About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Surprised By the Past On This Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 13, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 14, 2019

Somehow I started today’s bike ride at 7:54 AM, early for a Saturday bike ride. I chose the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” to position me to see other cyclists on the east side of Lake Houston. I saw about 20 other bikers along the route including 4 when I rode west on FM 1960 and came to Fairlake Drive. They were ahead of me and left me in the dust once they were over Lake Houston. An surprise happened on the west side of Lake Houston at the Mobil station when I pulled in to refill my water bottle. Two cyclists were there and I said hello and after leaning my bike against the store I walked over to chat with them. The younger man, with a better memory than me, remarked that he bought one of my previous bikes. He said he rode it for about a year before buying another bike. I think he bought my Motobecane Le Champion LTD.

The weather was windy today thanks to Hurricane Barry to the east near New Orleans. Weather during the bike ride: start 79 (87% humidity, 74.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 9 mph. Finish 85 (75% humidity, 76.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind N 21 mph.

My energy tank was drained starting when I rode through Walden and north. My speed dropped to 13 mph and below. I thought a rest stop would help so at Kings Harbor I stopped in the shade by Sharky’s restaurant where some people were working on furniture as part of the repairs from Hurricane Harvey. Another cyclist appeared and when I left we exchanged a few words about biking. From there my ride moved slowly as the wind made it hard. I stopped at McDonald’s in Town Center for more ice and water. I finished the ride at 10:45 AM. Maybe I bonked.

With today’s 32.83 miles the week totals 217.57 miles, the 9th week in a row of 200+ miles. July totals 431.25 miles , 54% of the way to my 800 mile goal.

Sunday, tomorrow, will be a rest day. I think I may be over training and a day off is in order.

Lawson Craddock’s ride continues after Tour de France crash

Melanie Hauser | www.houstonchronicle.com

It’s 7:30ish on a hot, humid July morning and Lawson Craddock is already cruising along the day’s training route on his bike.

Today, it’s the area northeast of Austin. Another day it might be the hill country. Or just around town. Could be three hours. Could be five. It varies as he puts in somewhere between 60 and 100 miles. Depending.

This is how you beat the heat in Texas, during early mornings when there’s a little less humidity; a bit cooler — it’s all relative in the …

Storm Barry to the East Ups the Wind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 12, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJuly 12, 2019

A short ride today to avoid the heat from Tropical Storm or Hurricane Barry in Louisiana. The route was 29.07 miles long as I rode “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway”. Starting at 10:10 AM I finished at 12:32 PM.

With those miles the week totals 184.74 miles, within reach of 200+ with a Saturday ride. July stands at 398.4 miles, almost halfway to the 800 mile goal.

From the storm to the east the wind picked up and made biking to the east hard. Weather during the bike ride: start 89 (71% humidity, 78.2 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 13 mph 23 mph gusts. Finish 94 (61% humidity, 78.4 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind NE 8 mph 21 mph gusts.

Day two with the Koobi saddle went well. My butt is recovering from the Fizik saddle with the much gentler sitting on the Koobi.

As it stands the stormy weather will be well east of Houston so a Saturday bike ride is in the plans.
