford. It’s the route with the most miles, compared to the …

Bike Friendly South Dallas Has Bees in its Walls. That’s Actually Great News.

By Shawn Shinneman | www.dmagazine.com

A lot was going right last month for Bike Friendly South Dallas, the joy-and transportation-spreading South Dallas bike shop that uses an earn-a-bike model. The organization had scored sponsorship from The Real Estate Council’s Associate Leadership Council that brought around a quarter of a million dollars worth of renovations to its first-ever bike shop, located near Ervay and Al Lipscomb. The shop opened this month.

What could derail such momentum? Perhaps a beehive in the cinder block walls, which is what founder Stan Hart recently discovered. …

Inspired to Ride Hard

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2019

After watching stage 12 of the Tour de France I set out on today’s bike ride. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route and maybe watching the race inspired me to ride “harder than your usual effort” according to Strava. I biked 29.32 miles improving my July total to 554 miles, 69% of my goal.

Weather during the bike ride: start 92 (67% humidity, 79.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 95 (57% humidity, 77.5 dew point), partly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. I was down the driveway at 10:27 AM and finished at 12:39 PM.

Nothing unusual on today’s bike ride. The Atascocita Hike & Bike trail is getting used by people and a couple of workers worked on a ramp from a side street along Kings Park Way.
