About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

23 MPH Wind, 30 MPH Gusts Creates Jello Legs Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 3, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 3, 2019

Weather was a big deal during today’s bike ride. I started the ride at 12:30 PM, a delayed time while I hoped the temperature would get closer to the forecasted high of 71. But it didn’t look promising so I bundled up and took the “New Caney – Roman Forest – Valley Ranch” route to the north. I biked 41.47 miles which was my goal for the day.

Bundling up consisted of shorts, a thermal long sleeve jersey, short sleeve jersey, leg warmers, wind jacket, and full finger gloves. I debated about the gloves but with no sun over ruled regular gloves because I don’t like cold fingers. As it turned out I probably overdressed because at the 3:43 PM finish the jacket sleeves were wet and the jerseys soaked when I took them off. Weather during the bike ride: start 67 (67% humidity), overcast, wind SE 8 mph. Finish 71 (67% humidity), overcast and breezy, wind SE 23 mph gusts 30 mph.

Not sure when the wind became so strong because I didn’t notice it on the ride north to Roman Forest and the tailwind helped. Riding into Tavola riding to the east I got the first taste of the strong wind. Among the trees in Roman Forest the wind got buffered and I enjoyed the wind helping me get back to I-69/US59 on Roman Forest Blvd. At the turn to the south on I-69/US59 service road the headwind took its toll. I thought my legs were tired from the ride yesterday but when I got home I saw how strong the wind was. That explains around 6 miles left on the ride my legs turned to jello and speed dropped to 13 mph or less. Struggling to ride through Kingwood the speed dropped more. Once I finished the ride my legs complained as I walked inside the house. Sitting as I write this they are recovering.

Thursday weather forecast calls for rain. If that turns out to be false I have a small window to go for a 22 miles ride.

Pool: Hosting heroes of the open road

By Frank T. Pool | www.news-journal.com

When my wife and I started to travel together on the highways of the American West, we occasionally encountered cyclists. On mountain passes, in deserts, miles from any town, people pedaled their bicycles, often heavily laden with tents, sleeping bags and other camping gear.

We called them heroes. There is something grand and bold about striking out across a continent on a bicycle.

A few years ago we hosted a wonderful couple on their journey from the …

1,213 Miles: First Quarterly Report of 2019

A DUDE ABIKES | adudeabikes.com

This is a summary of my bicycle riding statistics on the Strava app for January through March. It shows my total miles biked so far for 2019 is 1,213. At 13.47 miles per day over the first 90 days, that isn’t bad. It’s only slightly off the pace of 13.75, which will put me at 5,000 for the year — IF I’m able to keep it up. That’s always the question. By the way, virtually all of these miles are being done on Sophie, the Fairdale Weekender Archer. …

Winter Won’t Give Up Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 2, 2019 by Rick AnkrumApril 2, 2019

With winter happening (by my definition) Sunday and Monday today it warmed up for me to go biking. Missing the first day of April I decided on the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route to make up for it biking 42.45 miles. I started biking at 12:41 PM hoping for some more warmth. This keeps me on track to reach the 600 mile goal for April at 20 miles per day.

Weather during the bike ride: start 69 (38% humidity), partly cloudy, wind 4 mph. Finish 69 (32% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind E 6 mph. I debated about wearing leg warmers and decided to wear them because of the wind chill, glad I did. In addition to those I wore a long sleeve thermal jersey, shorts, and a wind breaker jacket. The forecast called for 72 degrees but I don’t think it got there. Whenever I rode in the shade the wind had a chill to it making my choice of attire correct.

The wind seemed to switch directions whenever I did except when I rode south on Ramsey Road.

With the coolness no need for rest stops except for traffic lights and stop signs.

Average speed slowly built up to 14.2 mph which I held until the 40.2 mile point back in Kingwood.

No special sightings along the route. On Old Atascocita Road the road surface on both approaches to the new bridge near Fairlake Drive has the top layer of asphalt removed and is very rough. As I rode through that to the railroad tracks a freight train went through. There is an incline to the tracks and I got off the Canyon and walked closer to the tracks so when the train finished I could start pedaling easier.

Back in Kingwood I avoided the school traffic and finished the ride at 337 PM.

Wednesday it will be slightly warmer and cloudier according to the forecast. I plan on riding.
