About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No Bike Glitches. Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive

Texbiker.net Posted on February 8, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 8, 2024

No Cervelo Caledonia equipment glitches on today’s ride. The AXS gears shift when they were supposed to, the rear tire kept it’s pressure, and the powermeter talked to the Bolt computer. Yay!! The strong south wind made me work biking the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route. I wanted the return to Kingwood to be a tailwind all the way but it wasn’t quite. The mid 70’s temperature was appreciated but a few chilly places reminded me that winter isn’t done yet. The strong wind blowing across Lake Houston had chill in it. I rolled out earlier than yesterday (11:43 AM), rode farther (36.21 miles), and finished earlier (2:30 PM). I’m 44% of the way to my 445 mile goal for February.

Weather: Start 74 degrees, humidity 66%, dew point 62.0, overcast, wind S 10 mph gusts 21 mph; Finish 75 degrees, humidity 67%, dew point 62.9, overcast, wind S 15 mph gusts 20 mph.

Steiner Ranch Mountain Biking students race in NICA competition

Katherine Dale | www.vandegriftvoice.com

From Feb. 3-4, select students from the Steiner Ranch Mountain Biking (SRMTB) competition team raced in Warda, TX at the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) competition. NICA is a non-profit organization that promotes the growth of mountain biking nationally and encourages youth biking competitions.

“My races went pretty well,” Abby Mack, junior competitive team member, said. “I do two laps, which is five miles, and it had rained a lot the past week so it was super muddy. It was fun, but also painful because the mud made it difficult.”

Mack placed fifth out of 13 competitors in her category. Students have the opportunity to …

Cycling the Route To Emancipation

Ariel Marlowe | www.adventurecycling.org

When I met Talib in February of 2021, we were in the front parking lot of Cycleast. I’d spent the previous day on a date, doing the original Black History Bike Ride (BHBR) route, quietly struggling to complete the 8.46 miles on my single-speed bike. So when I spotted him, I had some questions… Was he the guy who hosted the initial Black History Bike Ride in June? And if so, why didn’t he put a warning on his online route about it being so hilly? We laughed and soon became friends.

Our friendship evolved when I began to help organize and lead BHBR events around the city, and when Talib suggested we film a documentary of our 350-mile ride from Austin to Galveston for Black History, I had …

Day 25:Bastrop to Buescher State Park: Taking the slow tour

Monday February 5, 2024, 17 miles (27 km) – Total so far: 796 miles (1,281 km) So if you’ve been reading along, you know we are doing this bike touring thing on our own terms. Sometimes we ride 60 miles and today we did 17.

We’ve also been through 6 states since mid September and won’t be done exploring until August of this year.

So today, 17 miles. We took our time breaking camp, went to breakfast at Maxine’s on Main Street in Bastrop. Got some groceries at the Drive In Market and spent some time exploring charming Bastrop.

Then we rode to Bastrop State Park and …

Day 26: Buescher State Park to Round Top: We detoured and made our own route and it was perfect

Tuesday February 6, 2024, 48 miles (77 km) – Total so far: 844 miles (1,358 km) Today we were heading to Round Top. We were going to camp on someone’s property through Hipcamp because Round Top is expensive and the RV Park that adventure cycling has listed is only available during the weeks Round Top has special events.

We looked at the route holistically and saw it included an unnecessary trip to La Grange so we followed a Google route instead.

Here it is: Shared route …

Day 27:Round Top to Navasota: We have a hard time sticking to these ACA maps ? Done with Section 4 of the Southern Tier!

Wednesday February 7, 2024, 49 miles (79 km) – Total so far: 893 miles (1,437 km) So we detoured again. Really out of necessity because of where our Hipcamp was.

Today we went through Brenham. Not on the …

Finding Flat Tire Cause; No Powermeter Watts. Who Said Bikes Are Boring?

Texbiker.net Posted on February 7, 2024 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 7, 2024

My saga with the Cervelo Caledonia’s rear tire continued this morning. The flat returned resulting in taking the tube out of the tire, submerging it in water to find the leak. The last patch I applied spewed bubbles from the edge meaning the removable Presta valve core wasn’t the problem, my patching skill was. Not wanting to put a third patch over the hole I threw that tube away and installed a new one. Back in the tire, aired up, it held air when I got back from today’s bike ride.

That wasn’t the only problem. I rode my Canyon Endurace bike north on the Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route today. I didn’t notice that the watts showed “0” until around 20 miles into the ride. I stopped at the store on Valley Ranch Parkway and Azalea Blvd attempting to fix it but did not. I continued onto the 7 Eleven store at FM1314 and turned the Bolt computer off thinking that might be the issue but it wasn’t. Not knowing what else to try I rode on. Just before leaving Briar Berry Lane I came up with the idea to reset the power meter and pulled over. I turned the power meter cartridge pulling it out, pressed the reset button and watts starting showing on the Bolt computer. I think I caused the issue while working on the Cervelo Caledonia’s front derailleur not shifting. Too many bikes with the same electronic shifting components can lead to trying to connect a component to the wrong bike.

Riding north to Caney Creek the strong south wind made it easy on my legs. I figured the return to Kingwood would be into that strong wind and it was. Sometime during the ride the wind increased from 14 mph to 21 mph with 28 mph gusts. To add some chill the temperature hung around 68 degrees and in the shade it felt even chillier. I wore a long sleeve jersey under a wind jacket but I could’ve used a little heavier jersey with the strong wind. Finishing at 3:12 PM was later than I wanted but I started late at 12:28 PM. I waited for the temperature to go up a few more degrees but settled for 66 at the start and 69 at the end.

Kyle Cyclery relocates under new ownership

By Sarah Hernandez | communityimpact.com

The Kyle Cyclery changed ownership and relocated in early November.

Brother and sister Marc and Rachael Adams purchased the bicycle shop from the previous owner, James Stanfill, in late October when the shop was located at 3080 Kyle Crossing, Kyle. The two had been employees at the shop for over a year.

They reopened the shop with the same retail and repair services at 5500 FM 2770 Ste. 104, Kyle.

“It’s just kind of always a work in progress, but we’re fully functioning,” Rachael Adams said. “Every time you come in, something will be a little bit better.”

The Kyle Cyclery is a full-service bicycle shop that offers an array of bicycle repair services and sells bikes and accessories.
