About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Fellow Cyclists and a 3 Leg Dog Chase Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 19, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 21, 2019

Mid-morning the sun broke through the clouds and confirmed my hopes the temperature would get to the 71 degrees in the forecast. When getting dressed to ride I left the leg warmers off, above the shorts I put on a heavy long sleeve jersey (not quite a thermal one) and added the wind proof jacket. Wheels rolled at 11:45 AM and I was concerned that maybe I dressed anticipating warmer weather than what was there. Every time I ducked into the shade the wind chill made it through the jacket and jersey but after 15 minutes or so I warmed up enough to mostly forget about the chill.

Wanting to get an extra mile or two I biked the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route riding 33.89 miles. I now only need 171.1 miles to reach my goal for March with 413.9 miles ridden so far.

I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists but when I stopped for the traffic light at Atascocita Shore Drive at FM 1960 two lady cyclists rode up from the east on FM 1960 and stopped in the left turn lane waiting for the light to change. I waved as I turned right on red onto FM 1960. Sometimes I see a group of women cyclists on Tuesdays and I guess these two were willing to brave the chill. Since they started earlier they were dressed for chilly temperature. Not thinking of seeing another cyclist I noticed a bright flashing white light in the distance as I rode east on Old Atascocita Road and not to far west of FM 2100 he passed me going west. We exchange waves.

Earlier when I rode on Cross Country Drive in Walden a very unusual dog “sprint” took place. To my left I saw a medium size chocolate brown and white dog o running towards me from a driveway on my left. The dog was missing his right rear leg but that didn’t slow him down too much. I dodged to the left as he went to the right side curb pedaling faster. He ran after me with more speed than I expected but after a couple of hundred feet he was no longer in view. Never had a 3 legged dog chase me.

Although the wind wasn’t that strong I guess my legs were not recovered from Monday’s ride. I battled the 10 mph SE wind all the way to FM 2100 where I turned north and the wind was no longer in my face. Weather during the bike ride: start 69 (38% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind E 9 mph. Finish 72 (36% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph.

From that point the tailwind helped me build up my average speed from 13.1 mph to 13.9 mph by the time I got back into Kingwood. It fell back to 13.7 by the time I rode through Kingwood and finished the ride at 2:21 PM.

More of the same weather tomorrow. I plan on biking and may stop by the Dairy Queen at E. Lake Houston Parkway for a free ice cream cone they offer on the first day of spring.

More Like Spring But Smoke to the SE Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 18, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 21, 2019

The American Athletic Conference Basketball tournament overrode my biking plans yesterday (3/17/2019 Sunday) with a little help from cooler weather when I got home from church.

Today was a different story as I set at 12:09 PM to ride the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route biking 37.80 miles. This boosted March to 380.02 miles leaving me 205 miles to reach my goal for March.

Hoping the forecasted 70 degrees would appear before I began I checked the weather as my departure time got near but it fell several degrees short. Weather during the bike ride: start 66 (37% humidity), overcast, wind E 10 mph. Finish 70 (29% humidity), overcast, wind SE 9 mph. So I bundled up some. At first I debated about wearing leg warmers but the temperature refused to go up from 66 so I donned the leg warmers, adding shorts, a long sleeve thermal jersey, wind breaker jacket and regular biking gloves. For 15 minutes into the ride I thought I made a mistake by not adding a short sleeve jersey and full finger gloves but once the body heat kicked in I forgot about chilled fingers and upper body.

With the southeast wind biking to New Caney wasn’t too hard. Making the u-turn under I-69/US59 by Caney Creek I expected the wind to hit me when I got back up to ground level but it wasn’t too hard. Biking west on FM 1485 and Gene Campbell Blvd. the tailwind allowed to keep my speed between 16 and 18 mph. But making the left turn onto FM 1314 heading into the wind the work increased to maintain my 14.2 mph average I had built up to that point.

The official weather says the sky was overcast but to the west and north blue broke through the clouds. With two chemical plants on the southeast side of Houston putting out large volumes of smoke from fires the sky in that direction had a decided gray tint.

Around the 31 mile point the average speed dropped to 14.1 mph because the wind finally took its toll on my legs and the stops slowed me down. By the end of the ride at 2:55 PM the average speed came to 13.9 mph due to the stops and starts in Kingwood.

Data from the ride:

  • average heart rate: 135 (77%)
  • max heart rate: 158 (90%)
  • average power: 133 watts
  • max power: 535 watts

Tuesday weather forecast: High 71 F, 0% Precip. / 0.00 in., Sunny. High 71F. Winds E at 5 to 10 mph. Nice biking weather.

Bruce and Robert’s Southern Tier Adventure

By Bruce Cline and Robert Goss | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 20 Marathon to Sanderson, Texas: Zues Blew On Us Big Time Saturday March 16, 2019, 56 miles (90 km) – Total so far: 1,221 miles (1,965 km) Distance – 56. Climbing Descending. – But we never got to appreciate a descent

Song of the Day – Shout out to Claudia – Nathaniel’s got this right….SOB after this wind day.

The terrain had promise for a great ride, we even started out with no wind…lasted 10 miles, then headwinds, headwinds, headwinds all day. We had to scrape for every inch, all the way into town.

Started the day with a great breakfast at the V6, part of the Gage restaurant. Very good.

Great scenery across the desert and the terrain keeps changing. We wore three layers, face masks, full booties and that north wind was still cutting. All day. Great for duck hunting, not so much for touring with wide panniers. Nonetheless, it was a good ride. The ride had a significant net descent, but we never saw it. We pedaled to get 9 mph downhill all day. Fun stuff. The …

Tim went out yesterday and made some re routes in the camp. I will go open it as soon as I get off at 8. This will only be the camp and it will only be 2-3 miles. Please avoid muddy areas. Under Scott st and behind the hotel is muddy. From RV park to camp may be ok.
