About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

After A Day’s Rest 27 MPH Gusts Not So Bad Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 22, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 22, 2019

Well the wind is back on today’s bike ride. When I say wind I mean 20 mph with 27 mph gusts. That’s what happened on today’s bike ride as I rode on the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route to the north. Starting out at 11:38 AM I checked the NWAA app on my phone and saw what was waiting for me. Fortunately this route is to the north and the wind was from the SE so the first half of the ride was with a tailwind most of the time

  • Weather at Bike Ride Start
  • Weather at Bike Ride Finish

I chose today’s route to get at least 40 miles to hep get closer to my 600 mile goal for April. I actually biked 41.18 miles. This put the total for April at 576.01 miles, 24 miles short of the goal. Other distance of note: my Canyon Endurace CF SLX has 9125 miles and YTD miles total 2061 now.

Besides the wind the weather was nice: start 78 (61% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 12 mph gusts 22 mph. Finish 79 (60% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 20 mph gusts 27 mph. I dressed lighter with shorts, long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey over it. The long sleeves were for sun protection and wind chill.

While I the way back home I stopped at the New Caney ISD Stadium and took these photos to show the wind.

Surprisingly I was able to maintain food speed during the ride and built my average speed up to 14.6 mph and hold it on the way back to Kingwood. I kept it there until mile 39 when it dropped to 14.5 mph and finished up the ride with 14.3 mph at 2:39 PM.

Tuesday weather forecast looks like a repeat of today with maybe not so strong of wind. Bike ride looks favorable.

Chevron to honor Anadarko’s current philanthropic commitments

Anadarko Petroleum Corp. volunteer Tim Gregory gives a bike helmet to first-grader Micah Fleetwood at DeZavala Elementary on Oct. 26. Anadarko built bikes for the DeZavala students.

Chevron officials told the Reporter-Telegram this week that their company and Anadarko share strong desire to contribute to our communities through philanthropy and employee volunteers, and there’s no reason that will change.

Last week, Chevron agreed to acquire Anadarko Petroleum for $33 billion. Chevron emailed a statement that states it will …

Easter egg hunters start pedaling, start hunting

By Marshall Reid | www.dentonrc.com

Denton adults need not yearn for the Easter egg hunts of days gone by.

For the fifth year, Oak Street Drafthouse & Cocktail Parlor hosted its Easter Egg Bike Hunt on Sunday afternoon.

Even those without their own bikes weren’t left out of the fun. Through a partnership with VeoRide, an additional 25 bikes were available for free check-out Sunday afternoon. The bike-share program first hit the University of North Texas campus in August, and …

Bike riders of all levels encouraged to pedal to work May 7

KATHARINE SHILCUTT | news.rice.edu

May is National Bike Month and Rice is kicking it off with a trio of events May 7 designed to encourage greater ridership within the Rice community — even if you’ve never ridden a bike in your life.

“Increasing the number of bike riders coming to campus creates more awareness and demand for high-comfort bike lanes around Rice, and it helps improve air quality and reduces emissions,” said Lisa Lin, program manager for Rice’s Transportation Demand Management Department. “It also …

Wind Disappears Overnight, Blue Sky and Fellow Cyclists Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 20, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 20, 2019

The wind disappeared during the night so when I started today’s bike ride at 11:22 AM I liked the prospect of not fighting it. I chose the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route which covers some of the same roads as yesterday’s ride. I modified the sequence of streets today for some variety from around the 9 mile point to FM 1960 where the streets got back to normal.

Weather during the bike ride: start 72 (35% humidity), fair, wind 4 mph. Finish 78 (35% humidity), fair, wind S 5 mph. Notice the wind is 5 mph or less compared to yesterday’s 32 mph gusts. Lots of sun and I dressed accordingly with shorts, long sleeve heavy jersey, and a wind jacket. This kept me comfortable the whole ride.

With such great weather I stopped twice on Old Atascocita Road to take these photos. The first two are at Fairlake Drive and the second pair were east of FM 2100 at the Gum Gully signs.

You can see the bright blue sky in each photo but the wind is not present.

With my late start I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists but four of them crossed my path. Maybe they were out enjoying the departure of the wind.

At the Town Center Park in Kingwood a number of food trucks gathered while booths and people moved around checking out the vendors.

I finished the ride at 2:41 PM.

Sunday is Easter so I will not ride. Back on the bike on Monday.
