About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Arm Sleeve Aerodynamics? Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 16, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 16, 2019

After watching the finish of today’s Giro d’Italia stage I got ready and headed out to ride my bike. I chose the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route and rode 28.88 miles. I have an afternoon commitment which required me to keep the ride shorter than normal. So far this week I biked 145.94 miles and 405.75 miles for May.

Weather for today’s ride was great with some clouds: start 83 (69% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 5 mph. Finish 85 (57% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. Attire for today: shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. I jokingly told my wife I think the arm sleeves improved my aerodynamics enabling me to improve my average speed by .2 mph.

Nothing out of the ordinary along the route except the trees were removed from the greenbelt sidewalk on Kingwood Drive. I saw a couple of casual bikers in Kingwood before I headed south. My legs felt good today allowing me to get my overall average speed up to 14.5 mph on the way back to Kingwood. Once I was back in Kingwood the starts and stops lowered it to 14.2 mph.

Some physical data:

  • average heart rate 127
  • max heart rate 147
  • average power 140 watts
  • max power 454 watts

Friday weather looks favorable for biking with more clouds.

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — Bike prices could be rising by up to $500, leaving the bike industry to deal with what’s to come.

This is a result of the tariff on Chinese imports going up 25 percent.

Whether you’re here in El Paso, or somewhere else in the states, there are no bikes made in the United States. That’s all happening in China.

Bike shops have known big changes could affect business for a while now, but it’s still an adjustment. …

For the 14th year area cyclists gather to ride, mourn and raise awareness

Jeremy K. Jones | www.newswest9.com

Pro Cyclist Lawson Craddock Tells His Strain and Recovery Story

By Lawson Craddock | thriveglobal.com

I was born on February 20th, 1992. I’d say my cycling life started February 21st, 1992.

I’ve been around bikes my whole life. My dad raced professional downhill way back in the day, before it was even a real thing. He was always riding recreationally when my brother and I were kids. I entered my first race when I was four years old, a local pee-wee mountain bike event.

When I was 10, I started racing competitively out at the Alkek Velodrome in Houston, TX. I raced there pretty much my entire junior career. Every year I got more and more into it. I raced …

Yellow Wildflowers and Some Clouds Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 15, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 15, 2019

Another nice day for a bike ride with some clouds. I chose the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and wheels started rolling at 10:42 AM, a little earlier than usual due to an afternoon appointment. Biking 34.33 miles improved May total to 376.87 miles, 57% of my 660 mile goal.

Weather during the bike ride: start 81 (63% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. Finish 86 (54% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. Wind was not much of issue and my average speed reflected that. I built it up to 14.5 mph and held it there until I rode almost back to Kingwood Drive. I wore a warm weather kit: shorts, short sleeve jersey, and arm sleeves. Weather at the finish.

Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

On the way back to Kingwood I stopped in Valley Ranch and took these photos of the wildflowers.

Plenty of blue sky but clouds arrived. Today’s stage of Giro d’Italia wasn’t as fortunate with heavy rain and cold. They shortened the time line but not the kilometers.

While I rode through Oakhurst on one street several houses must have had water damage from the recent rains. They had dumpster bins in the driveways and workers removing stuff.

Good biking weather continues on Thursday.

Study Says Painted Bike Lanes Aren’t Enough; Two Close Calls in Two Days Confirm It

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

The study, done by Monash University of cyclists in Victoria, Australia, found that painted bike lanes do not deter car drivers from coming too close to bicycles. And people ride their bikes less when they do not feel safe. The answer is clear: bike lanes must be protected in order to create true safety for bike riders.
