About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Digging in the Dirt, Nailing Boards Too Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 28, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2019

More sun during today’s bike ride but the summer heat is holding off for now. The bike ride started at 9:37 AM, a little later than I planned but acceptable. I chose the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route and biked 41.24 miles, boosting the week’s total to 183.33 miles on the way to 200+ for the week. June rolls up to 876.42 miles, 76.42 miles over my goal.

More on the weather during the bike ride: start 82 (82% humidity, 75.7 dew point), partly cloudy with haze, wind NE 5 mph. Finish 91 (66% humidity, 77.7 dew point), partly cloudy, wind W 5 mph. After the May strong winds the last several rides have been in light breezes except for the trek across Lake Houston this week.

As I biked through Woodridge Forest the news home under construction caught my eye and I took these photos.

  • Bike Ride Woodridge Forest-1
  • Bike Ride Woodridge Forest-2

The west side of the development is starting to fill up but a few of the homes show “available” rather than “sold”.

Once I arrived at Tavola on the way to Roman Forest I stopped and took these photos of the intersection beautification.

  • Bike Ride Tavola-1
  • Bike Ride Tavola-2

In the background of the first photo construction crews are building more streets.

Riding through Roman Forest several streets have fresh coats of new asphalt making for smooth biking where there used to be some rough places. On the way back out of Roman Forest I stopped at the Shell station for ice and water.

I decided to stay on Valley Ranch Parkway all the way to FM 1314 and stopped at the Stripes store for another refill of ice and water to carry me to the finish. From there I kept the same pace and held my average speed at 14.4 mph until the 37 mile point as I entered Kingwood. I finished at 12:50 PM.

Strava says today’s bike ride was harder than your usual effort. Some physical data points:

  • average heart rate: 131 bps (75%)
  • max heart rate: 152 bps (87%)
  • average power output: 101 watts
  • max power output: 411 watts

Saturday’s bike ride should be long enough to reach the 200+ miles for the week and the weather looks to repeat today’s.

Some Sun, A Doe and Cyclists Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 27, 2019 by Rick AnkrumJune 29, 2019

With an 8:39 AM start for today’s bike ride I looked forward to biking in the sun rather than dodging rain clouds. I set out on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route biking 33.64 miles. I am getting closer to 200 miles for the with 142.1 miles so far. I am at 835.18 miles for June, over my goal by 35.18 miles. YTD I biked 4,015 miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 79 (98% humidity, 78.4 dew point), overcast, wind NE 4 mph. Finish 85 (85% humidity, 79.6 dew point), mostly cloudy, wind SE 5 mph. The humidity meant sweat flowed freely. I think I will skip the arm sleeves for some rides and use wrist bands instead.

Biking south on Pinehurst Trail Drive another cyclist pulled out ahead of me from a side street probably on the way back from his ride. I followed him into Walden until he turned right and I turned left. At the church on Fairlake Drive two SUV’s parked probably were other cyclists out on the roads.

Not too far south of the church on Fairlake Drive I looked up to see a good size doe deer run across the street and into the brush.

In Huffman I stopped at the Chevron to refill my water bottle and was pleased to see the fountain machine was working again. After a quick refill I was back on the Canyon riding west on FM 1960. Unlike Tuesday when I rode on FM 1960 over Lake Houston today the wind was not a problem.

Staying on Atascocita Shores Drive and then Kings River Drive I arrived at W. Lake Houston Parkway for the ride back into Kingwood. At this point the sun disappeared behind heavy clouds, so much for biking in the sun. As I biked north I started to think of rain but it stayed away as I finished the ride at 11:14 AM, over an hour earlier than I started Wednesday’s ride.

The weather forecast for Friday: High 93 | 72 F, 20% Precip. / 0.00 in., Mostly Sunny. High 93F. Winds light and variable. Looks great for biking.
