About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cracked Hanger and Cracked Pickup Driver Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on November 16, 2018 by Rick AnkrumNovember 16, 2018

First bike ride since my November 7th crash. The Canyon Endurace CF SLX rear derailleur hanger has been replaced. It suffered a crack in the crash and thanks to Canyon a new arrived to fix it. I still need to replace the handlebar tape. I am waiting for a time when the weather keeps me indoors. Today’s ride followed the “Kingwood-Community Drive-Valley Ranch” route for a total of 27.17 miles. During the time I didn’t ride I fell behind on my goal for November but with this ride I am back on track with 188.1 miles so far this month leaving 171.9 miles to ride.

Cracked hanger photos. Attaching the hanger went quick, getting the chain on the smallest rear cog and the wheel into the frame was hard. For some reason I didn’t notice the chain wasn’t on the jocky pulley causing the chain to not turn and mount on the cog. Once I realized that the chain went into place and the gear shifting was back to normal.

Part of the days off was for recovery but most were due to the unusual cold weather roaring through the Houston area. On the November 7th it was 84 degrees and today it only reached 68 degrees. I bundled up for the coolness with shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey, windbreaker jacket, regular half finger gloves. This kept me comfortable during the ride and with light sweat. Over dressing is a problem when the ride starts cool and then I warm up sweating too much. Weather during the ride: start 67 (41% humidity), fair, wind SW 8 mph. Finish 68 (38% humidity), fair, wind 4 mph.

Most of the ride went smoothly until a man in a pickup truck drove by on my right as I approached FM 1314 riding south shouting obscenities at me. He pulled into the Circle K and then to FM 1314. Not sure what I did to upset him. After that the ride returned to calm steady pedaling.

I started the ride at 12:21 pm waiting for the temperature to go up some and I finished at 2:22 pm. The late start played a part in the shorter route.

Saturday forecast: Sat 11/17 High 71 F, 10% Precip. / 0.00 in, Partly Cloudy. High 71F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. A few degrees warmer. I plan on biking but not sure how early.

And now, an official with that Tarrant County non-profit organization says he wants to find a …

Long Rides Finally Calmed This Man’s Severe Anxiety—and Helped Him Drop 110 Pounds

BY JOSH LANGSTON | www.bicycling.com

Name: Josh Langston
Age: 32
Occupation: Accountant
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Start Weight: 340 pounds
End Weight: 230 pounds
Time Cycling: 2 years

I’ve been heavy or chubby most of my life, but I would have to say the main culprits that pushed my weight to 340 pounds were working a desk job 50 hours a week, ignoring my diet, and drinking lots of alcohol. Typically in social settings, alcohol and food go hand in hand, so the more I drank, the more I ate, and that was pretty much how I lived my life. …

Joe Center | www.houstonchronicle.com

When the Chronicle ran the fourth installment of its series “Out of Control,” examining the risks to pedestrians and bicyclists in our region, it prompted a spirited conversation on the Facebook page of Critical Mass Houston, a group that organizes a monthly bike ride for cyclists of all skill levels.
