About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclist worried about biking on city streets before deadly collision with HISD bus, father says

By Julian Gill | www.chron.com

David Loya had been an avid cyclist in Houston for about eight months, but he was already keenly aware of the dangers around him on the road.

His stepfather, Felipe Pinales, recalled a conversation with the 23-year-old who frequently rode his bike near his apartment in the Heights area. Loya said he was worried about cars creeping close to him as he pedaled in the bike lane.

"I’ve almost been bumped twice," Pinales recalled Loya saying last Tuesday as they shopped together at the mall. …

Richardson Bike Mart has humble beginning

By Olivia Lueckemeyer | communityimpact.com

Walking into Richardson Bike Mart feels more like stumbling into a cyclist’s fever dream.

Clusters of bicycles line the walls and the floor and even hang from the ceiling.

At any given time, owner and President Woody Smith said 400 bicycles are ready for purchase.

Combine that with the roughly 200-250 warehoused bikes waiting to be assembled and another 1,500 housed at nearby locations, and what results is a companywide inventory that rivals shops nationally and perhaps even globally, Smith said. …

Deal to replace Pelican Island bridge leaves questions about development

Nick Powell | www.strava.com

A revised proposal to replace an aging drawbridge connecting Galveston and Pelican Island is closer than ever to coming to fruition, offering renewed potential for long-sought economic development.

Galveston County and city of Galveston officials have reached a tentative agreement to fund an $89 million version of the long-delayed bridge. It calls for a conventional 75-foot span with four lanes, as well as pedestrian and bicycle crossings.

Efforts to replace the bridge have been hindered by a lack of funds and disagreements over long-term responsibility for maintenance and …

Side Wind to Headwind, Thermal Jersey Rescue Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 11, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2019

Around the 15 mile point in today’s bike ride the wind shifted from my right to a headwind and the temperature felt like it dropped about 10 degrees. I started the ride at 11:58 PM riding the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route to the north. The wind up to that point was from the east and not causing too much of an issue but the headwind slowed me down and made me thankful I chose to wear a long sleeve thermal jersey. After I warmed up I thought maybe the thermal jersey was a mistake but that changed when the wind did. Even with the warmer jersey I still felt the temperature change with the chilly wind hitting me.

At the start my home weather station showed 76 degrees and at the 2:35 PM finish too but out on the road whenever the wind blew it felt cooler. For some reason I chose to wear the thermal jersey rather than a regular long sleeve jersey with a short sleeve one over top; my usual choice for this range of weather.

The headwind to SH 242 where I turned around made pedaling difficult and slowed my speed down to 12 mph or so. Riding to the west over I-69/US59 positioned me where the wind came to my right side and pedaling became easier. I rode west to SpeedSportz Drive and turned left to head back to I-69/US59. Until the wind shifted I expected the ride back south to be hard but thanks to the now tailwind I rode at 18 to 19 mph and boosted my average speed up to 14.7 mph.

With the new rear cassette gearing pedaling and speed seemed to be several mph higher. Maybe my body is more attuned to a 11-28T setup than the 11-32T.

Tuesday weather forecast: High 75 F, 30% Precip. / 0.01 in., AM Showers. High around 75F. Winds SE at 10 to 20 mph. March wind is starting to assert itself. I plan on biking, chasing miles to reach my goal for March.

April 6 & 7 2019 Pace Bend Race

By cxagent | austinmountainbiking.com

Preparations for the Pace Bend Race on April 6 & 7th are well underway. I hope you can participate!

We "rough marked" the course yesterday (3/9). At most major intersections there is now white plastic board with a black arrow pointing the proper direction. We also put up some orange survey tape (flagging) to mark the proper direction. Generally speaking – go between the flagging. We tried to use a color of flagging that nobody else would use. Once we were marking the course we find that someone else had used the same color. Except theirs was faded a bit due to sun exposure. Of course they marked a similar course but not the exact course. It could be confusing if you don’t pay close attention. We did not take down the "other" flagging until we know whose it is and if it still needs to be there. I suspect we will pull it down soon.

We will also be adding more signage and other markings before the race. This "rough marking" is just enough that people can follow it without being obnoxious to other trail users who don’t care about the TMBRA race.

Trail Work Days will be posted soon. These will help everybody get their PayDirt hours. Keep an eye on here and on Meetup.com. Most of the trails is clear and ready to ride. The portion near Chicken Foot needs the most work. Also for the taller riders (like me) we will adding Caution Tape to the low hanging branches we cannot trim. Watch your head because there are several of those. They have been there for years and most tall riders know about them already.

Get your rides in before it starts raining again. …

11-28T Cassette Solves Chain Slip Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 10, 2019 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2019

No grit or grim on today’s bike ride. With a 12:17 PM start time I chose the “Atascocita – Walden” route for shorter miles and rode 25.04 miles.

Weather during the bike ride: start 72 (89% humidity), overcast, wind E 7 mph. Finish 77 (79% humidity), overcast, wind E 9 mph. Clothing choice for today: shorts, long sleeve jersey with a short jersey over top. I felt comfortable except when I rode close to Lake Houston in Walden where the chilled air off the lake hit.

Nothing out of the ordinary along the route.

Finishing at 2:12 PM I sat down in front of the TV to watch my UC Bearcats play the UH Cougars. The Bearcats lost, sadly.

I replaced the rear cassette after yesterday’s ride because the chain slipped when I applied heavy pedal effort. I did not remember that the worn cassette was a Shimano R8000 11-32T while the new one I installed was a Shimano R8000 11-28T. Maybe I knew that when i got the Canyon Endurace CF SLX last year in February but I forgot and ordered the 11-28T. Most of my previous 11 speed bikes used 11-28T and maybe this explains my lower speed from the 11-32T. I could tell the difference during today’s ride. My legs will probably adjust after a few rides. Glad the chain slip is gone.

With today’s ride this week is the most miles for week this year at 138.43 miles, 4 miles higher than the previous high week, February 4th through 10th.

Looks like the weather is settling down next week and I plan on adding more miles biking.
