About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Registration table. Well organized and friendly volunteers. I think the photographer was telling the clouds to go away.

Clouds looked threatening in several directions but I did not recall rain in the forecast. Just wind. The forecast was correct.

Bonnie and Clyde ride

Local Hub Bicycle Co | www.ridespot.org

Dallas, Texas , United States Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are both buried in Dallas and only a couple miles apart from each other. The ride starts at Local Hub and heads towards Bonnie’s final resting place, Crown Hill Cemetery. Bonnie’s mother is also buried here, but only Bonnie has a marker. Next stop is Star Filling Station and Barrow Residence on the corner of Borger and Singleton. Clyde is buried a short distance away at Western Heights Cemetery. The cemetery has no trespassing signs posted and is rarely open to the public. Clyde’s grave is located on the West side close to the street. The ride continues back through downtown until you get to Hargroves Cafe located at 3308 Swiss Circle. Bonnie supposedly worked here January 1928-Spring 1929.

Looking for something fun to do today. How about a self guided Bonnie and Clyde history bicycle ride. Rent some bikes and see Dallas history. https://t.co/mJ2urqny2a

April in Dallas

by Matt | cyclesinlife.com

I think I’ve decided April in Dallas is my favorite month here. The weather is so good most days I stop and comment on it. There is a pretty bad storm once a week or so but other than that April is pretty rad. I’ve spent more time on my road bike than a mountain bike out of convenience. It’s easier to fit close road rides in with my work schedule and there have been a few days where the trails were wet. The amazing crew at DORBA do an astonishly good job at keeping the …

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, tucked away near Memorial Park on 4501 Woodway Dr., has unveiled a newly designed ravine trail as part of the nonprofit’s Master Plan. The public can traverse this new trail, which boasts …

Windy, 200+ Miles Week Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 27, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 27, 2019

The blue sky gave way to partly cloudy but the wind still hung around giving me a rough time getting to Ramsey Road while I biked the “Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman” route. At the beginning of the ride I went to Walmart to drop off some prescription drugs for Drug Take Back day. This added about a mile to the 38.07 miles of the whole ride. This put the week’s total at 213.37 miles and April at 748.21 miles. This is the first 200+ mile week since March 25th.

I got an earlier start than usual leaving home at 10:31 AM. Weather was perfect: start 82 (54% humidity), a few clouds, wind S 10 mph. Finish 83 (53% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 12 mph gusts 21 mph. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey, and a short sleeve jersey. I almost didn’t wear the long sleeve jersey but changed my mind because of the wind and not wanting to rub sunscreen on my arms. The weather screenshot at the end of the ride.

The 21 mph gusts were tough when I rode east over Lake Houston and on Old Atascocita Road east of FM 2100 where there wasn’t anything to slow it down. At Ramsey Road I knew how strong the wind was when I turned left and rode to the first small bridge. The tailwind felt good and my pedaling effort dropped significantly. Making the turn around to ride west on Old Atascocita Road the wind now helped me and my speed went up to 16 to 17 mph and my effort wasn’t as high. This lasted until I got to Huffman and FM 1960. Biking on FM 1960 west the wind was from my left and until I reached Lake Houston it wasn’t too bad but over the lake gusts came trying to push me to the concrete guardrail numerous times. Once I made it to the west side the trees blocked some wind but I altered the route at this point going through Walden looping back to FM 1960 on Pinehurst Trail. Now the tailwind pushed me to the north back to Kingwood. I stopped at the same benches as yesterday for about 5 minutes and then resumed the ride and finishing at 1:39 PM.

With the miles today and passing 200+ for the week I will take a rest day on Sunday.

Houston’s booming bike-share system is reshaping a car-centric city

BY EILLIE ANZILOTTI | www.fastcompany.com

As Houston BCycle rapidly expands, the biggest jump in ridership has come from people swapping out car trips in favor of a bike–in a city where less than 7% of people walk, bike, or take transit to work.

For a bike-share system, annual ridership growth of around 10% is good. That’s what Motivate, the largest bike-share provider in the U.S., touted as its across-the-board growth metric for its seven systems in 2017. …

Pickup-bicycle collision on UT road raises broad liability issues

By Ralph K.M. Haurwitz | www.statesman.com

If you ride a bicycle, walk a dog or otherwise engage in recreation on University of Texas property, are you necessarily trespassing?

The university is arguing that the answer is yes in a case pending before the Texas Supreme Court. Two lower courts have disagreed.

The seeds of the dispute were planted four years ago this month, when April Garner, a graduate of UT and 57 years old at the time, was riding her bicycle from her Tarrytown home to meet a friend at the Butler Hike and Bike Trail. …
