About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lessons from the Road

Lisa Doggett | www.lisadoggett.com

The MS150 pushed me to my limits, connected me with other MS Warriors and supporters, and brought intense highs and lows. I’m so glad it’s over. And I’m so sorry it’s over. Here are some lessons from my weekend adventure, biking over 160 miles from Houston to Austin:

Pickle juice is really a thing. It is packaged and sold. It is a favorite drink along the MS150, available at every break point. It’s …

Long Beach, CA to St. Augustine, FL via the southern tier

By Tony Olague | www.crazyguyonabike.com

El Paso to Ft. Hancock TX Thursday May 2, 2019, 52 miles (84 km) – Total so far: 491 miles (790 km) After a week of recovering from whatever I had I started my ride in El Paso. It was a slight down hill from El Paso and then it was flat all the way to Ft. Hancock. There were only a few clouds in the sky. Even though it wasn’t to hot and there was a slight breeze, the sun baked down on me. I had lunch in Fabens in a hole in the wall restaurant called Lety’s. There ten tables that didn’t match with white folding chairs. Lety’s was filled with …

Fast Moving Rain But Wind Remains Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 2, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 2, 2019

After waking up this morning I checked the weather on my phone and was surprised to see a line of storms approaching. I wondered if this would stop me from biking today but as the line of rain passed quickly not much rain fell. By the time I started today’s bike ride at 11:33 AM the streets were dry and I had to look closely to see evidence that it even rained.

Selecting the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route to ride I decided to tweak some streets for variety and ended up riding 33.98 miles.

The quick moving front didn’t take the strong wind with it though. Weather during the bike ride: start 82 (67% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 18 mph. Finish 85 (65% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 21 mph gusts 29 mph. While the front was moving through the temperature dropped into the mid 60’s but as soon as the sun came out it began warming up. That was I needed to wear a summer kit: shorts and a short sleeve jersey. The wind at the finish of the ride at 2:11 PM was very strong.

Bike Ride Airport Weather Finish

During the ride I hit 582 watts as my max power. I glanced at the Elemnt computer screen a few times and saw watts in the 400 range when I rode into the wind. Once as I rode west on FM 1960 just west of FM 2100 in front of the Chevron a strong gust caught the Canyon Endurace CF SLX and pushed me to the right sharply but I maintained control. Any time the wind wants to leave I am ready.

Maybe the wind will die down some on Friday when the high for the day could be in the upper 70’s. There is a 50% chance of rain but that probably won’t be until the evening so I should be riding.

Houston Powers Ahead on Bike Lanes

EMILY NONKO | nextcity.org

Last April the nonprofit BikeHouston issued its city a challenge: Build fifty miles of high-comfort, on-street bikeways and off-street trails over the next 12 months. Not long ago that goal would have seemed unattainable in a city that hadn’t updated its bike plan or infrastructure standards since the 1990s. But tides were changing; everyone from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to the Federal Highway Administration felt it was time to integrate more bikes and safer lanes into the historically car-centric city. …

New bike lanes to be approved on Hickory Street

by Michelle Nguyen | www.ntdaily.com

The Denton City Council favored an option to remove parking from West Hickory Street to create space for a new bike lane during a recent work session. The bike lane is a part of the Oak Gateway Area Plan, which will develop new traffic plans to accommodate Denton’s growing population. The affected area includes Fry Street businesses.

The city of Denton approved a bicycle and pedestrian master plan in 2012 that called for a contiguous bike lane along Hickory Street from Bonnie Brae to Carroll.

"Ms 150" update

txags92 | www.bikeforums.net

First of all, thanks to all of you for riding and raising funds to beat MS! I was diagnosed with MS in 2006, so thank you for riding from all of us with MS.

We started at our house, which is about 94 miles from LaGrange. Joined the route at Clay and Barker Cypress. Day 1 sucked…3 flats…2 of them were slow leaks that took a while for me to realize that it shouldn’t be that hard to ride. We rode very well, and averaged in the high 17s to Bellville, feeling good at lunch. After Nelsonville on Day 1, the heat and my MS combined to make it a real challenge for me, but I managed to finish in a very unexciting 9 hours. When the temp gets above about 78-80, it is like somebody flips a switch and fatigue just starts building in my legs. As long as I stop to cool down periodically, I can keep going, but I just can’t do 15-20 mile stretches without …

Up Hill Into a Strong Headwind Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 1, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMay 1, 2019

Up hill into a strong headwind! What a way to start May bike rides. The ride started at 11:02 AM as I set out to ride the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route. Getting May off to a good start I rode 36.16 miles toward my 660 mile goal for May. Before the ride sitting at the breakfast table with my wife I put on my shoes and got ready to leave. I said to my wife, “Let me check the weather to see if it is windy outside”. Looking at the NWAA app on my phone I wasn’t shocked when I saw it was indeed very windy. Wind was from the S at 20 mph with 29 mph gusts. Fortunately the first 17 miles of the ride was to the north so I enjoyed a tailwind most of the way to Tavola.

Weather during the bike ride: Start 85 (71% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 20 mph gusts 29 mph. Finish 86 (69% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 16 mph gusts 27 mph. My attire was shorts, short sleeve jersey with sunscreen. I am finally starting to thaw out now that the temperature is in the 80’s.

Leaving Tavola on Roman Forest Blvd. I knew the headwind was waiting for me on the trip back to Kingwood. Once I truned onto the I-69/US59 south bound frontage road the wind whipped around but held back some by the tall trees on the east side of the highway. At the FM 1485 traffic light the trees are gone and from that point on the wind was stiff. Glancing down at the Elemnt computer I saw my watts jumping to 470 and on the chart it goes to 655 as my max. I held my average speed at 14.3 mph as I rode into the wind some how. That uphill headwind happened on Valley Ranch Parkway as I rode south of the Grand Parkway. The hill isn’t steep but the headwind made it seem like it was.

After the hill the road flattens out but when I turned left onto Azalea Blvd. to go back to the frontage road I got another blast of wind all the way and my legs struggled to get power to the pedals. On the frontage road riding south the wind let up some because of the change in direction and entering Auburn Trail I was back among trees and houses.

From there to Kings Manor I had a tailwind or a headwind depending on which direction I rode. I kept my average speed at 14.3 mph until the 31 mile point when the residential streets and stop signs took their toll. I finished the ride at 1:43 PM which avoided any school traffic.

Thursday’s weather looks like more of the same and I will be on the bike.
