About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wise Choice on This Bike Ride Route

Texbiker.net Posted on July 15, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 15, 2019

I made a good choice on to the route for today’s bike ride. Checking the weather radar before I got ready to leave some rain showed to the north which I typically ride on Monday. With that I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route to the south and biked 32.18 miles. I started at 10:12 AM. Weather radar at the 12:37 PM finish of the ride. I could hear thunder to the north as I pulled into the driveway at the end of the ride and the sky was dark gray.

Bike Ride Airport Weather Radar Finish

I upped the pace some trying to get back home before the approaching rain. Average speed got up to 14.2 mph and I held it there until around the 30 mile point back in Kingwood. Strava told me this ride was harder than my usual effort.

Physical data from the ride:

  • Average heart rate: 137 bps (78%)
  • Max heart rate: 163 bps (93%)
  • Average power output: 109 watts
  • Max power output: 469 watts

The rain should be out of the area by Tuesday and I will be back on the road.

Relive ‘Morning Jul 15th’

Random Thoughts from the Life of a Car-Free Bicyclist in Austin, Texas

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

Sometimes there’s no one unifying theme to a blog post, but even then, there is still a framework. Today, it’s that many factors affect my cycling, and also that there’s more to life than cycling. (Impossible, I can hear some of you saying!) Here are a few of those thoughts. As to whether they’re Deep Thoughts, you’d have to ask Jack Handy, which is an old Saturday Night Live skit. Basically he had short quotes that were inane, so I’m not claiming any wisdom. I am just sharing my experience in hopes it educates, inspires or at …

New Trail at Reimer’s Ranch

By cxagent | austinmountainbiking.com

I have held off telling people about this new trail – until now. It is starting to come together and we will need volunteers soon. So here it is.

In 2017, Travis County hired a landscape architect to survey and design some new trails at Reimer’s Ranch. Our very own MTB trail builder, rider and instructor Jake Carston helped with the design work. The attached PDF file shows the overview of that trail design. The design sat on the shelf for a while. ARR got a grant from REI to start building those trails. That process has now started.

We will be building two of the 5 trails shown – marked I1 (Intermediate 1) and Return. These are intended to be Flow Trails. There is not enough elevation to call them Downhill Trails but there …
