I wanted to ride outside today enough that I bundled up more than I prefer due to the cool temperature and wind. The sun was out which helped. Bundling up meant leg warmers, long sleeve thermal jersey, and wind jacket. Since it is Wednesday I rode to the north with the wind from the SE. The Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route took about 9 miles to get to the US59 north frontage road after riding through several Kingwood Villages. This was my second ride on this route in February and 2024. I rolled out at 12:08 PM on my Canyon Endurace CF 7 bike. Most of the ride was with the wind until I made the u-turn under US59 at Caney Creek. The climb up from the underpass into the wind took extra effort. My legs might still be recovering from the 2271 feet of climbing I did on Monday in the Tour de Zwift. There were a few places on the ride back to Kingwood when I wasn’t going into the wind and they were appreciated. I finished at 2:37 PM chilled from the wind and 66 degrees.

The audio in the video improved from Sunday but still needs work. I adjusted the gain on my wireless mics. I’ll see the results on the next ride.
Austin City Council approved an update to the city’s bike parking code which will expand the amount of bike parking spaces available to cyclists.
The new code simplifies regulations for developments, making it easier for businesses and residential developers to determine how much bike parking they must provide, said Spencer Schumacher, a commissioner for the Urban Transportation Commission.

Officials with Kingwood Bicycles—a mobile bicycle repair company—recently celebrated the grand opening of their new storefront. While the business will continue offering mobile services, bicycle maintenance and repair services are now also available at the new storefront by appointment from 4-6 p.m. during operating days. A new park opened last month in Cy-Fair, becoming the 70th park in Harris County Precinct 3.
The park, which cost about $3 million, is south of Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve in the northwest Houston area. It includes a pedestrian trail that runs west under the highway to the D Bradley McWilliams YMCA and continues to the precinct’s 100 Acre Wood Preserve.

Training Camp Day 1:
We drove to Fayetsville TX (the middle of no where) at ~ 5:30AM for training camp day 1! The day consisted of stations for different skills like riding in pace lines, emergency braking, etc. There was a lot of alumni members (even members of the 2012/2013 team) there helping us out and external coaches who ran the drills/ biked with us. All of the people helping us were so kind and really made the process enjoyable. Most entertaining part was the station for emergency braking where we biked in a line and then one of the coaches would yell (POTHOLE) and you would have to instantly respond. Almost fell a couple of times but luckily the coaches caught me before doing so.
The 2nd part of the day was a ~25 mile ride through the city. Some of the hills where annoying during this ride but it wasnt anything crazy. I was pretty nervous at first but an alum member was with me and also an external coach and they made the ride pretty enjoyable. One of the …

Today’s ride made me realize how much growth I have made. My first time doing this route I thought it was nearly impossible and I felt so exhausted throughout it. Ofcourse the hills where challenging but I feel like it wasnt nearly as bad as the first time and I found myself a lot less tired. This ride made me realize that I have made progress and I am really proud of myself.
I am still getting used to doing rides and then going to class/ going about my day. After biking I feel exhausted and I have been finding it hard to talk to people and do work. Just feel really spaced out.
Bee Caves: bee caves feb 3, 7, and 10th
Such a hard route. biking through this part of austin is crazy (it is close to where the 360 bridge is). Def very challenging and exauhsting. I feel like I spaced out so much for this ride its hard to remember. When people ask me how bee caves is I just feel like it is not a part of my memory. But during the fed 10th ride I got my first flat, had no idea what to do, but luckily my team helped me out or else I would have been stranded.
Crush the sprints along this flat route through the diverse coasts of Watopia. Lead-in 5.1 miles and 117 feet elevation gain. Total route 26.4 miles and 682 feet elevation gain. I wasn’t sure how my legs would respond for this ride after all of the climbing yesterday. They did well but were tired by the end of the ride. Two Strava top results. Experimented using a wireless mic instead of the webcam mic: failed to pick up my audio. Used an ANT+ dongle in place of Bluetooth to reduce the lost connections: failed, had more lost connections.
This past week, Mayor John Whitmire, after some contentious discussions and even a small protest, gave the go ahead to the Public Works Department to remove recently added street improvements at Washington Avenue and Lubbock on Houston Street.
The upgrades at the crosswalk were designed to improve bike and pedestrian safety in a heavily trafficked area near Trinity Lutheran Church and the city courthouse. Last month I wrote that 2024 would be similar to 2023, just not as miserable, based on PeopleForBikes’ projected retail bicycle sales for the year. This month, I’d like to look a little deeper into the on-the-ground reality behind those numbers and what it means for dealers and suppliers.
The bottom line for the bicycle market is that there is still a huge amount of unsold inventory held by suppliers and that it will take most or all of the coming season to work through it … if not longer. Exactly how long is entirely up to cyclists, their willingness to buy that inventory, and to what effect an ongoing wave of discounts can stimulate their buying behavior.

A vintage bicycle taken from Blue Line Bicycle Laboratory in the Heights more than a year ago has been returned to its rightful owner in a series of chance happenings.
Fred Zapalac, co-owner of Blue Line Bicycle Laboratory at 1504 Yale St., said his brother Dave’s prized possession, a 1950s Columbia, held significant sentimental value for the shop owners. The bicycle’s monetary value is hard to estimate, he said, but he guessed the Columbia’s worth between $1,000 and $1,500.

Day 32:Conroe to Shepherd Sanctuary: Strong winds, too many dogs, and the best place to chill after a ride

Today when we finally left Conroe. The wind was nuts this morning. From the NW, the first half of our ride was either headwinds or crosswinds, 30 mph gusts, and of course most of the climbing for the day.
We rejoined the ACA route in Punkin and rode on 150 for a while past Evergreen and into Coldsprings. Ate fried chicken from the market in the wind on a random curb. Coldsprings doesn’t have much but the little downtown has some charm.
We then deviated from the ACA route to ride to Shepherd, TX on Hwy 150. The traffic was light and the wind was now at our backs. And it was mostly downhill. Total opposite of our morning.
