Not That Far to the Country and Other Cyclists

It isn’t far from the Houston city limits to get into the country. On today’s bike ride I felt like I was in the country with cows and pastures along the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route. Plenty of other bikers along the route too.

I started early at 8:18 AM hoping to see other cyclists and it didn’t take long to see the first one. From that point until I made the turn around at Ramsey Road 20 to 30 cyclists passed me, all going the opposite direction.

With the early start (for me anyway) the temperature was in the upper 70’s but the humidity was 98% making for a cool but damp start. As the ride progressed the temperature went up and the humidity went down. A few clouds dotted the sky allowing the sun to shine through. Glad I wore arm sleeves for sun protection and some cooling effect. Weather during the bike ride: start 77 (98% humidity, 76.2 dew point), a few clouds, wind calm. Finish 93 (64% humidity, 78.8 dew point), a few clouds, wind calm.

I continued east to Rmasey Road where I turned left and went to the second bridge. I normally stop at the first bridge but I wanted to see what was at the second one.

These two photos show the country pasture. Cows dot the field to the left of the photo edge. The few clouds are my idea of a good summer day. Up to this point the wind had been friendly but when I started back to FM 2100 the “calm” wind provided some resistance causing me to pedal harder than I did getting there.

FM 2100 took me north to Huffman where I stopped briefly at the Huffman Chevron to refill my water bottle.

Biking west on FM 1960 I altered my route slightly to skip Walden to the south and took some side streets to Pinehurst Trail Drive to begin the northerly ride back to Kingwood. The ride north was at a slower pace but I held my average speed until the 31 mile point. I finished the ride at 11:16 AM, almost 3 hours after the start. Moving time was 2:37:21 with most the difference stopping to take the photos.

This is the 8th week in a row of 200+ miles with 213.68 miles this week. I am 27% of the way to my 800 mile goal for July.

Sunday (tomorrow) is a rest day to prepare for next week.

Austin Public Works and Austin Transportation will host an open house from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday on the preliminary design for proposed changes Boggy Creek Trail from Rosewood Avenue to East 12th Street.

No Fireworks To Tavola and Back

Summer weather arrived for today’s bike ride. I started biking at 10:06 AM and it felt hot as I walked to the garage to get the Canyon and set out. I chose the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route riding to the north with tailwind. To protect my skin I wore arm sleeves even though you would think they would be hot. Actually I don’t notice them thanks to the wicking of sweat and the cooling effect. For the first time in several rides there were salt stains on them when I finished the bike ride at 12:55 PM.

With today’s 37.14 miles the week and month stand at 178.48 miles, 22% of my 800 mile goal for July. Year to date I am at 4,268 miles. I am on track for another 200+ mile week if Saturday weather permits. The forecast looks favorable for biking.

Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (76% humidity, 78.8 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind S 10 mph. Finish 94 (59% humidity, 77.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind variable 5 mph.

With the tailwind to Tavola I expected the ride back to the south to be into a headwind which it was but I actually improved my overall average speed during that section. It was 14.1 mph at the 32 mile point as I entered Kings Manor and then Kingwood.
