About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

27 mph Gusts Headwind, Overcast, 200+ Mile Week Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 18, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 18, 2019

The wind is back! I chose the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route which goes south and to the east into a stiff headwind until the turn around point. Wheels rolled at 10:44 AM after I watched stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia. They didn’t have wind but some damp roads in places. That may happen here later in the day.

My goal was to bike enough miles to go over 200 miles. I needed 18 miles and rode 32.56 miles putting the week total at 214.83 miles and May up to 474.65 miles, 72% of my goal. After all the rain last week the weather cooperated so I rode 6 days in a row to get these miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 83 (79% humidity), overcast, wind S 18 mph 27 mph gusts. Finish 82 (80% humidity), overcast, wind S 15 mph 22 mph gusts. I wore shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. The wind made it feel cooler than I would expect for the temperature. The weather at the airport at the start and finish.

  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Start
  • Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

I thought I might see at least one other cyclist but none crossed my route.

Some physical data:

  • average heart rate 120 bps
  • max heart rate 146 bps
  • average power 147 watts
  • max power 463 watts

Checking my tire mileage on the Canyon:

  • front tire 7,356 miles
  • rear tire 7,826 miles
  • Both tires are Continental GatorSkin 700×28

The tires look like they have more miles in them. One problem I have with them is the threads unraveling along the bead. I see other people have this too.

I finished the ride at 1:17 PM with a few sprinkles.

Sunday will be a rest day to prepare for next week.

Video: Ride of Silence reminds drivers to ‘share the road’

Video: How a man turned his ‘Bike to Work Day’ ride into a 22-mile commute

by: Candy Rodriguez | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Thousands of people are expected to ditch their cars, grab their helmets and jump on their bikes Friday for the annual Bike to Work Day.

The initiative started with a couple dozen riders in Austin nine years ago and has ballooned to a nationwide event with about 3,000 bikers participating last year.

In 2016, Matt Maupin was inspired by the event and decided he would try it. Maupin lives in Cedar Park and works in downtown …

MSU Texas grad student wins national cycling title in runaway

news.mwsu.edu

Zach Gregg had a college career as an accomplished lacrosse player at Colorado Mesa where he earned a bachelor’s degree.

But he decided he needed more — more education and more competition. The fire for both still burned inside and Midwestern State University had exactly what the 26-year-old needed, offering a chance to compete in cycling and pursue his master’s degree in exercise physiology.

It’s safe to call that a winning decision. Gregg recently earned a championship at the 2019 USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals in the time trials event at Augusta, Georgia. The victory wasn’t a surprise to Gregg or MSU Texas Cycling Coach Charlie Zamastil.

“Zach had a great year,” Zamastil said. “He hasn’t lost a time trial all season. He’s been a machine.”

Both athlete and coach tried to be outwardly cautious though they were inwardly optimistic going to nationals. Gregg won a conference championship in his first season with MSU Cycling. But then the prep for nationals was slowed by a knee injury.

However, nothing slowed him in Augusta when it came to his signature event, …

Getting Good Position For 200+ Miles Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 17, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 17, 2019

Friday rolled around quickly this week it seemed. Good biking weather hung around too. To position me to reach 200+ miles for the week I chose the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route and biked 36.33 miles bumping the week’s total to 182.27 and May to 442.08 miles. I started biking at 10:40 am. Stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia ended a little early allowing me to start sooner than I expected.

Speaking of the weather the clouds increased some as the wind from the gulf brought some moisture. What I faced while biking: Start 85 (72% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. Finish 86 (70% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 15 mph. My clothing choice: shorts, sunscreen, arm sleeves, and a short sleeve jersey. Weather at the end of the ride.

Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

The 15 mph wind didn’t pose a problem on the way north but riding south when I was out in the open the legs were taxed heavily. In spite of the headwind I managed to improve my overall average speed to 14.2 mph and held it there until I was at the 31 mile point.

When I arrived at the Grand Parkway on Valley Ranch Parkway these pretty flowers and the fountains in the background caught my eye.

One of the hard parts of the ride came just south of the Grand Parkway where an incline into the wind required me to get out of the saddle to get up to the top.

Near the end of the ride in South Woodland Hills another cyclist approached and I waved but he didn’t respond even though we passed just a few feet from each other. I went on to finish the ride at 1:31 pm.

My plan is to bike tomorrow (Saturday) to put the week over 200 miles. The weather looks good until late afternoon or evening when rain might arrive.

By Ryan Autullo | www.statesman.com

Gregg Charalambous is looking forward to Bike To Work Day, when more than 3,000 people in Austin are expected to leave their motor vehicles at home Friday and pedal to their workplaces.

The annual event is “more meaningful than riding a bike. It’s a movement,” he said.
