About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

LAZER HELMET RECALL

Carolyne Whelan | dirtragmag.com

Do you wear a Lazer helmet? Check your head.

Lazer, a Belgian helmet company owned by Shimano, has issued a recall for its Blade, Magma, Elle and Jade bicycle helmets sold since January 2015. Helmets typically have a wear-life of 4-5 years, not including the one-crash rule, so if you bought your helmet during the earlier part of this recall window, you are likely due for a new one anyway. …

Last Ride of Summer

Mick McCrary | www.strava.com

Zone 1, mostly easy, conversational pace, on a very warm day. High was 91 and tomorrow, Houston is supposed to be getting its first cold front. This was the third and longest ride yet on the Speedvagen. After 2 rides last week, I wasn’t sure what to think. Yesterday, I got the fit dialed in and today, the bike felt fantastic. Surprisingly, I ran higher tire pressure (120 versus 90) today compared to last week.

Headwind On The Way to Huffman Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 9, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 9, 2018

Today’s bike ride followed the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route cycling south and to the east. It started at 11:05 am as I got a little later start than I wanted. Earlier there were some rain clouds in the area. Weather during the bike ride: start 84 (81% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind E 12 mph. Finish 88 (62% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 13 mph. I biked 33.72 miles boosting October to 291.11 miles, 42% of the 700 miles goal for October.

Nothing out of the ordinary during the bike ride except when I stopped at the Huffman Chevron to refill my water bottle the fountain dispenser and other fixtures were disconnected from what looked like cleaning and repositioning in the store layout. So I rode west to the Shell station on FM 1960 and refilled there.

Wind presented a challenge as I biked to the east but after turning north on FM 2100 and then west on FM 1960 it became my friend. I finished the bike ride at 1:45 pm.

Looking at the forecast for next week fall weather arrives with temperatures dropping and highs only in the 70’s and night time into the 60’s or 50’s. Hopefully this doesn’t curtail biking.

This Saturday I plan on riding the Hero’s Ride in Conroe and the weather should be great for that.

New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 8, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 8, 2018

Another October week begins with warm weather fitting for a great bike ride. I selected the “New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch” route and rode 33.34 miles. Weather during the bike ride: start 86 (75% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind ?. Finish 89 (64% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind SE 16 mph. The wind at the start of the ride wasn’t available due to the NOAA website being down but my home weather station showed 2.5 mph.

The ride began at 10:36 am as I rolled out the driveway. Today traffic was light probably because schools and most government offices closed for Columbus Day. No other cyclists out along the route either.

Getting to Tavola wasn’t too hard with the wind helping from the back. Expecting that to change on the way back I was surprised to find the wind not holding me back so much. I built up my overall average speed to 14.1 mph and held it there until I got back to Kingwood. I finished the ride at 1:05 pm and now need to catch up on the Astros vs. Indians baseball game.

After finishing the bike ride I looked at the weather radar and it looks like I missed some rain back towards Roman Forest and Tavola. Good timing for a change.
