About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Broke A Rule For This Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 22, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 22, 2018

Determined to go biking today I broke one of my rules: do not ride if the temperature is below 60 degrees. My home weather station reported 59.5 degrees. I figured rounding up and the rule was satisfied. To counter the chilly temperature I assembled a heavy duty wardrobe: shorts, leg warmers, thermal long sleeve jersey regular long sleeve jersey, wind breaker jacket and full finger gloves. I needed all of it.

I chose the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route heading north into the light 4 mph breeze. The wind had a bite to it and I felt the chill even with my layered outfit. By around 5 miles into the ride my body heat got to a point where I didn’t notice the chill quite as much. I started the ride at 12:09 pm hoping by then the forecasted 70 degrees would arrive during the ride. It didn’t!!!

Weather during the bike ride.

For some reason when I filled my water bottle before the ride I added ice cubes, probably more out of habit than logic.

The main reason I rode was to record miles towards my monthly goal. I did that biking 33.39 miles and increasing October to 566.28 miles, only 134 miles short of the goal.

No rest stops today. Movement and keeping warm was more important.

Biking south from Tavola back to Kingwood changed the headwind to a tailwind and helped me set a pace fast enough to improve my overall average speed to 14.1 mph. I held that until mile 30 when I got back into Kingwood and the streets slowed me down. I finished the bike ride at 2:36 pm, avoiding school traffic by a few minutes.

Tuesday weather forecast: 80% Precip. / 0.46 in., AM Rain. High 62F. Winds NE at 5 to 10 mph. Biking looks difficult but maybe it clear out some.

No Rider Left Behind: students launch first cycling club

BY SAMANTHA ESPARZA | www.mesquite-news.com

On a cloudy and mild Sunday morning Marisol Rios and her father, Micheal G. Rios, prepare for a 14-mile bike ride on the southside of San Antonio. Marisol cautions riders to fill up their water bottles because it will be a few miles before a water break.

Other riders begin to show up to the Bike World starting point. Coach Rios fits the riders for the appropriately sized bikes and they strap on their helmets. The leader gives a quick overview of …

Shelby Cobra In The Park Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 21, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 21, 2018

This week the weather has not been kind to my bicycling. Today the clouds mostly went away but a stiff NE wind awaited as I started the bike ride at 12:17 pm. With the somewhat late start I decided to ride the “Atascocita – Walden – E. Lake Houston Parkway” going 29.5 miles. This increased October cycling to 532.9 miles, 76% of my 700 mile goal. This I rode 88.92 miles, way below my usual. amount.

Weather during the bike ride: start 70 (45% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind NE 14 mph, gusts 23 mph. Finish 70 (48% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind NE 8 mph. I dressed for the chill with shorts, long sleeve thermal jersey and a windbreaker jacket. I felt comfortable and at the end of the ride the jersey and jacket were damp from perspiration. When I rode in the shade the extra clothing was good. At first the sun was more visible but as the ride progressed clouds moved in from the south.

When I came to Town Center Park there was a 1965 Shelby Cobra parked across from a restaurant and I took these photos.

Bike Ride Town Center Cobra
Bike Ride Town Center Cobra-2

Twice a year there is a car show at this place and a number of Shelby Cobras are on display. I think there is a club.

No rest stops on today’s bike ride. I hurried to get back home to watch the Houston Texans on the DVR.

Monday’s weather forecast: Mostly Cloudy. High near 70F. Winds light and variable. I plan on biking to get closer to my goal.
