About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Day 31: Marathon-Marfa-VanHorn-El Paso, TX. Saturday March 30, 2019, 15 miles (24 km) – Total so far: 1,752 miles (2,820 km) Wind, the bane of any cyclist’s existence. We knew it was coming, we thought we could beat it, but alas, it chewed us up in Marathon and spit us out in El Paso! We left in the dark and with each mile we began to question our safety as the gusts over 35 m.ph. pushed us into the danger zone. Not much traffic in these parts, but our best hope to move forward was to flag down a truck to get us to Alpine, the biggest town we’ll have seen in a week. Along comes a cowboy, named Howdy with a …

Kemper, Martin

www.wacotrib.com

Martin KemperFeb 11, 1949 – Mar 28, 2019 Martin French Kemper beheld the face of his King and Savior at 5:30 p.m., March 28, 2019. He passed peacefully through the veil into the arms of Jesus after fighting a valiant battle with ALS. Martin was born in Abilene, Texas, on February 11, 1949, to Roy F. Kemper and Verla Joyce Perkins Kemper. His family moved to Coleman, Texas in 1954 where his father practiced medicine for many years. As Martin said in his final days, when he was about 13 years old, he "decided to follow Christ, walked the isle, became a Christian and never looked back!" …

… For years Martin was an avid mountain biker and outdoorsman. He spent many hours on the trails in Cameron Park in Waco and constructed many of the hike and bike trails in Woodway Park. He was so passionate about the Woodway trails that he served on the Parks Board and was honored in 2017 for his service. He was a member of the Waco Bike Club, supporting many activities, hosting parties at his home, and …

Two Retired Amigos on Winter Tour

Day 35: Sanderson to Marathon Saturday March 30, 2019, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,756 miles (2,826 km) The day started quite nicely with a wonderful breakfast at the American Legion before sun up. After breakfast we hit the road knowing the Canadiens were sending down cold weather and wind. Lots of wind! More about wind later. While at the Post Office yesterday their bulletin board informed us about the American Legion breakfast on Saturdays only. We lucked out. For $8.00 you can order from a menu complete with all the fixings: French Toast, pancakes, bacon, eggs, biscuits with gravy, juice, coffee. A great deal for hungry riders. …

Day 36: Marathon to Alpine Sunday March 31, 2019, 30 miles (48 km) – Total so far: 1,786 miles (2,874 km) Yesterday was brutal winds; today cool and beautiful ride. Last night Chef Jim cooked up a batch of spaghetti and meatless meatballs with marinara (out of a can), leftover bagels with peanut butter. The food items came from the French Grocery in town. Very expensive items. The dinner was very delicious and satisfying. This morning Chef Jim made homemade oatmeal with sliced apples. We also had orange juice and coffee.

We knew from the Weather Channel report for Marathon that it was going to be a cold morning. We departed at 9 a.m. with the temperature t 39 degrees. We both were wearing most of our warm clothes. Better yet the wind was from the east and later the …

Síclovía Brings Out Locals in Cooler Temperatures

JACKIE WANG | therivardreport.com

Hundreds of bicycles streamed down St. Mary’s Street early Sunday afternoon. Cyclists and pedestrians stopped at ACE Mart for some Zumba and snacks, while down the road at Roosevelt Park kids ran up to a colorful inflated slide and got free bike helmets from the YMCA of Greater San Antonio

Four-year-old Major Cruz stood still as a YMCA staff member buckled a helmet strap under his chin. His mom, Sandra, said they had just moved to …

Bike Ride Interrupted To Bring Some Light Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on March 30, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 30, 2019

Today’s bike ride is interrupted to bring you some light rain. I planned to ride to Huffman when I started the bike ride at 12:07 PM but around 3 1/2 miles it started to rain lightly but not enough to stop pedaling. Continuing on to Town Center Park, another 3+ miles, the increased to the point that I took shelter at the 7 mile mark at a dentist office. I waited there about 15 minutes until the rain stopped but the streets still wet. As I rode I thought of different routes I could take if the streets to the south were wetter or the rain awaited. But around 10 miles the streets turned dry so I decided to ride the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” route to get more miles. I ended up riding 27.34 miles which pushed this week to 216.96 miles, the second week in a row over 200 miles. March now totals 789.65 miles, 204 miles above my goal.

Weather during the bike ride:start 75 (75% humidity), mostly cloudy, w ind 4 mph, light rain. Finish 72 (86% humidity), overcast, wind NW 7 mph. With the wind much lighter than during Friday’s ride I opted to wear shorts and a long sleeve thermal jersey and was comfortable even when the temperature dropped a few degrees while it rained.

I saw more damp roadway as I crossed Lake Houston on FM 1960 but no rain fell. I trailed the rain far enough for the wet spots to start drying as the traffic stirred the wind up. A cool front should arrive later today and I think the wind had some chill in it as I rode west over the lake.

Back on W. Lake Houston Parkway headed into Kingwood I stayed on it to avoid the activities in Town Center Park. As I rode through the hardware store parking lot Ronnie Clark crossed the parking and recognized me calling my name. Ronnie and I biked together numerous times. We talked for several minutes and he told me about the 1966 VW Bug he is working on. We agreed to bike together again as we parted. I rode home waiting for traffic around HEB and finished the ride at 2:45 PM. Then I washed the Canyon bike to clean off the dirt from riding in the rain and on wet streets.

Sunday does not look hospitable to riding with the high of 59, below my cold threshold. A good day to rest since I biked 13 days in a row.

Day 30: Sanderson-Marathon, TX. Friday March 29, 2019, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,737 miles (2,795 km) We pulled a Patti and Jo stunt, starting to pedal at 4:30 a.m. this morning to beat the 91* temp. of the afternoon. Sunrise isn’t until 7:30 here. Pedaling in the dark of night is a whole new world. It’s quiet, calm, chilly, traffic free, and exhilarating. Two Retired Amigos on Winter Tour

By Douglas Wood | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 34: Rest Day Friday March 29, 2019 Our plan was to ride to Marathon 55 or so miles but the forecast is for 90 degree weather and Marathon is a continued climb. Yesterday I kept calling the motel manager Sandy. His name is Sonny. This morning we informed him we would like to stay another day. Sonny seemed thrilled and a few minutes later stopped by and offered to make an Indian Breakfast for us. Thirty minutes later he delivered Chai and little bowls of goodies that we are not sure but it looks like different types of breakfast cereal. Very good. Thank you Sonny. Sonny is a very nice and generous man.

Sonny received a …
