About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sign-ups have started for Hell of the North Texas 2019

By Kim Cox | theparisnews.com

Signups have started for the Hell of the North Texas 2019, a Sunday sister-event to the Tour de Paris this weekend.

Kevin Lee with Spinistry, a sports promoter and one of the sponsors of the event, said the race was inspired by the classic Paris-Roubaix race. Originally, it combined road racing with some gravel paths, an homage to the original cobblestone French race, but now, Lee said, it’s become more of a …

Light Rain Keeps Me Cool Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 17, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 17, 2019

The bike ride started at 11:11 AM, a little later than I wanted but better than not at all. I chose the “Kingwood-E Lake Houston Pkwy Fire Station” route wanting to get enough miles to stay on the pace to reach my goal for July. I biked 30.4 miles pushing the week to 93.43 miles and July’s total to 524.68 miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 95 (61% humidity, 79.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. Finish 91 (71% humidity, 80.0 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. East of Lake Houston I rode in a light rain but on the way back west as soon as I got to the causeway it stopped. As I neared the end of the ride I could hear thunder in the distance and there were dark clouds to the north. I finished the ride at 1:33 PM avoiding the rain after I crossed Lake Houston heading back to Kingwood.

Bike rides may become scattered in the future. My wife, Hazel, is in hospice care due to cancer that has spread. She is not too bad so far but is getting weaker as time goes on. For now one of daughters (and son-in-law) is here with us and helping but I am not sure how long that may continue. It saddens me so much to see my wife of 43 years going through this but the Lord is watching over us and the hospice staff are there too.

Volunteers needed for 35th annual Tour de Paris || Cook talks intersection safety

By Trent Reed | eparisextra.com

According to David Cook, a volunteer with Tour de Paris, there’s a need for volunteers to help with intersection control during the 35th annual Tour de Paris to reach the preferred 60 volunteers.

“For ten years, when we started doing this, I coordinated all the volunteers to guard at the intersections from the civic center, toward the cemetery, toward town and around the plaza, then back,” Cook said. “I normally get …

Texas 4000 riders stop in Walker

Twenty-five college students from the University of Texas rode their bicycles into Walker from Brainerd in a driving rain July 9. The cyclists are on a 70-day road trip that started in Austin, Texas, June 1 and will end in Anchorage, Alaska, Aug. 9. The group, called Texas 4000 (TK4 for short), is one of three teams of cyclists — 75 in all — making …

Texas Mamma Jamma Breast Cancer Charity Training Ride #2: Bipping and Bonking Over 45 Miles

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

On Wednesday, I formed a neighborhood bike gang. On Friday, one of my intrepid new bike friends said that she might want to join me on this training ride the next morning. She (we’ll call her Max until I know I can use her real name) offered to pick me up in her mini-van. This was good news because of the start time being an hour earlier due to the Austin, Texas heat, so I wouldn’t have to bike the extra six miles.

A Dude is trying to become an early riser again, but it’s a struggle when people around you are so …

I live in the middle of SATN. I know my way around it pretty well at this point, although I don’t know the names of every segment. The network is very difficult to navigate due to its patchwork format, so riders new to the area will need a guide present or spend a lot of time staring at maps to get the most out of it. A physical guide is not always available and, from personal experience, guiding someone whose skills don’t match mine (either they are too fast or too slow) through the …

Electricity Fails But Bike Ride Prevails

Texbiker.net Posted on July 16, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 16, 2019

Drama as I left on today’s bike ride thanks to Centerpoint Energy and the electricity going off. Got everyone squared away and wheels rolled at 10:26 AM. I altered the planned route to “Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood” and rode 30.85 miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 89 (68% humidity, 77 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 13 mph. Finish 95 (61% humidity, 79.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. No rain threat during the ride today.

Nothing noteworthy during the ride and I finished at 12:54 PM.

Wednesday weather brings more heat but rain chance goes down.
