About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Oil Spill With Peppers But Not Stopping This Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 5, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 5, 2018

The morning didn’t go very well before I left on today’s bike ride. At the breakfast table I turned around to get a cereal box and knocked off a decorative glass bottle filled with oil and peppers. It hit the floor spilling broken glass and oil all over the floor. So much for starting today’s bike ride before 10am, I wanted to get biking early so I could get back to watch the Astros and Indians game.

After cleaning up the mess and slipping across the title floor I finished breakfast and got ready to leave. Punching the start button on the Elemnt computer at 10:28 am I began on the “Atascocita – Huffman” route. I don’t ride this short route much but before I retired it was a regular. Because of the time limit I biked 28.52 miles and boosted October to 179.29 miles.

I didn’t expect to see any other cyclists but four of them crossed my path. 3 of them were after 11 miles into the ride over Lake Houston and Old Atascocita Road.

Only a brief stop at the Huffman Chevron for water and ice interrupted the ride back to Kingwood and finished the bike ride at 12:37 pm in time to watch the baseball game.

Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (75% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 10 mph. Finish 89 (66% humidity), mostly cloudy, wind S 7 mph. The wind was tough getting to FM 2100 but after making the turn to the north on FM 2100 it became a tailwind helping ride faster with less energy.

Saturday I plan on biking the Spirit Ride in Livingston, TX. The weather looks great with a low chance of rain and temperatures in the 80’s.

David Ward, from the Bike The Woodlands Coalition, said he and other biking enthusiasts believe the trees and curves on curren bike and walking paths in the township limit sight lines and create dangerous situations. Ward called on the township …

Tiny Black Bugs, Bright Yellow Flowers Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on October 4, 2018 by Rick AnkrumOctober 4, 2018

The week or two while out biking I run into these small clouds of tiny black bugs, smaller than gnats. After today’s ride my wife told me I looked dirty but in fact my arms were covered the tiny black bugs probably held there by sunscreen and sweat. Trying not to breathe while riding through the cloud is my first reaction and thankfully the cloud is not large, about the size of a basketball. I rode through several such clouds on today’s bike ride on the “Kingwood – SH 242 – Kingwood” route. The ride was 36.62 miles improving October to 150.77 miles, 22% of the way to my 700 mile goal.

Weather conditions improved over yesterday with plenty of sunshine and only some clouds. Weather during the bike ride: start 87 (69% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 5 mph. Finish 90 (61% humidity), partly cloudy, wind SE 5 mph.

Start time today was 10:41 am positioning my time through school zones when traffic was light. I finished at 1:30 pm.

To add some distance I biked through Tavola and then stayed on the road that parallels the railroad tracks on the east side. There several patches of bright yellow flowers so I took this photo.

Bike Ride Woodbranch Village

The location was south of the Woodbranch Village city hall and police station on the east side of the road. I am not sure what flower they are but they look like small sunflowers.

Biking north the wind assist helped me pedal along. At the SH 242 turn around I expected the wind to become a problem but instead I still maintained my 16 to 18 mph speed with some help from the occasional passing cars and trucks. Riding on Valley Ranch Parkway the wind still didn’t pose much resistance and at the Stripes station on FM 1314 I made a quick stop to refill my water bottle for the remaining 11+ miles to the finish.

While I biked I thought about the upcoming bike ride in Livingston on Saturday. The last time rode there was November 16, 2013. Since then the ride moved up a month with the chance of better weather. As of today the weather forecast looks great for bicycling so I am planning on being there. In 2013 I rode 42.1 miles and I think i will try that route again. The 2013 ride at RideWithGPS.com. Check the Texbiker.net Event calendar for ride information.

With Saturday’s bike ride in mind and the Astros playing the Indians at 1:05 pm on Friday I need to start early and not ride too far tomorrow. The weather looks good for biking.
