About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

June Wrap Up Bike Ride, Goals Accomplished

Texbiker.net Posted on June 29, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2019

Starting later than expected at 9:11 AM I wondered if I would see any other cyclists as I biked the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route. But there were still other cyclists out probably on the latter part of their rides. Overall I guess I saw 25 or so bikers along the route. After I got to FM 2100 in the ride I only saw few more.

My plan was to ride enough miles to put the week over 200 miles and the month over 900 miles. The 32.25 miles today accomplished both of those: 215.58 miles for the week and 908.67 miles for June. This is the 7th week in a row at 200 miles or more. The last month over 900 miles was August 2018.

I am still waiting for summer weather to arrive. Weather during today’s bike ride: start 80 (87% humidity, 75.7 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind calm. Finish 88 (69% humidity, 76.5 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SW 5 mph. The temperature is appreciated. I switched to wrist bands today in place of the arm sleeves to see if the sweat flowing into my gloves was controlled. The gloves were not as soaked and I could feel the breeze on my skin more.

Effort wise Strava says the ride was consistent with your usual efforts. Watching the power and heart rate numbers on my Elemnt computer I think I rode a little below my usual efforts. Some physical data points:

  • average heart rate: 123 (70%)
  • max heart rate: 146 (83%)
  • average power output: 99 watts
  • max power output: 321 watts

Back in Kingwood I rode easier to the end of the ride finishing at 11:42 AM.

Sunday will be a rest day to set the start of July on Monday.

Bike lanes funded by safety project open at Earl Henderson Park, Near Northside

By Megan Kennedy | www.click2houston.com

HOUSTON – Bikes lanes stretching 9.2 miles opened Thursday at Earl Henderson Park, in the Near Northside.

The segments were completed with a portion of the $10 million Houston Bike Plan, launched by Commissioner Rodney Ellis in 2018.

“For Northside families, these new separated bicycle lanes will open up more opportunities to get safely around the neighborhood without a car,” Ellis said in a news release. “I know that will bring some peace of mind to parents that their kids can travel to school or that they can visit a …

Cycling has exceptional health benefits

www.chron.com

Getting outside and improving your health is easy to do especially when you can go biking throughout the beautiful city of Houston and throughout the parks as well.

Cycling has exceptional health benefits. More specifically, you gain increased muscle strength, flexibility, joint mobility, strengthened bones and improved posture and coordination. Not only is it an aerobic activity, but it’s low impact and has the possibility to fit into your daily routine. Get on the road with the correct bike for your body.

"The ideal bike for beginners is one that fits," said Jon Pursley, General Manager/buyer, Urban Bicycle Gallery. "It should not …

Big Adventures in Big Bend

BY Matt Crossman | www.cowboysindians.com

After a hiking partner’s injury dashed our planned trek through Big Bend National Park, opportunities to see the border region by mountain bike, horseback, zip-line, and small-engine plane more than made up for it.

I can’t say for certain that the coyotes woke me up. But I can say that when I stirred awake in my tent in Big Bend National Park at 4 a.m., the coyotes’ howling chilled me even more than the near-freezing temperatures.

Their plaintive wails matched my mood. I had flown to Dallas and driven 560 miles to Big Bend to go on a hike I had been looking forward to for months. But one of my hiking partners injured his knee, and we had to cancel. That meant I had three days in …

Lower Greenville’s Transit Bicycle Company Was More Than a Bike Shop

By S. Holland Murphy | www.dmagazine.com

The store became a de-facto community center for people who enjoyed cycling. It will close on Saturday, and with that comes a void.

My husband, Brandon, found Transit Bicycle Company as soon as we decided to leave New York and return to Dallas. “I think I just found my new best friend,” he said after his first visit. The generously tattooed and pierced owner, Fran Badgett, was a very good listener. Brandon found every excuse to ride down to the Lower Greenville shop for Lord knows what. Handlebar tape. A bike light. Different colored handlebar tape. I knew well enough that these were things he didn’t really need. I also knew it didn’t take two hours …

Twenty-seven college cyclists from Texas 4000 – the longest annual charity bike ride in the world – recently stopped in New Orleans to visit the Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center at Ochsner Medical Center.

They also presented a $10,000 donation for Ochsner’s patient assistance fund designed to help eligible patients participate in Ochsner’s Precision Cancer Therapies Program (PCTP) – an initiative that allows regional access to the latest in cancer therapeutics, research and advanced diagnostics. PCTP provides an experienced staff including …

Bikes Stolen from San Antonio Cubesmart Storage

Just had two bikes stolen from the CubeSmart storage on Walzem Rd. They were double locked inside a cargo trailer but security is pretty lax at this storage so they had plenty of time to break in.
