About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Kingwood Streets in the Rain Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 7, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 7, 2019

Today’s bike ride got rained out. I started out at 10:20 AM planning on riding to Huffman but by the time I reached 6 miles the rain started. To add to the drama in my race to find shelter several places on the sidewalk along Kingwood Drive still had trees down and I had to detour around them. I rode to Town Center and found a pass through hallway that I used before to get out of the rain.

At the intersection of Woods Estate Drive and Valley Manor Drive two women were standing and talking with two large black dogs. As I approached the intersection the two dogs ran to me barking and growling. I yelled at them and the women called the dogs who ran back to the women. I turned back and yelled at the women that the dogs should be on leashes and one of them hooked the dogs on leashes. Dog owners have no idea how their dog will react to a biker.

After waiting about 30 minutes the rain let up and I rode south to the library thinking I might continue the ride. Looking towards Huffman the sky was dark and thunder was coming from that direction. So I decided biking wasn’t going to happen today and turned back.

As I passed the Houston Police Substation on Rustic Woods Drive I spotted this vehicle.

Bike Ride HPD High Water Rescue

Above the truck the sky is dark and the rain was waiting for me. About 3/4 of mile from home the rain started coming down hard soaking me by the time I pulled in the driveway and got under the breezeway at 11:54 AM.

This may be the weather until Saturday but I will try to ride if the weather allows.

April 2019 Protected bike lane on Hardy Street

Yea! In response to the Build 50 Challenge (B-50C), Houston is building more high comfort bike lanes (bikeways). As a result, this means new designs and infrastructure. What does this mean? How will bike lanes impact motor-vehicle drivers, people on bikes, and public safety? Let’s take a moment to look at one of our newest bike lanes and talk about its use. …

What Is Going On With I-45?

May is Bike Month, and it is starting off hot.

BikeHouston, I-45 Coalition and the NHHIP (North Houston Highway Improvement Project).

BikeHouston and the I-45 Coalition are spreading the word that TxDOT needs to reconsider the $10 billion North Houston Highway Improvement Project. The Coalition held a special event at Saint Arnold Brewing Company on April 30, 2019 to raise funds for noise and social impact studies to show TxDOT that the North Houston Highway Improvement Project as proposed is not what we want. Highways do not make a city great. They divide neighborhoods, disrupt our lives during …

Mayor Turner’s Response to our Dangerous Streets

Too often families have lost loved ones in crashes on our urban and suburban streets. In 2018, 73 people walking or riding a bike were killed and 251 were seriously injured on Houston’s streets. This is unacceptable. We need to ensure every person gets to their destination safely whether walking, driving, rolling, or riding a bike. BikeHouston asked the City of Houston to: …

New Bike Jersey, Red Roses Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 6, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 6, 2019

Opening this week’s riding I chose the “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route and rode 44.28 miles. I started the ride at 10:43 AM with excellent biking weather: start 82 (68% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind 6 mph. Finish 84 (60% humidity), overcast, wind SE 14 mph.

I wore a new Bellwether Distance jersey atop my Bellwether shorts.

With the light wind I was able to ride at a good pace and kept improving my average speed to 14.8 mph before it dropped when I got back to Kingwood.

While riding through Tavola I stopped and took these photos.

The Knockout Roses’ brilliant red caught my eye.

Once I reached Splendora the ride back to the south was into a headwind but my legs had the power to keep my average speed up and increase it.

For a slight variation on this route I rode through Forest Colony from Valley Ranch Parkway back to the I-69/US59 south frontage road. My usual route is Azalea Blvd. but the road can be covered in mud from the trucks hauling dirt from a big excavation beside the road. They use water to keep the dust down.

I finished the ride at 2:00 PM in time to beat the school traffic. I still saw some debris from Friday’s rain and wind storm.

Tuesday’s weather forecast shows a 50% chance of rain but maybe a bike ride can be fit in before the rain arrives.

I rolled out of Van Horn early in the morning on highway 90 to Marfa. It was a long straight road with not much in between. Around mile 32 there is town of Valentine. Unfortunately for me, there wasn’t a place to get a cold drink or snack. However, there was a really nice building just as you entering Valentine. First to celebrate mass at St. Mary’s in Marfa. It was a short ride to Alpine. I decided to stay in motel to catch up laundry and rest my body a little more. Just as I arrived to the motel, I got a weather alert of sever thunder storms in the area. Just about that time there was a nice bitt of rain falling. …
