About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

May Mileage Goal Reached Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 24, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 24, 2019

The bike ride began at 11:01 AM as I set out on the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. The plan was to ride far enough to reach my goal for May of 660 miles. Biking 35.84 miles put me over my goal by 1.67 miles. So far this year I exceeded each month’s goal. With 7 more days left in May I have the opportunity to possibly reached 800+ miles for the month.

Weather was windy again but riding to the north for the first 17 miles meant a tailwind most of the time. After riding through Tavola and beginning the return leg the wind became a stiff headwind. Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (70% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 20 mph 24 mph gusts. Finish 89 (65% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph 25 mph gusts. My kit: shorts, short sleeve jersey, arm sleeves, and sunscreen. The weather screenshots at the start and finish of the ride.

  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Start
  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

The 24 and 25 mph gusts sap a lot of leg energy when out in the open. I appreciated the trees and passing traffic blocking the wind for a few seconds or longer.

As I rode through Woodridge Forest these flags caught my eye as they waved in the wind.

I could hear the fabric snapping as the wind pulled at the flags.

Today was the last day of school for New Caney ISD and the four schools I passed were already dismissed when I rode by. Humble ISD doesn’t end until May 31st.

Average speed topped out at 14.2 mph while on the ride south from Tavola. It dropped to 14.0 mph as I entered Kings Manor and settled at 13.7 mph by the 1:49 PM finish.

Saturday weather will repeat today’s and I plan on biking.

Easy As 27 MPH Gusts Allow Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 23, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 23, 2019

After yesterday’s 46+ mile bike ride I chose a shorter route and biked 28.47 miles riding the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route. I rolled off at 10:57 AM and finished at 1:08 PM. May now totals 625.83 miles, 35 miles away from the 660 mile goal.

Weather continues to impact biking with the strong wind. Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (71% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 24 mph gusts 32 mph. Finish 87 (74% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 16 mph gusts 27 mph. Attire for the ride: shorts, short sleeve jersey, arm sleeves, and sunscreen.

  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Start
  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

With the strong wind and tired legs from yesterday this was a bike ride to keep the legs moving. My average speed was low from the effort of riding into a headwind for the first 18 miles. After turning around at E. Lake Houston Parkway the wind was not as much of a problem and my speed increased.

Friday weather looks to repeat and my legs might be rested. Biking looks favorable.
