About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Memorial Day Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 27, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 27, 2019

Memorial Day was a great day to start early on today’s bike ride, well early for me at 9:30 AM. I chose the “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch” route which covers streets I ride on other routes but in a different order. I biked 33.07 miles. May now totals 727.9 miles. My Canyon Endurace CF SLX now has 10,064 miles on it.

I can remember when I was in grade school back in the 1950’s there would be a parade on Memorial Day. Many military people would march with flags and bands. Today that is a distant memory with no parades and some people not knowing why we have this holiday.

Not too long after I started the ride a house had three flags in the front yard and I stopped to take this photo. Up to when I stopped and got my phone out the flags were blowing in the wind but then the wind stopped.

Bike ride Memorial Day Hunters Ridge

Weather during the bike ride: start 85 (70% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 8 mph. Finish 90 (56% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 12 mph 17 mph gusts. The wind was not too bad compared to previous rides and my rested legs (no bike ride on Sunday) were able to power through. I got my average speed up to 14.0 mph and held it there until I got back into Kingwood and finished the ride at 12:01 PM.

  • average heart rate 128 bps
  • max heart rate 155 bps
  • average power 119 watts
  • max power 429 watts

Tuesday weather forecast is favorable for biking and I plan on adding miles.

Day 26 – Tucumcari, NM to Adrian, TX: New state

Friday May 24, 2019, 63 miles (101 km) – Total so far: 1,174 miles (1,889 km)

Day 27 – Adrian, TX to Amarillo, TX

Saturday May 25, 2019, 46 miles (74 km) – Total so far: 1,220 miles (1,963 km)

50 flat boring miles to Amarillo pretty much sums up the day. Literally, we saw the exact same thing that the vehicles on the interstate saw since the frontage road was pretty much never more than 100 feet from the interstate. …

I’m looking forward to Huston because we’re going to stay at Michael’s, aka “Don Miguel,” and his wife’s home. I met Michael two years ago while hiking the PCT. We hiked together for 100 miles. It was time for me to get off of the PCT and Michael continued …

VCC: Big Dreams & Small Chainrings

Rick Rostkowski | www.strava.com

The dream was 100 miles when Arnel, Clo, Jed, Juan, Mo and I set out at 6:15 this morning. A few miles in we stopped when Clo noticed his handlebars were loose. Thankfully he caught it before the worst could happen and was able to fix it. I felt good and we powered all the way to Richards 44 miles and more than a few hills with some bite to them before our first rest and replenishment of water.

A chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link and soon after the rest it was clear that I was the weak link today. Most likely I …

Second Week In A Row of 200+ miles Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 25, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 25, 2019

Today’s bike ride followed the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route for a total of 33.16 miles. This made the total for the week 220.19 miles, the second week in a row of 200+ miles. May now totals 694.83 miles, 34.83 miles above my goal.

Starting at 11:00 AM after watching stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia I rode flat lands while they rode the mountains. Weather during my bike ride: start 89 (61% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph. Finish 88 (63% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 14 mph 25 mph gusts. Attire: shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves.

At the beginning of the ride the wind wasn’t so bad but as the ride progressed the wind increased. The headwind slowed me down until the turn to the north on FM 2100 from Old Atascocita Road. From there the tailwind helped me on the return to Kingwood and my average speed slowly increased to 13.5 mph. Not as high as I like but what my legs could manage.

I saw another cyclist as I approached FM 1960 on Atascocita Shores Drive. He rode north and I to the south. We exchanged waves.

On the way back home I passed through Kingwood’s Town Center Park where there were a bunch of booths and food trucks. People mingled around.

Sunday will be a rest day and the weather looks great.
