About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Brutal Route, 16% Gradients: Stage 6 Tour de Zwift Watopia Mountain 8

Texbiker.net Posted on February 12, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 12, 2024

This is a “make up” ride since I missed the original day. There will be a whole lot suffering as I climb 2271 feet over t20.3 miles. Maybe the virtual shifting gears will go low enough that I can “tractor” my Blue Norcross up and over the reverse Epic KOM and the radio tower climb. Group B ride.

A brutal route maybe to offset some of the easier stages. A long slow climb up to the radio tower. Gradients hit 16% but I kept pedaling away. My legs held up as I used the virtual shifting to ease the effort. I was out of the saddle numerous times. Strava shows I’ve done the Radio Tower climb segment 3 times dating back to December 18th, 2019, which was my best time. This was my second ride on the Strava Mountain 8 Forward from Start Pier segment. The first time was also on December 18th, 2019. Strava results from today:

  • 2nd fastest time on Mountain 8 Forward from Start Pier (1:48:55)
  • 3rd fastest time on Radio Tower Climb (14:26)

Topic: Southern Tier – Austin to New Orleans

kenw | forums.adventurecycling.org

Greetings. I biked from San Diego to Austin a few years ago (and it was fantastic) and I may have a week to ten days in March to do Austin to New Orleans. Understood the scenery and hills will be more modest. Any thoughts on what this stretch is like? Thanks. Logged Offline John Nettles

Re: Southern Tier – Austin to New Orleans « Reply #2 on: Today at 07:08:44 pm » About the lower, closer to level hills, it is true once you are out of hill country. Coastal gulf land in NO, LS, Miss and AL is about as hill-less as it gets and stays that way until HWY 90 in north Florida. Inland LA and Miss and AL will have hills, but nothing daunting.

Day 30:Rain keeps us in Conroe, TX ?: Day catching up on work and sleep with a beer thrown in for good measure Saturday February 10, 2024 We are staying in Conroe this weekend, waiting out rain, thunderstorms, and general gloominess. We’ve built in these rest days into our schedule because we don’t need to be in New Orleans until 2/24 to meet our son.

And we have a year on the road, so no crazy hard end dates.

It rained a lot this morning but …

One flat, one bike change, and getting after it to catch the group at mid-point. Then, the rain on the therapy miles with two crazy near-misses due to very slick road paint. Luckily, it was the rear tire that slid out both times, or else i would have been eating pavement. Good times…

Kingwood Streets, Greenbelt Trails, San Jacinto Bayou Greenway

Texbiker.net Posted on February 11, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 11, 2024

Driving home from church the sky looked threatening and a tornado warning was about to expire. That all changed by the time I started today’s bike ride at 2:24 PM. Starting later than planned I rode on Kingwood streets, greenbelts, Forest Cove, and the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway aboard the Lynskey Helix bike. I thought the ride would be 15 to 18 miles but turned out to be 24.29 miles finishing the week with 205.33 miles. I’m making progress on my month goal with 257.1 road miles, the goal is 445 road miles. A strong NE wind (10 mph gusts 21 mph) at the start calmed to 10 mph by the 4:18 PM finish. The wind heralded the coming of a cool front and the temperature dropped 75 to 72 by the end of the ride. I felt the cooling because I wore a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve jersey, no wind jacket. Pedaling into the wind was hard but my legs relished when the road turned with a tailwind.

A bunch of Strava results: 2nd fastest time on North Shore Sunrise (3:37), 2nd fastest time on Uphill to Dagobah (2:32), 3rd fastest time on Lost Cove (12:44), and Local Legend on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:24)

Southern Tier El Paso to New Orleans

By Cortney O. | www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 29: Montgomery to Conroe: Quick day to take care of stuff and avoid the thunderstorms Friday February 9, 2024, 15 miles (24 km) – Total so far: 947 miles (1,524 km) We were feeling this whole being on the road for months thing. We’ve been traveling since mid September 2023. Missing a home base.

So we decided with the weather system coming in and thunderstorms predicted we would stay put a couple days and catch up on sleep, writing, work, and restock our stuff. So Conroe provided cheaper lodging and everything we needed.

We rode out of Montgomery to get breakfast in Conroe. We mostly …

It’s a great improvement, but it is quite difficult to press the button to get the crossing light when approaching the intersection by bike— something that could be solved with a motion detected signal (like at spring st/MKT and sawyer). pic.twitter.com/6Gz4PdKbcI
