About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Two New Things and School Zone Left U-turn Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 27, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 27, 2019

Today I rode to the north on the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. Starting at 12:25 PM I added a couple of extra streets and a loop through Tavola I biked 38.44 miles. This added to my March total at 691.73 miles and the week totals 119.04 miles.

The weather was a little cooler than yesterday (Tuesday) causing me to wear a long sleeve thermal jersey and wind breaker jacket over bike shorts. I felt comfortable in the wind but probably overdressed by the 3:24 PM finish as evidenced by the salt stains on the back of the jacket. WEather during the bike ride: start 71 (37% humidity), partly cloudy, wind E 8 mph. Finish 75 (35% humidity), partly cloudy, wind S 13 mph.

Lots of construction along the route. New utilities, new streets, and new houses. This increases the truck traffic and potential for problems. I watch for them.

Two new things on the ride: new sunscreen and new Bellwether Endurance Gel Shorts. The sunscreen uses zinc oxide as the main active ingredient. I made the change because the FDA will release new information about sunscreen products. Some chemicals are not effective or linked to cancer.

I made it pass one school without a problem but at Bear Branch Elementary a car parked at the curb on a corner decided to make a left u-turn in front of me. Fortunately I was watching and stopped quickly.

Thursday’s weather forecast: High 74 F, 10% Precip. / 0.00 in., Mostly Cloudy. High 74F. Winds SE at 10 to 20 mph. Sounds like acceptable riding weather to me.

Major Trail Developments, New Potential Funding Streams in the Lone Star State

by Andrew Dupuy | www.railstotrails.org

Spring in Texas means mild weather and wildflowers blooming.

That means it’s a great time to get out on some Texas trails, and walk or ride among the bluebonnets, as trails are making great strides in the Lone Star State.

Revitalizing Houston Communities

Houston was one of RTC’s invited guests at last year’s inaugural TrailNation Summit, due to the great accomplishments the Houston Parks Board has made building out the 150-mile, $220-million Bayou Greenways 2020 project. This model …

Bruce and Robert’s Southern Tier Adventure

By Bruce Cline and Robert Goss | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 27, 28 and 29 Great Rest Days in Austin: We Made The Most Of It Saturday March 23, 2019 What a great time we had exploring Austin, relaxing and spending quality time with Julie and Claudia. Bruce and Julie loved the city, even more than Nashville and can’t wait to come back. Robert and Claudia also loved the town, the music, the food and exploring. Heck, night one after a power nap, Robert and Claudia listened to music until 1:30 a.m.!!! Bruce and Julie hit Dirty 6th (6th street as the locals call it.) Full blown party scene where the streets are shut down to traffic at 10:00 and music is pumping from every venue. We explored the many districts and sampled plenty of fine beverages in each one. The town is really amazing with its mix of old and new, right next to each other, theoretically coexisting. Bar after bar, music spot after music spot and more food opportunities than you can …

Day 30 Austin to Buescher State Park (past Bastrop): Let’s Get Set Two Rolling Sunday March 24, 2019, 55 miles (89 km) – Total so far: 1,682 miles (2,707 km) Distance 55 miles, Climbing 2200 Sadly we said our good byes, but we’re grateful for the time we had. Bruce and Robert felt the three good days were just about right and were ready for a later start and seeing more of the USA.

Since we were On Willie Nelson Blvd in Austin and close to his home town, and home to Willies Roadhouse on Outlaw Country….Sing it Willie.. …

Day 27: Uvalde-Del Rio, Tex. Tuesday March 26, 2019, 76 miles (122 km) – Total so far: 1,560 miles (2,511 km) I’m quite certain yesterday was not one of Happy’s favorite days of bicycling. She spent most of the night throwing up, certain she had food poisoning. Being weak with only a few crackers and water in her stomach, off she pedaled come daybreak. How she managed is beyond amazing. By lunch and after pedaling 40 miles, she was able to eat and resumed her lightning speed to Del Rio. She’s a warrior extraordinaire. The landscape has changed. We are entering the desert. With that comes the games your mind plays when all you see is nothing. First one cyclist passed us, carrying nothing. Then another who said stop up ahead and get some food. Then we saw cars and all sorts of activity on the other side of the road. We …

Day 31: Avalde to Del Rio Tuesday March 26, 2019, 73 miles (117 km) – Total so far: 1,571 miles (2,528 km) Whoopi! Nice ride today. Cool morning, good roads for the most part, low traffic, and best of all wind at our back. One reason for riding east to west was to have the sun at our back in the morning. In this case the shoulder is wide and traffic was low it just seems safer for riding. By the way the speed limit on this road, US 90, was 75 mph. …

86 Degrees Became 76 Blue Sky Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 26, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 26, 2019

The 86 degree temperatures left town replaced by 76 degrees. The sky is still brilliant blue and clouds are nowhere in sight. I set out on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route at 12:16 PM and rode 32.94 miles, adding to my March total at 653.28 miles.

I changed my attire from yesterday needing to counter the chill in the wind. Today I wore shorts, heavy long sleeve jersey and a wind breaker jacket. I really like this jacket with the three pockets on the back with elastic across the openings. I wish I could find another like this.

Weather during the bike ride: start 72 (49% humidity), a few clouds, wind NE 8 mpg. Finish 76 (40% humidity), fair, wind 6 mph. The wind wasn’t that strong but it seemed that no matter which direction I rode it was into the wind. I think my legs are still recovering from yesterday’s longer ride on the Spring Creek Greenway.

The ride was an ordinary one with nothing catching my attention. I slowly improved my average speed to 14.0 and held it there until the 30 mile point when I was back in Kingwood. I missed the school traffic and finished the ride at 2:43 PM.

Wednesday’s weather will repeat today and I plan on biking.

Monday March 25, 2019, 82 miles (132 km) – Total so far: 1,484 miles (2,388 km) One of Jo’s goals for this trip was to pedal every mile depending upon weather/wind conditions.
