The sun was out and so was the wind when I started today’s bike ride at 2:00 PM; NW 15 mph gusts 27 mph. The temperature was 68 but the strong wind put a chill in it. I almost wore the wrong long sleeve jersey but just before starting I changed to a medium weight long sleeve jersey under a wind jacket. Usually when it is below 67 degrees I’ll wear leg warmers but above that my legs warm up enough that I don’t notice the coolness. Today was different but I didn’t wear the leg warmers. As the ride progressed the wind seemed to be stronger and the temperature a little cooler. When I got home at 3:38 PM the temperature dropped to 66 and the wind went up to 23 mph and 31 mph gusts. Today I rode my Lynskey Helix bike.
For the first 7 miles I rode mostly with the wind but when I turned back north at Kings Harbor the wind wanted to slow me down and make pedaling harder. After yesterday’s Zwift ride and 1198 feet of climbing I powered into the wind but it wasn’t easy when a gust caught me. When I made it back to Kingwood Drive I headed east with the wind. Winding through the side streets in Fosters Mill I was in and out of the headwind. Riding NW on Mills Branch was a headwind. Woodspring Forest and Woodstream were windy. By the time I rode into Royal Brook the temperature felt cooler and the wind stronger. I decided to settle for less than 20 miles and rode towards home rather than go to Woodridge Forest. I call this route Kingwood Streets.
This week’s bike activities totaled 216 miles. Five days on the road and two days on Zwift. The last week with more miles was October 23 – 29 last year. The maintenance jobs updated the SRAM AXS eTap firmware on each bike and replacing the CR2032 batteries on the Cervelo Caledonia. I had never done that before but it was easy once I found the battery cover. Earlier in the week I fixed a rear tire flat on the Cervelo. I’m ahead of the miles needed to reach February’s 445 goal; 92.8 miles, 21% of the goal.
James Franklin Glover was born into this world on January 25th, 1941, in Ashland, Oklahoma. He left this world on Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the age of 83.
Frank (as his family and friends called him) was born at home to his loving parents, Nina and James Glover. Soon enough, he was gifted with two wonderful younger sisters, Donna and Sherry.
Especially in his later years, Frank enjoyed telling the story about the time he and his family moved from McAllister, Oklahoma, to Greenville, Texas. They came by train when he was about 5 years old. He said he was more than disappointed as they crossed the Red River when he did not see cowboys riding horses everywhere. He was very upset that Texas did not live up to his wild west expectations. …
… Frank could never sit still. Ever. Over the years, he enjoyed playing golf and running. He then took up arrowhead and fossil hunting all around Texas. This eventually phased into his love of hiking mountains at Big Bend National and State Parks, the Guadalupe Mountains, crossing the Grand Canyon multiple times, and hiking several 14’ers in Colorado. Once his knees began to give out, Frank purchased his first road bicycle and discovered his love of riding. He participated in three RAGBRAI rides across the state of Iowa, several annual Bike Tour of Colorado rides, and more rides than we could ever count with his friends around the state of Texas. We hope his friends Mohammad, Steve, Russ, Allan, and so many others know how much he enjoyed his times with them. …

Last year on this date I rode stage 8 of the Tour de Zwift. This year I rode stage 7. It was a brute with 17% climbing. I missed stage 6. Stage 7 Group B rides 1 lap at 14.1 miles and 1198 feet of climbing. Lumpy ride with a Cat. 4 climb in the middle. My legs will be yelling at me. It averages 6.1% but hit 17%. Hopefully my legs will talk to me again after they quit complaining. I was out of the saddle on several climbs for extended portions. For all of that effort I got these Strava results: PR on Harlem Hill Climb (3:05), 2nd fastest time on NYC KOM (9:18), 2nd fastest time on East Side Drive Climb (2:09), and 2nd fastest time on Three Sisters – Fulgaz (6:02). I’ve biked around Central Park and there are no climbs like these.

Wichita Falls has again been recognized as a Bronze Medal Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.
The city is one of 480 communities across the nation to be ranked, according to a press release.

“The Bicycle Friendly Community designation is a reflection of local leaders’ ongoing work to build better places to bike,” according to the release.
Wichita Falls was first awarded the Bronze Medal status in 2019.

A regional planning agency has awarded $34.5 million in funding for transportation-related projects in fast-growing New Braunfels
The money is coming from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the agency responsible for transportation planning for the entire region.
The agency, which is commonly known as AAMPO, awarded $12.3 million to the city of New Braunfels for four projects proposed by city leaders. It also awarded $22.2 million to the Texas Department of Transportation for two New Braunfels-area projects planned by the state agency.
The city of New Braunfels’ projects include $6.8 million for pedestrian and bicycle improvements to Gruene, a national historic district in north New Braunfels. …
