About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Unexpected Weather Opening Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 24, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 24, 2018

Waking up this morning the weather forecast changed slightly from yesterday. Now the rain arrival time bumped from the morning to afternoon. As I ate breakfast i checked the weather radar periodically and saw the rain was distant. From not expecting to ride I changed to thinking a ride was possible and at 11:11 am I rolled at the driveway on the ” Atascocita – Walden” route. I chose this route because of the shorter distance and rode 22.9 miles. This increase October biking to 589.18 miles, leaving 111 miles to reach my goal.

Just because the rain held off the weather still felt chilly and I dressed accordingly: shorts, leg warmers, long sleeve jersey short sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket and regular bike gloves. I thought I might have overdressed but I felt comfortable after riding 15 minutes or so. Weather during the bike ride: Weather: start 68 (86% humidity), overcast, wind E 10 mph. Finish 69.3 (85% humidity), light rain, wind E 13 mph.

With the overcast sky it was not easy spotting the rain clouds. The ride was dry until about 14.2 miles when a light rain started falling. Earlier I felt a few sprinkles but they went away. I had a similar optimism about the light rain and at FM 1960 crossing on Atascocita Shores Drive it let up some and after crossing FM 1960 it stopped. This held all the way back to Kingwood until I was about a mile from home when it started sprinkling. Finishing the ride at 12:59 pm I put the Canyon bike away and within a few minutes the rain came, not heavy but enough to soak me if I still was on the road. Good thing I chose the short route.

Thursday’s weather looks more bike ride friendly and I will have another opportunity to get closer to my October goal.

Woodlands board keeps busy during nearly 6 hours of meetings on Oct. 18

By Jeff Forward | www.yourconroenews.com

The Woodlands Township Board of Directors didn’t necessarily burn the proverbial “midnight oil” during an Oct. 18 meeting, but the board and dozens of attendees and township staff did log nearly six hours of meetings covering a wide range of topics that did not conclude until almost 10 p.m. …

… Other speakers during the public comment period of the meeting included several bicycling advocates from the Bike The Woodlands Coalition, who expressed their support for a grant request by the township to H-GAC seeking funding for several bike and pedestrian path improvements around the township.

Randall Cade, one of the leaders of the coalition, told the board the current projects being proposed would help improve bicycling safety as well as lessen traffic because more people my opt to bike to work; he also said he would help coordinate ideas and sponsors for additional funding for other projects in the future. …

Houston Honor Ride (AKA Independence Ride)

Tanstaafl | www.bikeforums.net

For several years now, I have volunteered at the Independence Ride in Wallis, TX. It benefitted wounded vets, especially those with amputations. The Independence Fund, the national organization for the ride would bring out bikes adapted for vets with missing or paralyzed limbs. There would be hundreds of registered riders and up to 150 vets with various disabilities at the ride.

Last year the ride moved to Project Hero, and became The Honor Ride. It’s the same ride, put on by the same local people, from the same start line it has always had. But everyone in the area seems to have forgotten about the ride. Three weeks out from the ride they are at 2% of their fundraising goal (about $2400).

If you are looking for a ride on Nov 10, please think about heading for Wallis, TX (East of Houston near I-10) and …

Rule Abiding Bicyclist Today

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 23, 2018

Decided to not break any rules today so I stayed inside because the temperature was below 60 and the streets were wet. More rain on Wednesday as remnants of Hurricane Willa tries to move through Texas. Thursday looks like a bike ride kind of a day.
