About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

28 MPH Gusts and Lots Of Wildflowers Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 8, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 8, 2019

It has been a while since I rode the “Kingwood – Splendora – Kingwood” route. The last time was June 22, 2018. I waited for the temperature to go up some and finally set out at 11:55 AM. I chose this route to ride close to 40 miles and ended up biking 44.21 miles because I added a loop through Tavola and rode on Railroad Ave. starting at 19.3 miles, south of Splendora.

As I got ready to leave I checked the NWAA app for the local weather and got a foretaste of what it was going to be like biking to Splendora. Wind was from the NW at 13 mph with 22 mph gusts. Since the temperature at the start barely crossed into the 70’s I chose a long sleeve thermal jersey topped with a short sleeve jersey, and bike shorts. The sun broke through the mostly cloudy sky sometimes but my choice of clothing wasn’t too hot as the ride progressed. At the 3:19 PM finish the wind was stronger at 15 mph from the NW and 28 mph gusts which helped me on the ride back from Splendora.

Yesterday (Sunday) a strong rain storm moved through the area keeping me inside off the bike and without electricity for several hours. It didn’t hurt the wildflowers along the route today. I took these photos south of Creekwood Drive.

Surviving the wind I made the turn around at FM 2090 in Splendora moving to the I-69/US59 south bound frontage road. I didn’t too far and stopped to take these photos of more wildflowers.

The ride south back to Kingwood was easier but there were places where I hit the headwind like Valley Ranch Parkway. I improved my average speed once I rode to the south to 14.3 mph and held it there until the 40 mile point as I entered Kings Manor and then into Kingwood where it dropped down 14.1 mph by the finish.

More great weather on Tuesday but maybe not so windy. I will turning the pedals.

Video: Gettin’ Rowdy in Texas Hill Country with Jeff Kendall-Weed

by Jeff Kendall-Weed | www.pinkbike.com

Like many of us in this mountain bike community, I grew up with an addiction. Quarter pipes, campouts in the woods, and lots of Misfits, I was about one stair gap short of needing a full-on intervention to save me from that BMX addiction.

In early 2000s BMX culture, the Texas capitol of Austin was a staple in the print and video media that defined our little rag-tag sport. Home to famous 20” brands such as Terrible One, Mutiny, and Empire BMX, the city had what appeared to be an …

A car driver struck and killed 28 year old Jessica on Thursday 3/28/19 while she was traveling by bicycle along E. Martin Luther King Drive (District 9; City Council Representative Kathie Tovo).

Jessica was traveling adjacent to the UFCU Disch-Falk Field which is the stadium that is home to the University of Texas Longhorns baseball team. Jessica was most likely attempting avoid the danger of riding a bicycle on MLK by turning into drive that circles behind the stadium and opens back up to Comal. There is an incline just east of the drive which likely prevented the driver from seeing Jessica and prevented …

Doe in the Burbs Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 6, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 6, 2019

The sky was threatening most of the morning and it rained for a minute or so. But by the time I decided to go biking I checked the weather radar and no rain was in the area. So I set out on the “Atascocita – Huffman – Walden” route at 12:09 PM. This changes the route I ride most often by reversing the middle streets. I biked 32.98 miles improving April’s total to 156.04 miles and keeping me slightly ahead of the rate of 20 miles per day to reach my 600 mile goal.

My wife warned me about rain but it never fell on my ride today. Weather during the bike ride: start 73 (94% humidity), overcast, wind SE 9 mph. Finish 78 (81% humidity), overcast with haze, wind SE 12 mph. I overdressed based on the temperature and not taking the humidity into account. I wore shorts, a heavy long sleeve jersey, and a wind breaker jacket. After passing the half way point the sky brighten some as the sun overcame some of the cloud cover. This in turn heated me up making for a warm ride. I should’ve wore a light long sleeve jersey.

On Old Atascocita Road just west of the railroad tracks where the City of Houston ground off some asphalt earlier in the week today I was greeted with nice smooth new asphalt. Glad to see that solved.

On the way back home on Pinehurst Trail Drive at the Texas Laurel Trail intersection a large doe raced across the street from the yard on the right into the wood on the left. The two cars at the stop sign might have been surprised.

The 12 mph wind took a toll on my legs getting to FM 2100 but once on that road the wind generally was a tailwind until I was back on the west side of Lake Houston and riding into Walden. As I made my way back to FM 1960 the wind became a tailwind again and stayed there most of the way to the finish. Finishing at 2:45 PM the sun broke through the clouds some more making me glad to get out of the soak jersey and jacket.

Sunday weather is iffy which makes biking iffy too. I will make a riding decision after getting home from church.
